Mike doesn’t usually break news, so I would say when he does, it is accurate. And Mike knows the Brohms very well.

Jeff has always been my first choice, and I hope that he will return home where his family wants him to live and coach.

OK, things are not always as simple as they appear to be, so what options do we have? There are clearly a lot of excellent candidates out there, but if Vince does not at least reach out and talk to Neal Brown, we will be missing a very excellent opportunity. Anyone interviewing Brown can ascertain his level of motivation, and rather quickly determine if any remnant loyalties exist at a rival school. Just for comparative purposes, look at how much closer Brohm is to UL than Brown is to UK; yet, Jeff appears to be struggling in his decision to return home to UL over Purdue.

Brown’s UK connection is over—stated ........... Neal transferred from UK and enrolled at UMass where he graduated. Growing up in Boyle Co KY does not necessarily make you a die-hard UK fan (just look at the Leffew brothers). The majority of Brown’s experience goes back to Troy (assistant coach & HC) and Texas Tech, not so much at UK. Tony Franklin and Tommy Tuberville have more influence in Brown’s football education than either Mumme or Stoops.

Troy is located in South Alabama, very close to the upper peninsula of Florida, a very fertile recruiting ground. This guy is innovative and smart; his offense demands that his players play fast and that requires as much mental discipline as it does physicality ............... something this UL team needs desperately.

Again, Jeff is my 1st choice, but eliminating Brown as a candidate if Jeff declines UL would be a huge mistake.

Vince and Jeff are meeting now in Indianapolis. Let’s hope this is the final step in bringing Jeff home!

Hearing Plan B is Appalachian State's head coach Scott Satterfield.

He attended Appalachian State from 1991 to 1996 and started 27 games at quarterback from 1992-95 under Coach Jerry Moore. As a senior in 1995, Satterfield led the Mountaineers to an undefeated regular season and the quarter final of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs, where they lost to Stephen F. Austin State University. He earned first-team all-conference honors as a senior.

Satterfield graduated from Appalachian State in 1996 with a degree in physical education.

Whether or not these studies show long term impact on kid's brains or not really doesn't matter. Just the idea that football can impact brain development in their kids will scare parents resulting in them being steered away from football. I don't see this getting any better for American football, only worse. No helmet can prevent your brain from moving around and ramming into the surrounding skull.


Football affects youth brain development after just one season, study says

Their youthful brains were developing normally, with no signs of developmental, psychological or neurological problems. None had ever had a concussion. But by the end of a single football season, 24 children between the ages of 9 and 18 who had more frequent impacts to the head showed signs of damage to brain development, new research says.

"Repetitive head impact exposure may have a cumulative effect in the rapidly developing brains of youth and high school football players," said study co-author Gowtham Krishnan Murugesan, a radiology research assistant at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, adding that the results mirror other recent findings.

The study outfitted 60 youth and high school football players who had no history of head trauma or developmental issues with a head impact telemetry system that measures the magnitude, location and direction of impacts to the head. The researchers were not looking at whether the impact resulted in a concussion, only that impact occurred.

The children were sorted into two categories: high cumulative head impact players (24) and low cumulative head impact players (36).

Before beginning to play, each child had a resting state functional scan, known as an fMRI; the scans were repeated at the end of football season. The researchers were trying to see how exposure to repetitive hits affects the normal "pruning" process in the brain that occurs during adolescence.

"Pruning is an essential part of brain development," Murugesan said, comparing the process to how a tree needs to have dead or unneeded branches cut to keep it healthy and allow it to grow.
"Disruption in normal pruning has been shown to be related to weaker connections between different parts of the brain," he said.

After comparing the functional MRI results to the player's level of impact, the researchers found that youth in the high-impact group had damage to their brains' pruning process after one season. "Our study has found a significant decrease in gray matter pruning in the frontal default mode network, which is involved in higher cognitive functions, such as the planning and controlling of social behaviors, " Murugesan said.

Although the "teenage years are a critical time for brain development, brain remodeling or synaptic pruning, this was a short-term study and did not follow the players longitudinally over several years. We don't really know the full application," said Dr. Julian Bailes, director of neurosurgery and co-director of the NorthShore University HealthSystem Neurological Institute, who was not involved in the research.

Weill Cornell neurologist Dr. Richard Isaacson, who was also not involved in the study, called the research "early" and said the results don't necessarily "translate to a clinical or cognitive outcome." More research is needed to see whether the decline in brain pruning permanently affected the child's cognitive function or whether the brain's natural plasticity allowed it to repair itself.

"I would call this a pilot study," Isaacson said. "The call to action would be that we need more robust longitudinal studies with a pre- and a post-assessment of more than brain imaging. The study should also measure cognitive and neurological function and look for changes."
As we learn more about the issue, Isaacson said, parents should do everything they can to limit contact in sports, "especially in practice before games, where studies show the majority of contact occurs."

Bailes pointed out that caution should be used in all sports, not just football.
"It's soccer; it's ice hockey; it's wrestling," he said. "It's any sport that has the potential for collision and head impact."

Illinois went 4- 8 this season. They gave up 63 points 3 times and 50 plus twice(Purdue scored 46 against them). Lovie Smith is 9-27 in 3 seasons, and has 3 seasons remaining on his contract.
And they gave him a 2 year extension.

His buyout was 12 million and apparently the school did not want to pay that. So they decided to
pretend the program was heading in the right direction and rewarded him with the extension(I'll bet a lot of recruits fall for that trick). The details of the extension are not yet available but a Columnist that follows the Illini believe it most likely did not increase the buyout, which decreases by $4MM every year he is there.

deal most likely gets done for around 6 years 36 million. In that range at least. We will know within in a few days. Yes brohm is in Texas recruiting but both sides wants to get deal to get done. So should happen

- Negotiations continue between Louisville and Brohm, I hear. While I still think there is going to be a deal, I certainly understand why it isn't already done. (hint: details)

- Jeff has leverage. He has a good job, he's happy and he knows that Louisville fans believe he is the only candidate. Vince Tyra is not really negotiating from a position of strength and I'm not sure Vince likes that. I certainly wouldn't. I'd rather be coming to the table with other options.

- What does that mean? Louisville is going to have to pony up cash and considerations (term of contract, assistant salaries, etc...) to make the deal work.

- And to be clear, Vince HAS other options - there are some very good football coaches who want to come to Louisville - but Vince also understands the fan base well enough (and he hears all the chatter) to understand that Jeff is THE candidate.

- What do I mean? Well, Luke Fickell would be very good here. He's a very good coach, he can win a lot of games, he would recruit very good players and Louisville would be a fringe Top 25 team in two years (in my opinion). But is Fickell sell-able to a Louisville fanbase over Brohm?

- I forgot to post earlier but I included Odom and Venables on the Hot Boards out of a sense of obligation. They'll be removed in the update tomorrow morning.

- Let's talk dates...
Dec. 1 - That's Vince's birthday, and he told Kent Spencer he'd like to have Louisville's new coach by then.
Dec. 5 - That's the day Brohm's buyout drops by $1.1 million.
Dec. 19 - That's the early Signing Period for football prospects, the date that Vince told me a full staff needs to be in place (this was back before he even fired Petrino).

Just attempting to get a feel for how much some of you would pay for Jeff Brohm to come home. I’d really like to hear from those original “bring Jeff home” folks that have been increasingly supportive of having Jeff as our next head football coach. I’m in favor of bringing Jeff home but I don’t want to break the bank to do that. Plus I don’t feel that his record indicates that he deserves $6 mil per year for a 5 or 6 year period. But that’s just me. How about it “Trinity mafia” folks? How much are you willing to have UofL pay for his services. And if he does come home are you willing to give close to a cool million for Holt to be the DC?

...After firing their HC over the weekend. How long do we do the dance with Brohm? Is it good or bad that we aren't hearing much but idle speculation? We got 9 (NINE) recruits right now. Just my opinion but we drag this out for a week or more and don't get Brohm, Tyra isn't going to end up looking good. People will say we should have hired an experience AD. JB either wants to be here or he doesn't so let's move on to someone who does.

But just thinking about the UofL job and the record that Jeff has complied to this point . . . . . Well you get my drift. I’m thinking about the adidas money and the additional ACC/ESPN financial boon to UofL with all of this. What I did not “add in” was increased season ticket sales, including suite sales.

Sorry guys, I'm referring to the Cardinals game tonight against Miami of Ohio.

The girls finally get to play a home game and the ESPN watch app said the game will stream live. So I'm there to watch it and there's nothing. Just a graphic saying your ACC event will begin shortly.

It was in the ESPN schedule for 7pm. Thinking maybe my Concast or tablet was acting up I rebooted and now the game is not on the ESPN watch schedule. It just disappeared.

What the hell? Nothing UofL is running smoothly. Cant even watch the 5th ranked team on the biggest network in sports.

Good Monday morning everyone. I had some items of note to go over as we start this presumably very busy week and get you up to speed on what is happening in the Louisville football program so let's begin.

- I have noticed reports of names being put out there as legitimate options in the Louisville head coaching search so I wanted to set the record straight. Jeff Brohm is Louisville's #1 target and at this point talking about other names is just a lot of, in Charlie Strong's term, fake juice. I'm not saying Brohm couldn't turn the job down and one of those names become a legitimate option, but at this point, Brohm is the focus. Basically every name being thrown around as having mutual interest should just have an asterisk stating if Brohm remains at Purdue.

- Now that we have cleared that up let me just state a reminder that if/when you hear something a little concerning about the negotiations with Brohm, just keep in mind the negotiation process doesn't involve one offer and and an immediate acceptance. There WILL be ups and downs in any negotiation process so don't get discouraged if we hear rumblings of the two sides not being on the same page etc.

- I wanted to post this here for those that may have missed it on Saturday. I know most people didn't really want to read/hear/see anything more on the Louisville/Kentucky game but I did a post game article 100% focused on some areas Louisville needs to improve going forward. - An important Louisville recruit has been on campus this weekend in 4-star offensive tackle Marcus Dumervil. On Saturday I saw Pete Nochta being Dumervil's personal chauffeur before the Governor's Cup game. For those who may not be aware, Marcus Dumervil is the cousin of Dejmi Dumervil-Jean and the nephew of Elvis Dumervil. I spoke with a source close to Marcus' recruitment who stated that the Dumervil family still considers Louisville home despite Bobby Petrino not being here. The source went on to say that while they didn't really know a timeline on the matter, they felt certain that Marcus Dumervil will end up at Louisville before it's all said and done.

- At one point Louisville had 3 tight ends committed in the class of 2019 in Sam Snyder, Austin Griffin, and Jeremiah Pruitte. Now, Louisville only has one in Sam Snyder, and that commitment is on shaky ground with Missouri looking to get involved in his recruitment. This is a position of desperate need for when Louisville's next coach is officially announced as Jordan Davis is the only returning scholarship tight end for 2019. Priority #1 of the new coaching staff will be working to hold on to Sam Snyder but they will also have to go out and find a couple more prospects who will need to be able to play immediately.

- As soon as news breaks of Louisville's new coach @Dave Lackford and I will be keeping you all up to date on all the recruiting news and information you could ask for so make sure to stay tuned in for that.
