About NIL And Recruiting

People have been saying whoever the new coach is will have 3-4 million in NIL money to use. I know that can get some players here but can UofL finally be able to get some elite talent here or not?

Not even Rick was able to get elite high level talent here consistently and we were permanently locked out with Top 10/20 type players. Will someone who is competent and driven be able to get a couple players like that with NIL you think?

BASKETBALL What I know...

The talks between Heird and Pitino started over the weekend, and a 90-minute zoom call took place last night. Meaning at a minimum, the two sides have talked twice since Sunday. I said in the last update thread that the Richard Pitino buzz was legitimate, and that has obviously been confirmed by everyone throughout the day.

My understanding with Indiana State's Josh Schertz is that hiring him would require a one-time fee of $4M to be paid by UofL if they wanted him in the next 72 hours, due to something he signed. Ultimately who shoulders this blame? I don't know, but I certainly am not paying $4M for a guy with no NCAAT wins.

If you follow me on Twitter/X, you know my feelings about the potential of Richard Pitino. But I will reiterate it here. Is Richard my first choice? No. Does he check every box? No. But, would I take Richard over the other guys who are being mentioned as finalists? F*** yes. He gets this city. He understands this job. He will work his ever loving his ass off. Fit matters, a LOT.

Whether you want to admit or not, NIL has changed everything. A coach's ability to raise funds is a major part of this job. There would be a MAJOR influx of additional resources if Richard is hired.

I have no idea which way Josh Heird is leaning, but if this drags on any longer, I'm going to start to be critical of the way this search has been handled, if I'm not there already.

Anybody still unclear what game we are playing?

Since we whiffed on Dusty May, Josh is polling the fan base on his top remaining candidates.

Seems like the consensus from us is:

Schertz sucks
RPJr sucks
Kelsey sucks

Maybe there will be a few more names leaked to fan base before we’re done … or perhaps Josh has decided that the fan base vitriol toward Kelsey was slightly less than the other two, so he’s finished taking input from the mob….

We shall see!

KHx, this is your time to shine. Get McCollum on the phone and sweet talk him into throwing his name in the ring. 💍 you’ve got your chance, get it done!

BASKETBALL Sunday PM Update

I am told by a very good source that Josh Heird has reached out to a handful of prominent boosters and a former Board of Trustee member to gauge their feelings on Will Wade. The former BOT member told Heird he had no issues with Wade.

Has Heird changed his tune on candidates that have a checkered past after missing on May? I know at one point this was a nonstarter, but this could be signal of a shift in his mindset. Definitely something to monitor.
