Noteworthy Satterfield recruits

Now before any of you all say, “We don’t want any of App St’s recruits they’re terrible.” Keep in mind that guys of similar talent took Penn St. (A top 10 program over the last 2-3 years) to OT this year. We weren’t anywhere close to that competitive with any team close to that ranking.
There are about 3-4 guys that look promising based on positions of need, and measureables. The only guaranteed take on the list is the first guy. The others I’ll need to watch the film before I decide.

DJ Williams - RB 5’11” 210 Sebring, FL 3* Number 36 RB per 247.
5.7 per rivals (highest 3*)

Jourdan Heilig - OLB 6’2” 200 Concord, NC
3* per 247

Wyatt Tunall - OT 6’5” 270 Chester, SC 3* Per 247

Ricky Kofoed - TE 6’3” 221 Charlotte, NC 3*
Per 247

I pulled these guys is for a few reasons.
1. Positions of need - we need guys at RB, TE, OL, and the defensive front 7 badly.

2. Talent/location - these guys all being 3* recruits in competitive football states are on par with talent we have recruited in the past. In fact, most of the class is 3* per 247.

3. They are his guys (as every recruit on his board would be) - He has made a killing on developing talent for his system. This means they are likely disciplined and/or coachable. I believe someone ran the numbers and App St was in the top 10 in fewest penalties while he’s been there. To do that it takes a special type of player and coach. And we need both right now.

Edit: As gocds so estutely posted below this is all pending we actually make the offer and he takes it.

WBB Cards handle Huskers

A strong start to the fourth quarter propelled Louisville past Nebraska WBB 85-68 last night in the KFC YUM! Center in front of 7334. 8-0 run for the Cards. Then, it got weird. (See below)

I listened on the radio. Here's:

FIVE THINGS ABOUT THIS GAME:

1) She's "Durr-rific" !! Asia said "nite-nite" to the Huskers defense with 25 points and four threes. One of four in double-figures for the Cards, she was the benefactor of great passes from her teammates and 8-17 shooting.

2) The return of "TV Dee". If it's a big crowd or televised contest, it's likely pony-tail will be running the court. She put in an early season OSCAR performance last night with...wait for it...two technical fouls called on the Cards (Durr and Walz). Now...that's entertainment! Sitcom coming this spring..

3) Oh, no...she just didn't !! Jazmine Jones got the crowd up and roaring when she took an alley-oop pass from Asia Durr at the pinnacle of an amazing leap and kissed it home for two. I didn't see it, but Paulie says she could have dunked it. Over the Nebraska trees. Nice air, J.J. !!

4) Win the quarters, win the game. Louisville took ll four quarters and used a 8-0 run in the fourth to put this one away. Nebraska countered with a 9-0 run late, around the final three minutes of the contest -- aided by four technical free throw makes without the clock moving. Did you really need to call these, Dee? OK, Asia bounced a basketball a bit too hard. Whatever. Did you really think Jeff was going to smile and nod in agreement? The Huskers last lead was 11-10, right before the first quarter media timeout. Quarter breakdown -- 21-14, 19-17, 22-19, 23-18.

5) Post play. The Cards got a total of 22 points and 19 rebounds from Kylee Shook and Sam Fuehring. Fuehring with the double-double (14/10) and Shook just missing. The Louisville interior has improved dramatcally since the opener against WKU and I see it continuing to get better. Bionca Dunham added 11 points for this three-headed monster that dwells in the painted area of the arena by the river. BWAHHHAHAHAH !!!

7-0. A nice win over a team that will make some noise in the Big Ten. Overcoming height with speed and precision passing. Forcing 23 turnovers. 11 steals. A lot to like last night. It sounded just as good on the radio as I'm sure it looked to the attendees and internet viewers. The Final Four banner hung with care, in hopes that another will soon be there. Thanks for moving it to the end zone. Keep the most successful coach on campus happy, Vince.

TSU next on Sunday. Cheer on Volleyball tonight, too. They'll have their hands full with Dayton.

Remember Troy Jackson?

Sad ending:
"The 6’10” baller reportedly weighed in at roughly 500 pounds in high school and Wallace Community College in Selma, Ala., before dropping a buck and a quarter to make the roster at the University of Louisville."

"Don’t mistake Escalade as a Cadillac-sized gimmick. The dude could ball with the best of them. But, tragically, he passed away from heart disease at age 38 in 2011."

I'm sure some of you knew this but I wanted to pass it on to those like me that didn't.

On Ennis' show today - dropped that stat 5 head coaches left P5 HC gigs for another - Who are they?

So there are only 5 head coaches at Power 5 Conference schools who left another Power 5 Conference school for their current gig.

Who are they?

1. Dan Mullen left Mississippi State for Florida.
2. Jimbo Fisher left Florida State for Texas A&M
3. Willie Taggart left Oregon for Florida State

Does Mark Richt count at Georgia, or was he fired before Miami snatched him up?

Bronco Mendenhall left BYU for Virginia, but BYU ain't P5.

Who am I missing?

Anyway ... surely we can figure this out. But it's interesting as we failed in our bid to take Brohm away from Purdue, yet, we have interest (apparently) from 2 coaches at P5 schools who have their current team ranked. (Dino Babers - Syracuse, and Dana Holgerson - WVU). And now maybe a mystery man who reached out through representation today.

Clearly it's the modus operandi of P5 AD's to find a high level coordinator, or a head coach at a lower conference level.

Friday afternoon coaching search update

Nothing much to report here but I know people are hungry for info and I want to keep you all in the loop as best I can.

At this point I think the realistic candidates are Scott Satterfield, Chip Long, and Mike Norvell. From talking to people it sounds like Chip Long's name has been gaining some steam but, at least from what I've heard, Scott Satterfield is the top target by a fairly wide margin. Vince Tyra is expected to be meeting with Satterfield at some point this weekend and I heard there is a decent chance it could occur Saturday after Appalachian State's bowl game.

Theoretically guys like Mel Tucker, Dana Holgorsen, Mike Leach, etc. remain possibilities but I don't think they are at the top of the list... at least at this point.

Reactions: Cardinal Cash

Going forward.....

It's been an emotional two years for Cardinal athletics but I feel the worse is behind us and the 'sun' is starting to peak above the horizon. Athletic Director Vince Tyra has done a good job moving the program forward under burdensome circumstances. Chris Mack can get it done and no one predicted an upset over a top ten team in year one of his tenure as he tries to piece back together our fractured basketball program.
He handled the potential hiring of home boy Jeff Brohm as well as he could, it just didn't work out through no fault of his. The potential replacements for football coach appear to be good candidates but hiring new coaches is a roll of the dice as we've seen before. The best football hire in Cardinal history was Howard Schnellenberger and he had a losing record. There are no quarantees that success in one college location can transfer to another especially when it is a step up in level of competition. I'm sure Vince will do his due diligence and hire the best person possible.
At present Louisville has as good a group of coaches as any school in the country in all but one sport. There is no reason to think that football will not become part of that group.

HOT BOARD v5.0: Where does Tyra turn now?

Jeff Brohm has decided to stay at Purdue for another season or two. Let's examine some of the top coaching candidates for Louisville's next Coach.

Louisville Coaching Hot Board

SCOTT SATTERFIELD - Appalachian State HC
Current Spot:
48-24 so far at App State, now in his sixth season
Why He's Hot? High-scoring offense, great passers, good running backs, explosive plays... he checks the boxes for an exciting new coach. He is an Appalachian State grad and, after six seasons as head coach, he may have found his career spot. He's a very good coach as a very affordable option because his base pay is just $612,500 a year.
Why He's Not? He went from Appalachian State to Toledo and FIU and then back to Appalachian State. He has never coached or recruited to a Power-5 school.
Bovada's 11/18 Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 25/1
Howie's 11/25 Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 20/1

NEAL BROWN - Troy HC
Current Spot:
33-15 overall at Troy, now in his fourth season
Why He's Hot? He has a phenomenal offensive system that is fun to watch and Hell to prepare for. He's already coached two teams to 10-plus wins and this season is heading that way, too, at 8-2 already. He has won the Sun Belt (Fun Belt) and he won the 2016 Dollar General Bowl and the 2017 New Orleans Bowl. He's from Kentucky (Boyle County) and has family in the area. 2017 Sun Belt Coach of the Year. And he's only 38 and he's making less than a million per year.
Why He's Not? Is he heading to Texas Tech? Can he recruit at an elite enough level to beat Clemson or FSU? I'm not sure what else there is to dislike, and don't start with the UK stuff (Schnellenberger, Tyra, etc...)
Bovada's Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 6/1
Howie's 11/18 Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 20/1
Howie's 11/25 Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 20/1

LUKE FICKELL - Cincinnati HC
Current Spot:
13-9 overall, now in his second season at Cincinnati
Why He's Hot? He took over a mess and won four games in 2017. This season Cincinnati is playing with purpose and fire, winning 9 of 10 games and currently leading the AAC East. Fickell is a hard-nosed dude, aggressive and a Coach passionate about practice. He has spent most of his career at Ohio State and would likely call that his dream job, but it isn't open right now and he's probably going to leave Cincinnati at some point. On a personal note: I also respect anyone who can manage six children.
Why He's Not? Yeah, I don't have much here. Not much experience? Maybe the Zach Smith stuff at OSU?
Bovada's Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 15/1
Howie's 11/18 Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 20/1
Howie's 11/25 Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 30/1
Sunday Update: There has been contact between the parties within the last week.

MATT WELLS - Utah State HC
Current Spot: 44-34 overall at Utah State, now in his seventh season
Why He's Hot?
He's one of the sharpest young GAs or QC guys I have ever worked with. He reminds me so much of Dan McDonnell in the way he structures his program, who he recruits and how he builds things. He has won the Mountain West twice at Utah (Freaking) State. Fun offense. He actually reminds me of a hybrid of John L. (players would love him) and Bobby (schemer on offense, his brother coaches with him). Louisville could land him for less than $2 million a year.
Why He's Not? Could the fans get behind that hire? Can he recruit the South? Can he compete at the ACC level?
Howie's 11/26 Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 40/1

DINO BABERS - Syracuse HC
Current Spot: 17-19 overall at Syracuse, now in his third season
Why He's Hot?
The losing overall record at Syracuse isn't stellar, but we also have to remember what he took over. He's building a winner at Syracuse and that is a major accomplishment. The fact that they are 9-3 this season is fairly ridiculous. He's so easy to love. The more you interview him, the more you like being around him. The players seem to love playing for him.
Why He's Not? Would he leave an Atlantic Division team to go to another Atlantic Division team? Maybe. Also, the overall record isn't great, but he got to 9 wins at Syracuse in half the time it took Stoops to get 9 wins at Kentucky.
Bovada's Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 16/1
Howie's 11/18 Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 10/1
Howie's 11/25 Odds to be Louisville's Next Coach: 40/1

BILL CLARK - UAB HC
Current Spot:
23-12 overall at UAB, now in his third season
Why He's Hot?
He's building, literally, from the ground up at UAB. They didn't have a program in 2015 and 2016 and since returning they have an 8-5 season with a trip to the Bahamas Bowl last season and are currently 9-1 and 7-0 in the Conference USA West this season. He's 50 but acts like a 35-year old with good energy and pep.
Why He's Not? He's not had success at a major level. He's an Alabama guy through and through, born and raised and all of his coaching has been there. He's only been at the college level for a decade.

The Era of Salt continues

1. While there doesn't appear to be a consensus candidate here--yet--you never know how these things will turn out. As I'm a Nebraska fan sometimes the consensus candidate for a job ain't all it's cut out to be. The consensus for Nebraska fans back when Bill Callahan was sent packing was Bo Pelini, which produced mixed results for someone who is as much a maniac as Petrino and with many of the same reasons for losing the overall support of the fanbase (i.e. family on staff when things soured somewhat). But they never got back on solid footing. Frost wasn't a clear candidate when Pelini was shown the door because he had just gotten the Oregon O.C. title. It wasn't until his success at Central Florida and the timing of the Riley collapse that he because a clear candidate. In the end it took a long time before Nebraska go the right guy. The folks at USC thought Pete Carroll was an awful choice, and he went on to unprecedented success; Auburn fans went insane and Gene Chizik gets them to a title within two years.

The point is...winning galvanizes. We don't have the resources of the three programs I mentioned, but relative to our peers in conference--and UK--there is only a gulf between us and Clemson. But the gulf with Clemson is league-wide and not exclusive to us. We can recover, with the right person in place.

2. ...which is what makes Brohm tough. I liken his situation to Nebraska's but also a little to UK back when Billy Donovan was winning SEC and National Titles and Tubby Smith was coaching UK. It's one thing to have lukewarm support, it's a whole other to have the Golden Boy that the fanbase wants beating you. The guy in place doesn't stand a chance with a faction of the fanbase and it just kills our program that in consecutive years high profile kids went to the college football equivalent of a frontier outpost in West Lafayette. Every time Rondale Moore touches the football it's like a knife to the gut. Not only is he not here as our coach, he is here with the full attention of what few recruits there are in this town.

3. Frankly I'm not surprised that Brohm didn't come back and there are a ton of reasons I can speculate on; as I said a couple weeks back, I think the fact that he would be so wired into the problems we have here was to our detriment. I consider myself to be a pragmatist, and if I don't have faith in our Board of Trustees and the relationship of that group through the Athletic Department...I suspect I'm probably not exceptional there. ANYBODY taking or interviewing for a job wants to trust their boss; when you are hired for a job and then the boss changes...you're on the clock. This to me isn't a Vince Tyra problem, this is a broken trust problem between what constitutes a fanbase and paying shareholders--which is what a season ticket is--and the parties that be at UofL. People have emerging trust with Chris Mack. People have grown to trust Dr. Benaputi and her ripping Schnatter out of the scene bought her alot of equity. People still aren't 100% sure what to make of Tyra because he sits between the trusted group and a group that has put a Firewall between themselves and I'd say the University as a whole, not just the Athletic Department. Grissom is still seen as somebody pulling strings behind the curtain which is a perception that I think he relishes.

...so if I'm Jeff Brohm, and I know or suspect all of that far beyond what any of the other potential candidates for the UofL football coaching position would know...I take a pass. Beyond that as just an alum who was there for the Foundation being laid, I'd want to kill every kid that took the field with a Cardinal on their helmet for the disgusting abandonment of the season. He seems to like his kids at Purdue and their Administration...can we really say the same thing about what we have here at UofL right now?

What I'm Hearing About Mike Norvell at Memphis

Not sure what Louisville may have turned up in its own background checks and research in vetting candidates, but, I can tell you that Mike Norvell in last year's cycle had some personal indiscretions turn up that caused two SEC schools to move on from him as a candidate and I expect Louisville either has or will do the same soon.

That's all the detail I'll give but worth sharing. Please keep premium.

Brohm just interviewed on 93.9

Don’t normally listen to 93.9, but my son called and said Brohm was about to be interviewed. It will be replayed at 9.

Jeff said that the offers were equal, but it came down to the commitment he made to Purdue and his players. Players actually said they would leave to come here along with recruits.

He said it was a tough decision but it was about keeping his word. I highly recommend listening. He got real emotional when talking about telling his dad that he wasn’t coming home. He said even though the offers were equal money had nothing to do with it.
