IF Lunardi's newest bracketology is correct

then the Cards are headed to the Midwest bracket. Early round games are in Columbus and it's a tough draw IMO. Have to play Oklahoma in the opening game, and if the Cards win, they would most likely have to play Michigan State again. Ward is back and makes them a much better team today compared to when the Cards played them back in late November.

I would rather see another game against Tennessee instead. I just feel the Cards match up better with the Vols.

No worries though. It's March and this is the best time of the year to be a college basketball fan!!

On Hand for Duke-UNC

Since 93.9 sent me and Deener to Charlotte, we stayed today hoping that if Louisville happened to lose to UNC we'd wind up with this matchup and it has delivered so far. A couple of thoughts:

1. This is an insanely fun game to watch and fun environment. The arena is largely UNC fans but it's loud as hell on every made basket.

2. I could easily see either of these two teams cutting the nets in a couple of weeks.

3. I miss Louisville being in games like these. I really hope that starting next year with the roster upgrades Louisville returns to playing in and winning meaningful postseason games. If it's next year, we'd be 5 years since beating NC State in the Sweet 16 and almost and Final Four out of nowhere.

How do we make the Sweet 16?

First of all as frustrating as the end of the season was from the Duke game on, I think most will agree the regular season exceeded expectations. Chis Mack was a home run hire.

After the game last night I thought about what it might take to get us to the Sweet 16. Here are my thoughts

1) Good Draw - Looks like we are going to be anywhere from a 6 to 8 seed. As Bilas pointed out last night you want to avoid the 8th or 9th seed because you are probably going to get the 1 seed in round 2. A 6 most likely gets you the 3 seed in round 2. And of course with this team we don't want to draw any team that plays a trapping pressure defense.

2) One of my favorite lines from a movie is "A man's got to know his limitations"(Clint Eastwood - Magnum Force) which I have used in posts more than once. I love it because its so true. What kills us in a lot of games is guys trying to do more than they are capable of doing. We have too many guys that think they can penetrate off the dribble to the basket through traffic.. Other than Cunningham, when most of the the rest of the guys try this it results in the dreaded "live ball turnover" which usually ends up in an easy basket at the other end. The biggest offenders are Nwora, McMahon, Sutton and Perry. The flip side is without dribble penetration its hard to create good shots on offense. The key is not to over penetrate. Pass the ball.

3) Good shot selection. The problem with bad shots is not just that you are probably going to miss it. Its that against good teams it usually creates fast break opportunities off long rebounds and from our guys being out of position to get back and defend. I know McMahon & Nwora are good shooters but these 3s that are 5 or 6 feet behind the 3 point line are not good shots unless your wide open. Pass the ball.

4) Sutton has to find his mojo. When Sutton is on we are a completely different team. He showed some signs the last couple of games of maybe getting there. However he has hoisted multiple 3pt shot air balls several games in a row. Looks like he is pressing, trying to force things. DS, see # 2 above. His diminished play has created additional playing time for VJ King who has contributed nicely. But VJ scares the hell out of me. His offense always looks forced and awkward. And he has no jump shot. Has become a pretty good defender though.

5) Have to get more out of the 2 guard spot. Fore is a great defender but for the last 10 games or so when he has been on the floor we have gotten absolutely no offense out of him. That's why I think we have seen more of Perry lately. In my opinion Perry has the physical tools to be a great player. And though its hard to believe I actually think he has regressed mentally from his freshmen year. I think like Sutton, he is pressing. Perry is a guy that is capable of having a huge impact on a game. He shoots the ball well, can get to the rim, and can shut down an opponent defensively. He needs to relax and let the game come to him. Unfortunately Perry can also torpedo a team by say fouling a guy taking a 3 point shot when your 4 points ahead with seconds remaining in the game.

We are a dangerous team. We are capable of beating almost anyone in the Country. Unfortunately I am not sure we are capable of avoiding the mistakes that have sunk us in many close games this year. I think we win our first game, not sure after that. Another thing that I think will work against us is we have not played well in games that are really physical. And the referees tend to let the NCAA Tournament games get more physical than the regular season games.

Mick Cronin - References Louisville and Lack of Respect for AAC

"People underestimated us this year, and I don't think that was really fair to my players or to my program," Cronin told me. "I would say the same for Houston. We've still been disrespected nationally. We've got teams with nine losses that are ranked. I don't understand it." - Mick Cronin

I would assume Mick was referring to two weeks ago Louisville was 18-8 and ranked #18 and Wisconsin was 17-8 and ranked #22 while UC was unranked. The Cards and Badgers had the most losses in the poll (8) and were ranked.

Strippergate - Part Deux

Georgia Tech has been served by the NCAA with a notice of allegations regarding alleged recruiting violations committed by former assistant basketball coach Darryl LaBarrie and Ron Bell, the former friend of coach Josh Pastner. LaBarrie took a prospect on an official visit and a team member to a strip club and facilitated an improper recruiting contact with a person described in the notice as a representative of the school’s athletics interest. It also found that the prospect and team member were provided by $300 cash.

Don't they know that if you host your own strippers in a dorm it's much cheaper?

One and only complaint I have ever had...

I think CDM leaves his pitchers in too long. This has haunted him in the past and today, vs UM, it has hurt us again. Luke, although pitching well today, heads into the 7th inning. One must be aware he is going to start getting tired. Why would you already have someone ready? Now, 3 runs are in with 1 out and finally a change is made. After the first hit, which was absolutely ripped, someone was needed to come in. Give the starter one more batter but that’s it. Hope our guys hit the dang ball and get some more runs.

Seems new regime learned many "valuable" lessons from the old one...

Tail no longer wags the dog with the new department. Interesting that the previous group ever let that happen - particularly since that "tail" had already poked them in the eye twice. Pretty negligent IMO.

Mick Cronin on Grad Transfers

Cincinnati is also one of the few schools that has not taken a fifth-year grad transfer since Cronin's been there. His philosophy on the trend runs counter to most.

"I really hope I never have to, because that means you're really desperate at a position," Cronin said. "And if you do walk down that alley, you bring that fifth-year guy in, he plays and your freshman that you told you loved him, comes in -- he signed early. The other guy, you signed him in May. Now you play the fifth-year guy, the freshman gets pissed off. The fifth-year guy graduates, the freshman transfers. And I'm just going to tell you, it's happened to a lot of guys, and it's a vicious cycle."
