Unless we figure out why; I do not see a solution

There is no shortage of criticism of this FB Program (TJ, Petrino, his assistants and the players), as well as questions as to how we got to this place. What is missing is any real explanation as to the “how, who and why”. For me, the lack of transparency is not about what the fans need to know; rather its about what CBP and his staff have been doing without any accountability, and specifically how we avoid experiencing anything like this again. No one learns from mistakes without understanding the root cause(s).

I believe CardsDan has come about as close to providing some clues as to “the who, what and when”, but I would hope that before Bobby gets any paycheck that he sits down with Vince and provides “chapter and verse” as to the genesis of this train wreck ................. otherwise, I am afraid that any new HC will struggle with turning this around any time soon.

Serious Question

Is Bobby just a bad recruiter or what exactly has happened to him??

I am NOT here to cast stones, as I remember the pain of Joker and Billy G years. Those took away alot of the joy of watching 2 sports for multiple seasons.

I haven’t followed his downfall closesly, so I was genuinely wondering how he went from being one of the best offensive minds in college football to this....

A healthy rivalry is good for both schools and the state. I hope you get Brohm or Brown.

The stats dont lie...........

These numbers are embarrassing:

lost 54-23 at Syracuse.... 518 yards allowed (326 rushing)
lost 77-16 at Clemson.... 661 yards allowed (492 rushing)
lost 56-35 at UofL vs Wake Forest.... 591 yards allowed (368 rushing)
lost 38-29 at BC.... 430 yards allowed (251 rushing)
lost 66-31 at UofL vs GT.... 554 yards allowed (542 rushing)

UofL has allowed an average of 58 pts per game over the past 5 games.
a total of 2,754 yards allowed, which is an average of 550 yards per game. (395 average rushing yards allowed per game)

Former Team Captain Jake Smith's comments on Coaching

“The secondary has played serviceably in coverage,” former U of L captain Jake Smith said Monday. “But teams don’t need to throw the ball because we’re so bad in the front seven. Guys look lost out there.”

“Most (former players) I’ve spoken to — 10 or 15 guys — have said this is a poorly coached team,” said Smith, an offensive lineman who captained Petrino’s 2014 team. “It’s kind of a consensus. We have good players. We have good-looking players. (But) they don’t use their hands. For a defensive lineman, you’re not going to stop an offensive lineman unless you get your hands in his chest.”
Smith, a four-year starter at U of L, made pointed criticisms of the current team last month on the condition of anonymity. But after watching the Clemson debacle, he agreed to share his frustrations for the record.
“Pursuit is an issue, and pursuit is coachable,” he said. “I have a hard time speaking to the technique of a corner. But you don’t have a hard time watching effort. It’s just obvious that coaching could be better.”
Specifically, Smith finds fault with the play of the front seven — the defensive line and linebackers — two units coached by Petrino’s sons-in-law, L.D. Scott and Ryan Beard.
“The technique in the front seven is why Clemson, Georgia Tech, Boston College and Wake Forest are able to run all over us and why our sack numbers are so poor,” Smith said. “The run fits at linebacker were atrocious.’’
By “run fit,” Smith refers to a linebacker’s reading of the offensive line to determine what gap to fill to make a play or force a runner into the teeth of the defense.

“Our run fits are routinely bad, which is why you see runners routinely get to the secondary,” he said. “That long touchdown up the home sideline that (Matt) Colburn from Wake Forest had on us is a perfect example.”
Smith said Clemson was able to average better than 13 yards per rushing play because of the lack of gap integrity from the defensive line, which he blamed in part on “non-existent hand technique.”

Best at being the worst

So I say we keep Bobby for the next two games but instead of coaching - we give him a mascot outfit with a bell and a bucket and send his ass to Target. Let Bill Murray coach out the rest of the season and back to free tickets with Thortons coffee. 1$ beers wouldn't hurt either. I'm too defeated to google the stats but I'm pretty sure we're the worst power 5 team by a landslide. Let's just add add some flair to this absurdity and hope there's good news around the corner.

Go Cards don't let UK break 90.

Question about money...

Lots of talk about money, mostly stemming from the ludicrous buy out provisions in CBP's contract. I know, I know; no one thought it would be necessary but here we are. FWIW, it appears we are out of athletic spending money mainly because of the totally unnecessary TJ buyout (~$8M) and the unexpected annual $2.4M YUM! flat rate increase for 2018...both actions decisions by the interim school administration.

Even if CBP had been dismissed "the right way" we were still looking at a $4M buy out fee for Mack or a similarly qualified replacement. I won't count Mack's Miami buy out as an "unexpected expense" because that feature/expense is unfortunately getting increasingly common when you are in a serious coaching search.

IOW, A LOT of "unexpected athletic expense" for 2018. And much of available cash on hand and ready reserve going to those expenses. I know the ULAA Hickman/Camp fund has already been hit for about $8M.

But getting back to probable forthcoming CBP buy out expenses of ~$14M for a new hire, if no other courses of action, what about the UofL Foundation?

Bill Olson put over $30M in ULAA money in the school foundation. I'm pretty sure Jurich was quite respectful of that money, borrowing a million here, a million there and repaying with interest. I believe I recall reading somewhere that it was pledged as collateral against the current ULAA stadium bond. But, even if so, it seems that might be a negotiable issue.

I know there are 3 games left but 2018 has gone beyond the proverbial "unexpected bad year". Other than FSU there has been no competitiveness whatsoever in the other 6 losses. Not an annual decline situation here but a total crash and burn situation. I'm not sure there are too many instances where a guy has come back from this type of losing season, especially with a team that had a recent history of doing quite well before he took over.

I simply cannot explain 2018 Cardinal football but it cannot be allowed to spread to out years. I think a change is stunningly unexpected, will be expensive but is necessary. Even with "the right guy" it will probably take a couple or 3 years to correct back to where we were just last year. But is very important to get a coaching selection right this time around - we are not TN, AU or LSU who have often had multiple coaches "under contract".

I was 100% behind CBP's second tour here but, barring a staggering turnaround these last 3 games I think UofL has to pull that multi-million dollar trigger. There is simply no reason to explain this year other than bad talent and/or bad coaching. But either reason falls under coaching.

There may be (but unlikely) better available coaches out there than Jeff Brohm but I'm not sure any would have a more immediate ticket impact he would. All JMO

Peace
