Coaching candidates

I am not convinced that we can afford to go after Jeff Brohm as our next head coach, given his buyout, and Petrino’s insanely high buyout. Let’s have a thread for other candidates that we can afford.

4 names at the top of my list:

Manny Diaz
Defensive Coordinator at the U
One of the best defenses in the country and he can recruit Florida.

John Grass
Head Coach at Jacksonville State
JSU is a national power in FCS. The entire staff there is impressive. The team is fundamentally sound and is near the top of FCS in both offense and defense.

Kendal Briles
OC at Houston
Briles has asst coaching and recruiting experience in BOTH Texas and Florida. Houston’s offense is one of the best in the nation.

Brian Jean-Mary
DC at South Florida
Former UofL assistant who recruits his ass off. We would start pulling the kinds of recruits that we saw under Charlie.

I would be stoked with any of these guys and I think they would take the job without costing tens of millions of dollars. I welcome comments and discussion.

NBA G-League offering $125K to Players not yet NBA eligible

The NBA's G League will soon offer an alternative choice to playing college basketball for elite prospects that could threaten to significantly decrease the existence of the one-and-done player.

According to ESPN, the G League, the NBA's developmental league, is creating a new venture available to elite American basketball prospects that will serve as a one-and-done alternative. The opportunity for said prospects will include "Select Contracts" worth $125,000 beginning in the summer of 2019 to elite prospects who are at least 18-years-old but not yet draft eligible.

It will target recent or would-be high school graduates who otherwise would have likely spent just one season playing college basketball, enticing them not only with a six-figure salary but also the opportunity to benefit from NBA infrastructure, as well as a bevy of off-court development programs "geared towards facilitating and accelerating their transition to the pro game," [league president] Malcolm Turner said.

Elite high school prospects for years have elected to sign with college programs, fulfilling their NBA Draft requirements by being one season removed from high school in order to become draft eligible. This new route, however, would allow those prospects to cash in -- most importantly, legally -- while providing a path to becoming a pro in the NBA's developmental system.

NCAA president Mark Emmert said the G League's plan could be a viable option for some prospects not interested in going to college.

"We appreciate the NBA's decision to provide additional opportunities for those who would like to pursue their dream of playing professionally, Emmert said in statement. "The NCAA recently implemented significant reforms to support student-athlete success, including more flexibility when deciding whether to play professionally. Obtaining a college education continues to provide unmatched preparation for success in life for the majority of student-athletes and remains an excellent path to professional sports for many. However, this change provides another option for those who would prefer not to attend college but want to directly pursue professional basketball."

The NCAA in April formed a Commission on College Basketball chaired by Condoleezza Rice which subsequently formed recommendations to clean up the sport in response to the federal government's ongoing interest in weeding out corruption. Those recommendations, however, don't bend the amateurism model or provide monetary gains for players -- particularly those who provide significant value such as elite prospects. The G League's alternative path could provide what those prospects may choose to pass on in the NCAA, and offer a salary more commensurate with their value.

Still yet, the NCAA may provide a route the G League simply cannot: An opportunity to get an education. A scholarship's value is nowhere near the real value of a college player, especially for elite prospects, but there's a non-monetary value of being a legitimate star in the NCAA and becoming the face of a major college program.

All the while, the NBA's age limit could swing which direction players ultimately choose down the line. It's possible by 2022 the age limit changes, affording players the opportunity to jump straight from preps to the pros, but as things stand now, players must be at least 19-years-of-age or a year removed from high school to enter the NBA Draft.

FB RECRUITING: Louisville Football Recruiting Insider

Not too much has been going on in the world of Louisville football recruiting but I did want to update you all on a couple of different things to keep an eye on.

- Louisville is hosting JJ Weaver this weekend for an official visit and the Cardinals still appear to be in a good spot to land the 4-star prospect. Out of all the uncommitted local kids, Weaver appears to be the Cardinals' top possibility to join the class and the Louisville staff has continued to recruit him hard. With Miami, Purdue, and UK also hot on the trail, will making an official visit to Louisville the weekend before his commitment be enough to land him? We will keep you updated on what we are hearing.

- Shawnkel Knight-Goff, another local prospect, is scheduled to make his decision today. While he is deciding between Louisville and Kentucky, I don't think the Cardinals have a shot at all here. Look for the Knight-Goff to commit to UK (for the second time).

- Louisville is working on flipping a couple USF commits, CB Daquan Evans and LB/DE Raymond Cutts. For those that have followed recruiting for some time now you will remember Cutts' name being mentioned on multiple occasions and despite his commitment to USF, Louisville has remained in the mix. Evans is a new name in the mix and although he isn't quite as athletic as some recent DB commits for Louisville, he is versatile, high football IQ, and good range. A source told me that they believe Louisville can flip both prospects so we will be keeping an eye on them.

- Along with JJ Weaver visiting tomorrow, Louisville will also be hosting Jaden Johnson, Anthony Adkins, Aidan Robbins, and Jack Randolph among others. We will likely be getting the visitor list this afternoon and will update you when we receiver that.

Guilty verdicts in NY trial

The Adidas exexs were convicted in NY federal court today. This is good news for UofL. It means the jury bought the government argument the schools were victims. Also means other trials will go on and, more importantly, FBI investigation will continue. NCAA has to wait and if more schools are implicated it will make it harder for NCAA to hammer just one or a couple of schools.

Free market prices are a direct indication of demand. U of L and our most optimistic fans are counting on momentum with Chris Mack. Hard to confirm that so far with these prices...

Aidan Igiehon Commits To Louisville

Louisville landed its fifth ESPN 100 commitment in the Class of 2019, as big man Aidan Igiehon opoted to play for the Cardinals on Friday.

Igiehon, a 6-foot-9 native of Ireland who plays at Lawrence Woodmere Academy (New York), chose Louisville over a final four that also included St. John's, Oregon and Kentucky.

He took an unofficial visit to Louisville in June and followed it up with an official visit in September. The Cardinals made him a priority shortly after Chris Mack took over in the spring, and the school tracked him closely in July.

Ranked No. 36 in the ESPN 100, Igiehon slots in as the No. 8 power forward in the country. He's one of the stronger, more physical big men in the 2019 class, but also capable of running the floor and finishing above the rim.

Igiehon is also a terrific rebounder at both ends of the floor. He averaged 9.7 points and 6.4 rebounds on the Under Armour Association circuit with Team Rio National last spring and summer.

FB RECRUITING: Milton Wright update

As one of Louisville's top targets, Milton Wright has had one of the most under the radar recruitments as you can find so the information we get is generally few and far between. I spoke with two sources close to the program to get their take on where things stand regarding Milton and Louisville. One stated they believed Louisville had all the WR's they want and that they don't think Milton will be in the plan. The other, when asked if Louisville appears to still be a top contender said "I guess so. I believe they are still in the mix for Milton."

Overall those aren't very encouraging comments but it's not completely over. I'll keep monitoring and let you all know if I hear anything further.

On the rumors...

As many of you know, I am cautious - maybe overly so - to post anything without verification.

There is NO verification right now of anything involving Bobby Petrino and possible termination. That was a fake post and it got a whole bunch of people fooled. Be careful what you read and from whom.

There are all kinds of rumors - most fall within three different categories of firable offenses - but there does not seem to be a single media member ready to publish a story right now.

I know that UofL officials have talked about some of the rumors this morning - and I have received a bunch of texts from UofL people asking me what is going on.

Now, all of this could change - and may change quickly. I'll continue to monitor and text and DM, etc... with anyone who may know something.

Coaches being willfully ignorant...

Every college basketball coach should know EVERYTHING about this trial.

They don't. Coach after coach after coach after coach has been asked and SO MANY of them say they haven't been following it. (Mack said something along the lines of not following every little thing, which is different, but still eyebrow raising).

How are you not following this?!?

If I worked in a HIGHLY-PAID profession that included only about 50 millionaires (including me) in the ENTIRE WORLD and one of them just lost their job and a couple others could lose their jobs as well because of a systemic problem, you best BELIEVE I would be following that trial.

How could you not?

The fact that Jim Christian can say he doesn't know what the allegations against Pitino are, is FURTHER proof that many coaches are willfully ignorant of facets of their programs.

They don't WANT to know. Or they are pretending not to know.

My eyes have been opened through repeated scandals and repeated lies told to me by people in the coaching profession.
