Give the man a break..

There are currently many unhappy fans wanting to cut Coach Petrino and his staff loose as soon as possible. Come on guys, give the man a break. Yes coaching and organization is a vital key to success, but I firmly believe as I've stated before, great players make great coaches! Did you know that NBA Hall of Fame coach Red Auerbach had a won/loss record of 36-36 and 39-33 the two years prior to the drafting of the number two pick in the 1956 NBA draft, Bill Russell. Boston won the title in Russell's first year, lost in the finals his second season and then went on a tear through the 1966 season, winning the title every year. I liked Red Auerbach but he didn't become the legendary coach until he accumulated a roster full of future hall of famers. The same holds true for John Wooden while coaching at UCLA. Woodens won/loss record in the five seasons prior to his first NCAA title was really good 86-49. In the 1963/64 season his team was 30-0. What happened? Did he wake up one morning and suddenly become a coaching genius. I think not! He had a bevy of great players that fit his system and as they say, the rest is history. So before you grab your pitchforks and torches and demand that Coach Petrino be bought out, fired, or run out of town, let's learn from the past and "Give the man a break"!!!

Bobby Loyalists

Man you guys want so badly to believe that Brohm is average. I’ve seen a lot of “Bobby lite” when Brohm is discussed...why, because he coached under Bobby therefore he’s an inferior coach? The entire football world recognizes Brohm’s success, but not the Bobby truthers. Whether it’s at Louisville, Purdue, or another program, the man will be incredibly successful and you guys will look incredibly foolish.

Depth Chart

Let me preface this by saying I think Petrino's best days are behind him.

We can only blame previous recruiting, coaching decisions, etc., but we only have 6 seniors on our 2 deep depth chart. There are a lot of holes, but putting that in perspective and knowing that we truly only lose 3-4 starters on both sides of the ball, could set this team up for an improved year.

I've said it on here numerous times, our schedule next year is pretty rough, but you never know.

Whether its CBP, Brohm or friggin Luke Fickel we should take a step forward next year.

Petrino's Assistants and Staff...

I took a brief look at Petrino's staffs at U of L (1.0), Atlanta, Arkansas, WKU, and back at U of L (2.0). It was my effort to reality check the narrative about Petrino--the S.O.B.--not being able to attract and keep assistant coaches. Again, my check was brief, so I may have missed a couple...

Five of Petrino's staff members at WKU had prior connections including both coordinators, Jeff Brohm and Nick Holt.

Six of his current or former 2.0 staff members had WKU connections from his one year there. Another five of his current or former 2.0 staff members had connections prior to WKU. Here are those eleven staff members and their prior connections:

Kolby Smith - U of L 1.0, WKU
Lamar Thomas - WKU
Cort Dennison - WKU
Pete Nochta - U of L 1.0, WKU
Joe Miday - WKU
Scott Wilks - WKU
Garrick McGee - Jax Jaguars, Arkansas
Chris Klenakis - Arkansas
Mike Summers - U of L 1.0, Atlanta Falcons, Arkansas
Brian Van Gorder - Falcons
Lorenzo Ward - Arkansas

Another one of his Arkansas staff members had a U of L 1.0 connection (Reggie Johnson). And two other of his Falcons staff had U of L 1.0 connections (Kevin Wolthausen and Joe Whitt, Jr.) BTW, I intentionally did not include family members in this analysis; if I include people like Ryan Beard and L.D. Scott, the total grows.

In short, Petrino has a long record of developing relationships with players and coaches who have followed him to other gigs. Does that mean he gets along with everyone? Of course not. I don't either, and I'm a genuinely nice guy... ;)

In WBB news...

Red-shirt freshman Loretta Kakala is transferring to Pacific. The school is 15 minutes from her home-town. She seems excited about playing near home. She played in four games last year for Louisville and had 12 points and 12 rebounds before red-shirting.

Different reports surfaced about how she progressed this summer.

Best of luck to her at her new school.

UK, Duke and UNC mentioned in texts

Self, according to The Kansas City Star, told Gassnola he was happy with Adidas before adding "just need to get a couple real guys."

"In my mind, it's KU, Bill Self. Everyone else fall into line. Too (expletive) bad," Gassnola replied. "That's what's right for Adidas basketball. And I know I'm right. The more you have lottery picks and you happy. That's how it should work in my mind."

"That's how ur (sic) works. At UNC and Duke," Self replied.

Gassnola answered by saying Kentucky as well.

Given UL sports today, I have one issue...

We all have to admit that this, (as far as men's basketball and football is concerned), is very probably THE lowest point we have ever been as a university in sports.

I met Vince Tyra recently, and to be very frank, I am unimpressed. He is a VERY good man, do not get me wrong. But I am not at all convinced he is the right leader to get UL back to the upward path in both Men's basketball and football we, as fans, were so excited about.

I have not heard him yet lay out what he really intends to accomplish with the sports department, where he sees UL going, or how he wants to take it there. Other than very nebulous statements.

I am not saying replace him. So, let's get that out there right now. But I do think the clock is now ticking that he has to come up with a 5-year plan to get UL back in the national discussions; or after 5 years then we can have that discussion.

Given what has transpired UL needs very strong leadership, and while I think he is a very good administrator, I am just skeptical as a leader with a vision and the drive to get there. (An example was Jurich's vision to make UL and Louisville the best college sports city in the nation. That was a bold statement. And again, given where we are, TJ failed.)

2019 Top 300 FB Recruits OCT 16th FULL update (All Positions)

This is not about inferior recruiting; it is under performance of coaching

Driving to a funeral resulted in my listening to Rogers & Kupper on the radio, and for the first time this season I got a chance to just hear and appreciate just how many true freshmen were inserted into yesterday’s game and some of their contributions.

This is not in any way intended as some excuse for the horrible performance, but after witnessing these comparative Recruit Rankings to our Opponents (appearing on this site prior to our games); our recruiting HS talent does not appear to be the problem, as according to Rivals Star Rankings we stack up pretty well against the majority of ACC teams. (BC and Duke serve as a classic examples of doing more with less recruiting success by instilling a physical brand of football)

At the risk of “Mr Obvious” ......... our coaching from top to bottom is simply under performing. Not sure how we can blame Pete Sirmon or BVG ........... as neither one had sufficient time to influence the product on the field. Our playing so many true freshmen and underclassmen is an indication of a coaching staff that has failed to develop the Junior & Senior class kids during the 3 -4 year period. This falls directly on Bobby, particularly on the offensive side of the football.

Not Much To Say

After seven games and five losses, the obvious is before us. There are no winnable games left on the schedule-including Kentucky at home. Lot's of potential talent but very little in terms of instruction to improve the team that I can see. How many times have we seen the blitzes coming but we don't check out of the play or call out blocking changes. Halfway through the season we can't make checks on defense or offense. Our defense couldn't get lined up in a game game we had a chance to win. Then we substitute the QB late with third string freshman and leave the leading rusher ( your second string QB) on bench. The wheels are off this wagon. Please, somebody hit the reset button and tell me this is a bad dream.

I'm just curious to see the % of this poll.

Where do you stand on Bobby Petrino as Louisville's Head Coach?

  • Let's move on.

  • Stay the course with Bobby no matter what.

  • Support him for now and hope he turns it around but would replace him if we only win 3-4 games.

Results are only viewable after voting.

Don't want this to be a discussion thread, too many of those already on here about this. Just curious to see the breakdown.

Why You Should Keep Bobby Petrino

If you are looking for a reason to keep Bobby Petrino, then look no farther than South Bend, Indiana. Brian Kelly was a "Dead Man Walking" in 2016. His Notre Dame team was sitting at 4-8. His season had begun with high expectations coming off a 10-3 season with a Fiesta Bowl berth. He fired his Defensive Coordinator mid-season and drew the ire of the Irish fanbase.

Kelly had a pretty solid track record prior to this horrible season. He was 43-6 at Cincinnati then got his dream job at ND. At ND he started off with two 8-5 seasons and then had his dream season finishing 12-1. After the 12-1 season he had a 4-loss and a 5-loss season. The fanbase began to become restless again. Then came the 4-8 season. The administration stuck with him. Kelly revamped his staff and focused on recruiting. Since the 4-8 season his team has been 17-3.

There are a lot of parallels with Kelly and Petrino. Both have succeeded at similar schools (UC and UofL) during their climb up the coaching ladder. Both landed in much higher profile jobs, with tougher schedules, and higher fan expectations. Both have had or are having a down year.

Everyone knew deep down that Brian Kelly had not forgot how to coach. His track record showed that he knew how to win. The same can be said for Petrino.

The difference may be whether Petrino can make the changes that Kelly made and turn it around. That remains to be seen, but UofL should allow it to happen.
