Louisville Football/Recruiting Q&A

It's about the roughest 2-2 start to the season Louisville could have asked for but, with that being said, there is a lot of football left to play this season. Where do the Cardinals go from here? Who can make an impact immediately in the 2019 recruiting class? Who else are the Cards looking to add in the recruiting class? Send in whatever questions you have and I'll do my best to give you my opinion on where things stand with the Louisville program.

OT - Louisville Basketball referenced in Judge Cavanaugh's '82 Yearbook

First, I don't want this to become a political thread, but politics aside, its pretty funny that UofL is mentioned in Judge Kavanaugh's Senior Yearbook profile.

My guess is that he's talking about this game:

Fear The FCS - 2018 FCS over FBS College Football Upsets - How & Why?

Illinois State Beats Colorado State

Illinois State, who we regard as a Top 5 team nationally in our College Football Today FCS Rankings, was able to upset the Rams 35-19 in Fort Collins, CO. We had no question that this would be a contest, but we did not see the Redbirds running away with this game so easily. With over 50 "3-Star" recruits boasted by the Rams and not one on the Illinois State roster, I believe this further proves the severe lack of scouting on a national scale in College Football Today.

After this performance, I’ve seen the writing on the wall.

I thought we may be able to get our stuff together, and I thought people were over reacting about Bobby’s coaching, but I can’t question it anymore. The fanbase has turned on him out of frustration. His record doesn’t really justify it, but the fact that we just got slaughtered by UVA is embarrassing and it may be time to move on. We are moving backwards. Unless this team turns it around I think he’s gotta go after this season.

That said, I think the guys you have to go after if Bobby is done are Brent Venables #1 (likely not happening), #2 Go back to the well and see if Charlie will come back, #3 Dave Aranda (LSU DC). If you want change you don’t hire Jeff Brohm. From what I’ve seen he will be more of the same. However, if you think our problem is just that Bobby is old and doesn’t care anymore maybe Brohm is your guy.

650 k for Nick, Scott and Beard

I am anything but a Petrino detractor but this season's results and coaching performance do not make this easy to swallow. If we are being completely honest, none of the three would even be employable at another P5-and likely D1 school. First, there's the whole nepotism thing that most universities avoid like cancer, and then there's the obvious that none have distinguished themselves in coaching outside of being married to a BP daughter or being his offspring.

QB in the pocket

this offense will not have success until a QB emerges who can make simple reads and throws on a soft zone. The offense has become one-dimensional and generic. Teams are stacking the box on run plays and dropping back on pass plays and we cant even dump it to the RB. Basically, we cant even execute simple plays the defense is giving us. Until we can find a QB who can make throws, has the aptitude to know where to throw, and has the confidence to make the throw, we will be a sub-par offense. I don't see how such a rapid improvement can be made from the pocket to salvage the season.

That was the worst pocket performance of a Louisville QB in the last 30 years, maybe more. We win that game with every QB we've had since J.Brohm.

Cards Now 10-10 since Houston Game in November 2016

I've kept this going a little while. So here's an update after the Virginia game.

This compares Louisville's W-L record under Bobby Petrino since the Houston game in 2016:

Since and Including Houston in 2016:

0-3 2016 (with Lamar)
8-5 2017 (with Lamar)
2-2 2018 (with "Puma"/Malik)

In the current 20 game span,

4-5 vs the ACC
1-4 vs the SEC
1-0 vs the B1G (@Purdue)
1-0 vs the MAC (Kent State)
1-0 vs the C-USA (Western Kentucky)
0-1 vs the AAC (@Houston)
2-0 vs The Little Sisters (Murray State, Indiana State)

Bobby Petrino's 2 Tenures at Louisville, compared:

BP1 was 41-9
BP2 was 26-9 before Houston game
BP2 is now 10-10 afterward

Beginning with the Houston game, Louisville under Bobby Petrino is:

6-9 vs Power Five (P5) competition
