** Howie's Quick Hits - Monday night edition **

- Negotiations continue between Louisville and Brohm, I hear. While I still think there is going to be a deal, I certainly understand why it isn't already done. (hint: details)

- Jeff has leverage. He has a good job, he's happy and he knows that Louisville fans believe he is the only candidate. Vince Tyra is not really negotiating from a position of strength and I'm not sure Vince likes that. I certainly wouldn't. I'd rather be coming to the table with other options.

- What does that mean? Louisville is going to have to pony up cash and considerations (term of contract, assistant salaries, etc...) to make the deal work.

- And to be clear, Vince HAS other options - there are some very good football coaches who want to come to Louisville - but Vince also understands the fan base well enough (and he hears all the chatter) to understand that Jeff is THE candidate.

- What do I mean? Well, Luke Fickell would be very good here. He's a very good coach, he can win a lot of games, he would recruit very good players and Louisville would be a fringe Top 25 team in two years (in my opinion). But is Fickell sell-able to a Louisville fanbase over Brohm?

- I forgot to post earlier but I included Odom and Venables on the Hot Boards out of a sense of obligation. They'll be removed in the update tomorrow morning.

- Let's talk dates...
Dec. 1 - That's Vince's birthday, and he told Kent Spencer he'd like to have Louisville's new coach by then.
Dec. 5 - That's the day Brohm's buyout drops by $1.1 million.
Dec. 19 - That's the early Signing Period for football prospects, the date that Vince told me a full staff needs to be in place (this was back before he even fired Petrino).

I am available to answer questions on this thread tonight and tomorrow morning... fire away.

How much is too much . . . .

Just attempting to get a feel for how much some of you would pay for Jeff Brohm to come home. I’d really like to hear from those original “bring Jeff home” folks that have been increasingly supportive of having Jeff as our next head football coach. I’m in favor of bringing Jeff home but I don’t want to break the bank to do that. Plus I don’t feel that his record indicates that he deserves $6 mil per year for a 5 or 6 year period. But that’s just me. How about it “Trinity mafia” folks? How much are you willing to have UofL pay for his services. And if he does come home are you willing to give close to a cool million for Holt to be the DC?

UNC, WKU, Texas Tech all ready to name new coaches...

...After firing their HC over the weekend. How long do we do the dance with Brohm? Is it good or bad that we aren't hearing much but idle speculation? We got 9 (NINE) recruits right now. Just my opinion but we drag this out for a week or more and don't get Brohm, Tyra isn't going to end up looking good. People will say we should have hired an experience AD. JB either wants to be here or he doesn't so let's move on to someone who does.

- I didn't include Matt Campbell from ISU because his buyout is $7 million.

*I fully expect Jeff Brohm to be the next coach of Louisville.

How much . . . .

is too much for Jeff Brohm? I say $5.5 mil for 5 years (a total of $27.5 mil) is absolute top dollar. Anything over that is too much. I’d love to hear from those that were “early” supporters of Jeff
Brohm. Especially those that were called the “Trinity mafia”. My figure of $5.5 million is admittedly a contrived figure. But just thinking about the UofL job and the record that Jeff has complied to this point . . . . . Well you get my drift. I’m thinking about the adidas money and the additional ACC/ESPN financial boon to UofL with all of this. What I did not “add in” was increased season ticket sales, including suite sales.

What the hell?

Sorry guys, I'm referring to the Cardinals game tonight against Miami of Ohio.

The girls finally get to play a home game and the ESPN watch app said the game will stream live. So I'm there to watch it and there's nothing. Just a graphic saying your ACC event will begin shortly.

It was in the ESPN schedule for 7pm. Thinking maybe my Concast or tablet was acting up I rebooted and now the game is not on the ESPN watch schedule. It just disappeared.

What the hell? Nothing UofL is running smoothly. Cant even watch the 5th ranked team on the biggest network in sports.

URGH!!!

**Louisville football news and notes (11/26)**

Good Monday morning everyone. I had some items of note to go over as we start this presumably very busy week and get you up to speed on what is happening in the Louisville football program so let's begin.

- I have noticed reports of names being put out there as legitimate options in the Louisville head coaching search so I wanted to set the record straight. Jeff Brohm is Louisville's #1 target and at this point talking about other names is just a lot of, in Charlie Strong's term, fake juice. I'm not saying Brohm couldn't turn the job down and one of those names become a legitimate option, but at this point, Brohm is the focus. Basically every name being thrown around as having mutual interest should just have an asterisk stating if Brohm remains at Purdue.

- Now that we have cleared that up let me just state a reminder that if/when you hear something a little concerning about the negotiations with Brohm, just keep in mind the negotiation process doesn't involve one offer and and an immediate acceptance. There WILL be ups and downs in any negotiation process so don't get discouraged if we hear rumblings of the two sides not being on the same page etc.

- I wanted to post this here for those that may have missed it on Saturday. I know most people didn't really want to read/hear/see anything more on the Louisville/Kentucky game but I did a post game article 100% focused on some areas Louisville needs to improve going forward. You can check that out here: https://louisville.rivals.com/news/louisville-vs-kentucky-quick-postgame-thoughts-1.

- An important Louisville recruit has been on campus this weekend in 4-star offensive tackle Marcus Dumervil. On Saturday I saw Pete Nochta being Dumervil's personal chauffeur before the Governor's Cup game. For those who may not be aware, Marcus Dumervil is the cousin of Dejmi Dumervil-Jean and the nephew of Elvis Dumervil. I spoke with a source close to Marcus' recruitment who stated that the Dumervil family still considers Louisville home despite Bobby Petrino not being here. The source went on to say that while they didn't really know a timeline on the matter, they felt certain that Marcus Dumervil will end up at Louisville before it's all said and done.

- At one point Louisville had 3 tight ends committed in the class of 2019 in Sam Snyder, Austin Griffin, and Jeremiah Pruitte. Now, Louisville only has one in Sam Snyder, and that commitment is on shaky ground with Missouri looking to get involved in his recruitment. This is a position of desperate need for when Louisville's next coach is officially announced as Jordan Davis is the only returning scholarship tight end for 2019. Priority #1 of the new coaching staff will be working to hold on to Sam Snyder but they will also have to go out and find a couple more prospects who will need to be able to play immediately.

- As soon as news breaks of Louisville's new coach @Dave Lackford and I will be keeping you all up to date on all the recruiting news and information you could ask for so make sure to stay tuned in for that.

FB RECRUITING: Louisville coaches on the road recruiting

Louisville's coaches don't know who the next coach will be, when it will be announced, or even if they will be retained or not but regardless Louisville's coaches are out on the recruiting trail.

Kolby Smith (and possibly Richard Owens) are headed to visit TE commit Sam Snyder tomorrow.

Also Kolby Smith is schedule to visit Jaden Johnson.

I'll update this as the in-home visits are scheduled.

Please say it ain't so

I don't have sources or this or that. I spoke to someone in my family with some info. I can't say exactly who or what because I'm sure she reads these boards. I'll just say she works for the University in some capacity.

I was told Dino Babers will be the next coach at UofL by her.

If so, what a terrible F ing hire for UofL. If Dino Babers is the next coach then Vince Tyra has lost all credibility with me.

I hope to God she is wrong on this. Dino Babers does not deserve to come here. I'd rather have 10 other coaches before him

JEFF BROHM - Purdue HC
Current Spot: 13-12
overall at Purdue, now in his second season
Why He's Hot? Brohm has been the No. 1 candidate since Day 1 of this coaching search. In fact, he was the No. 1 candidate on Day -21 of this search because we believe he has been the target all along. A Louisville native, a Louisville alum, a Louisville legend, Brohm led Louisville as starting quarterback in 1992 and 1993. He has been a QB Coach at Louisville (2003-06) and was Associate Head Coach in 2007 and 2008. After coaching at FAU, Illinois and UAB, Brohm joined Bobby Petrino's staff in 2013 as Associate Head Coach and then took over as Head Coach in 2014. Brohm coached the Hilltoppers to an 8-5 record in 2014, a 12-2 record in 2015 and a 10-3 record in 2016, winning Conference USA in 2015 and 2016. He was hired by Purdue on Dec. 5, 2016, taking over a program that had won just nine games the previous four seasons. Purdue made a bowl in Year 1, finishing 7-6 overall after a win in the Foster Farms Bowl. This season the Boilermakers lost their first three games, but have since recovered to win 5 of the last 7.
Why He's Not? Brohm currently has a $4.4 million buyout until Dec. 5 when it drops to $3.3 million. Purdue has said they are prepared to do what it takes to retain him.
Bovada's Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 1/3
Sunday Update: Tyra and Brohm are expected to have first "official" contact today.

NEAL BROWN - Troy HC
Current Spot:
33-15 overall at Troy, now in his fourth season
Why He's Hot? He has a phenomenal offensive system that is fun to watch and Hell to prepare for. He's already coached two teams to 10-plus wins and this season is heading that way, too, at 8-2 already. He has won the Sun Belt (Fun Belt) and he won the 2016 Dollar General Bowl and the 2017 New Orleans Bowl. He's from Kentucky (Boyle County) and has family in the area. 2017 Sun Belt Coach of the Year. And he's only 38 and he's making less than a million per year.
Why He's Not? Can he recruit at an elite enough level to beat Clemson or FSU? I'm not sure what else there is to dislike, and don't start with the UK stuff (Schnellenberger, Tyra, etc...)
Bovada's Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 6/1

BARRY ODOM - Missouri HC
Current Spot: 19-18
overall at Missouri, now in his third season
Why He's Hot? Odom advanced from Missouri's defensive coordinator to head coach three years ago. He built Missouri from 4-8 to 7-6 and then to 8-4 this year. You might think, why would he leave an SEC East school to come to the ACC? Well, Odom is making just $2.97 million per year and he probably should get a new deal with the Tigers.
Why He's Not? He seems like a Missouri lifer. He went to Memphis for three seasons, but came back to Missouri. Is this "interest" in Louisville a ploy to get a better contract at Missouri?
Howie's Odds to be Louisville' Next Coach: 20/1

xprpesmk2gsipbyxvzcs

LUKE FICKELL - Cincinnati HC
Current Spot:
13-9 overall, now in his second season at Cincinnati
Why He's Hot? He took over a mess and won four games in 2017. This season Cincinnati is playing with purpose and fire, winning 9 of 10 games and currently leading the AAC East. Fickell is a hard-nosed dude, aggressive and a Coach passionate about practice. He has spent most of his career at Ohio State and would likely call that his dream job, but it isn't open right now and he's probably going to leave Cincinnati at some point. On a personal note: I also respect anyone who can manage six children.
Why He's Not? Yeah, I don't have much here. Not much experience? Maybe the Zach Smith stuff at OSU?
Bovada's Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 15/1
Howie's 11/18 Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 20/1
Howie's 11/25 Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 30/1
Sunday Update: There has been contact between the parties within the last week.

BRENT VENABLES - Clemson DC
Current Spot:
Clemson's defense is one of the best in the nation.
Why He's Hot? He has built defenses that win at the highest level. He's a strong recruiter, a brilliant tactician, a phenomenal worker and a grinder. People around him absolutely LOVE him.
Why He's Not? He's never been a head coach. Would he actually leave? Despite being a coordinator, that's a real question. Clemson is paying him $1.7 million a year and he doesn't have to deal with all the stuff a head coach has to deal with. Also, he's a bit odd, in a quirky obsessive sort of way.
Bovada's Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 16/1
Howie's 11/18 Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 30/1
Howie's 11/18 Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 30/1

DINO BABERS - Syracuse HC
Current Spot:
16-18 overall at Syracuse, now in his third season
Why He's Hot? The losing overall record at Syracuse isn't stellar, but we also have to remember what he took over. He's building a winner at Syracuse and that is a major accomplishment. The fact that they are 8-2 this season is fairly ridiculous. He's so easy to love. The more you interview him, the more you like being around him. The players seem to love playing for him.
Why He's Not? Would he leave an Atlantic Division team to go to another Atlantic Division team? Maybe. Also, the overall record isn't great.
Bovada's Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 16/1
Howie's 11/18 Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 10/1

MATT CAMPBELL - Iowa State HC
Current Spot:
17-17 so far at Iowa State, now in his third season
Why He's Hot? He won at Toledo, compiling a 35-15 record and winning the league twice and then turned Iowa State from 3-9 his first year to 8-5 last season as the Big 12 Coach of the Year. This year they 6-3 so far, but seem to have a team that fans enjoy coming to see. He's very young, taking the ISU job on his 36th birthday.
Why He's Not? Campbell signed a six-year, $22.5 million dollar extension last November and it includes a $7 million buyout. There could also be concern about whether Louisville could lure him away from a place he seems to love.
Bovada's Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 16/1
Howie's Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: Off

fwyvrlr9i6a4f3eo2fyf

JASON CANDLE - Toledo HC
Current Spot: 26-12 so far at Toledo, now in his fourth season
Why He's Hot?
He took over Toledo when Matt Campbell left for Iowa State and they both have a Mount Union coaching heredity. He has been coaching at Toledo since 2009, rising up through the ranks as Toledo's success brought new jobs for several head coaches.
Why He's Not? While I don't believe he'll be at Louisville, some team is going to get a very good coach. For Louisville? It would be a risk given his lack of experience anywhere other than Toledo. He also just signed an extension through 2021.
Bovada's Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 25/1
Howie's Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: Off

cd9lagng5ytziqkkhh0h

SCOTT SATTERFIELD - Appalachian State HC
Current Spot:
48-24 so far at App State, now in his sixth season
Why He's Hot? High-scoring offense, great passers, good running backs, explosive plays... he checks the boxes for an exciting new coach. He is an Appalachian State grad and, after six seasons as head coach, he may have found his career spot.
Why He's Not? He went from Appalachian State to Toledo and FIU and then back to Appalachian State. He has never coached or recruited to a Power-5 school.
Bovada's Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 25/1
Howie's Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: Off

RYAN DAY - OC and QB Coach at Ohio State
Current Spot:
Ohio State is Top 10 and in playoff contention
Why He's Hot? The 39-year old Day has moved from New Hampshire to Boston College to Temple to the Eagles and 49ers and now back to college. He is a Chip Kelly disciple, having played for him at UNH.
Why He's Not? He has limited head coaching experience, only serving as a placeholder for Urban Meyer for the first three games this season (3-0), but he comes from a strong Coaching Tree working alongside Meyer, Kelly, Addazio, etc...

Where Did It Go Wrong?

I am looking for some factual answers to this question: How does a team go in two years from a potential college playoff team with a Heisman winner at QB to a 2 win team with one of the worst defenses I have ever seen? Also, how long will it take to get back to winning (not sure about the talent on the team now and among recruits coming in).

My admittedly uninformed view is that the staff around Petrino was incompetent, beginning with his son and son in laws, and this damaged recruiting and play.

** Howie's Quick Hits - Sunday at 2 am **

- All eyes forward now - it's all about Brohm.

- Those conversations "officially" begin today (Sunday) and could either work fast or work slow, but either way everyone I have talked to believes the deal will get done. Tyra and Brohm will be tallking Sunday.

- Louisville is a bit of tough spot because Brohm has all the leverage right now. He has a job, he kinda likes that job and they are willing to pay him a bunch of money to stay. Tyra's leverage, I'm told, is that he knows Brohm and the entire family want to return home.

- So many UofL folks gave me no answer tonight at the game. Most smiled broadly like they all know it is coming, but no one on record. That is by design.

- How far along as the "unofficial" negotiations? I'm told coaches from around the country were contacting Brohm and the Purdue staff telling them they would love to join him at Louisville.

- There are a few familiar names who would love to come back to Louisville if given the chance. Brohm will have to decide if it would be danger to bring any of them back and whether or not they fit with the culture he wants to build.

- Rondale Moore is in play, according to Dave Lackford. Wandale Robinson might be in play as well, according to Dave Lackford... neither are a done deal, but can you imagine? Wow.

- Louisville just got drubbed by Kentucky and I can't help but feel relieved that this horrible season is over. There were so many things that went wrong that I am honestly going to be dissecting everything for the next 9 months as we prep for next season.

- One side note - as we walk out of the Football Complex tonight, I notice a giant 10-foot chart on the wall with all the defensive players names on it and all sorts of stats and points. Typical stuff you see in a lot of football complexes. Major issue? The last update of any of the stats was 10/29/18.

- I have a whole bunch of scuttlebutt about the guys currently on campus, on roster, but I don't want to depress you with all the details when we should all be looking forward to the future.

- I saw Dr. Neeli Bendapudi and her staff after the game (she greeted and thanked all the players as they headed to the locker room), and I told them "Brighter days ahead..." and several of them replied "Absolutely." immediately.
