Impressions from last night

I like the change in attitude from Malik Williams. Played hard/scrappy at both ends of the floor.

Jordan Nwora needs to play under control. Takes a lot of bad shots. There are games he hits those shots. But to beat the better teams he has to play within the structure of the offense. If he learns to do that, UL will be a lot better basketball team. He is far and away our best offensive player. During the stretch where the lead got cut to 2 late in the second half, Nwora was not on the floor. Hope he learned from that.

Enoch has a chance to be a good player for us. Needs to make his moves around the rim a little quicker.

Guards have a long way to go but have potential. I thought Perry played a little more under control. Has a chance to be a very good player. We have to take a lot better care of the basketball. Had a number turnovers on lazy in-advised passes.

VJ looked more confident and played better at the defensive end. VJ does not have a well groomed offensive game. He can hit outside shots, but lacks consistency doing it. He makes good moves to the rim, but has trouble finishing. Still, I think should be our best all around player.

I think this team will grow into a dangerous team. Unfortunately I think it will be a lot like last year with a lot of ups and downs. And because of the really difficult schedule I would say we will probably be an NIT team.

3 Quick Hits from last night:

3 Quick Hits from last night:

Louisville beat Nicholls State 85-72 last night in the first game of the Chris Mack era.

HOW DO YOU FEEL?
The question was innocent enough, "Coach, you just won your first game at Louisville, how did it feel?"
Mack deadpanned: "Not very good to be honest with you. I don't think we played very well... we've got to figure it out."
Mack questioned Louisville's toughness, questioned their execution and said they have a long way to go.
"Hopefully tonight was a dose of reality for our guys," Mack said.
Mack isn't giving these guys any excuses, and I like that.

LACK OF KILLER INSTINCT
Louisville seemed to have the game in hand, up 14 at one point in the second half before Nicholls State came roaring back to make it a one-point game, 68-67. Mack didn't take a timeout.
"You are right, I didn't call a timeout," Mack said. "Armchair quarterbacks can call a timeout and they can go out there and hit another three. I wanted our guys to figure it out."
Louisville was able to push the lead back out to 13 points by the end of the game, but Mack still wasn't happy. He saw a team playing with abandon and it wasn't his squad.
Mack explained, "We have got a long way to go, I give Austin and Nicholls State a lot of credit for coming in here and playing fearless."

PARADE TO THE FOUL LINE
Louisville's Steven Enoch hit 9 for 9 from the foul line. VJ king ended up hitting 10 out of 12. Three more Louisville players hit six free throws, Christen Cunningham was 6-6 and Jordan Nwora and Dwayne Sutton were 6 of 8. In all, Louisville hit 42 of 55 free throws in the ugly game.
Nicholls State hit 12 of 16 free throws.

I don't understand why VJ King is playing...

...Granted, vacating an NIT season has limited downside. But we now have two pieces of evidence linking VJ King to adidas guys who were convicted in a pay-for-play trial. And VJ ends up playing for an adidas school.

I'm not similarly convicting VJ on evidence of this quality. Do we really know whether VJ is innocent? And since we're pretty sure the NCAA will soon come-a-knockin', do we really wanna chance that they have no evidence against King?

I'm not sure of any of that stuff...

Darius Perry & Dwayne Sutton

The two guys on this team that I think will embody the style and philosophy that Coach Mack is trying to implement the most are Perry and Sutton. Both have all a little dog in 'em. Not afraid to get into you and get after it.

Perry needs to improve his overall decision making (bad fouls, etc.) while Sutton is a bit undersized he is not backing down from anyone.

For all the talk about Nwora and VJ King (who for whatever reason right now just continues to look uncomfortable on the floor) Perry and Sutton appear to be the key glue guys in my opinion.

The X factor in the Petrino/Brohm conversation.

The numbers have been laid out by everyone in what it would take to get rid of Petrino and bring Brohm in.

The one thing that isn't being considered are boosters that have backed off after Jurich and the basketball coach were fired.

Would some of those boosters start giving again or give one time in order to get Brohm? I think it's very possible and an X factor that no one has mentioned.

Coach Mack

Gets his first official win as the new Cards head coach..

It wasn't pretty and we got a ways to go but his 1st win is in the books..

Offensive rebounding gotta get better, shot selection gotta to get better and defense needs to get tougher.. Free throw shooting was pretty good and Enoch played well.. I thought William's played hard, Perry played hard.. VJ just isn't improving like you'd think.. He reminds me of Blackshear..

Anyway, got a win. Let's get better and win some more.

Lou-ugh-ville

From this week's ESPN Bottom 10:

10.
Lou-ugh-ville (2-7)

I've been working the phones of both the AAC and the ACC to see if we can't add a last-minute December matchup between Louisville and UConn. We'd call it the Big East Congeniality Bowl, and honestly, the game would take a backseat to the postgame handshake between Bobby Petrino and Randy Edsall. It would be like that scene in "Avengers: Infinity War" when Thanos met the Red Skull, only scowlier.

I hate that we are bad enough to be in this list, but I do always love reading Ryan McGee's column. Wonder if we can get Larry Taylor, Bilal Powell, and Steve Kragthorpe to join the pre-game for a fake coin toss?!

BREAKING: Dawkins planned to pay Ray Spalding, VJ King

Here is the excerpt:
"Dawkins proposed paying Louisville forward Spalding $2,000 per month from October 2017 to December 2017, then $3,000 per month until April 2018. He also planned to pay King $2,000 per month from October 2017 until April 2018, although he noted it "will be a messy situation in my opinion."

Spalding left for the NBA draft following the 2017-18 season and was a second-round pick of the 76ers.

"Our university continually reviews the eligibility of all of its student-athletes," a Louisville spokesman told ESPN. "We have reviewed information recently presented at the trial in New York and do not believe it affects any of our current student-athletes. We will continue to monitor any new information that becomes available."

Civility and Respectful Discussion?

FTR, I'm posting this thread purely as a message board poster and reader. Am I just old fashioned and behind the times? Believe me, I have certainly given that possibility great consideration. What happened to basic civil and respectful discussion and debate? Why can't people have differing viewpoints and opinions without attacking or aggression towards others with a different view or perspective? Why can't a poster counter another poster's comments without casting personal dispersions on their intelligence or knowledge? I KNOW it's possible to say "I hear what you are saying, but I have a different viewpoint or experience, here are MY thoughts on the topic". For me personally, it's become too difficult to have meaningful discussion on message boards (not just this one BTW, it's on every message board, and social media in general). That's why I've stepped back from posting very much anymore; it's just exhausting to deal with the alpha dog/smartest guy in the room mentality that permeates message boards these days. It's doesn't seem to be enough to voice one's opinions; posters want to WIN the debate and "personally" DEFEAT their opponent with aggression and condescension. Anyways...that's MY thoughts on the topic...what are yours?
