A few thoughts on the MBB team

  • We're shooting 28% from three, 269th in the country. If our rotation players shot at the level they did last year (including a career low for Hepburn), we'd be at 36% and 120th in the country.
  • Re three point shooting, Edwards and Waterman are the "problems" as of now. Waterman is 30% on 5 attempts/game; Edwards is 22% on 4.5 attempts/game. Those numbers can/will come up. Smith is shooting like we expected: 38% on 10 attempts/game!
  • Rotations needs to get fixed. Hepburn has never played fewer than 30 minutes/game, and Edwards played that much last year. Both are in the low 20s/game as of now. Those were your two marquee transfers (with Pryor): you need to be playing them high 20s/game (at least).
  • Edwards shot diet looks much different. At JMU he took about 2 threes/game (shot 36%) and 7 twos (shot 49%). So far he's at 4.5 threes and 5 twos. I think we're messing that balance up for him. His strength is his finishing around the rim-we need to be refocusing his game to do that, and then spacing around him with good shooters.
  • Again on Edwards, fixing rotations would help him I think. Guys right now are playing for 3-4 minutes before being subbed out. It's really hard to get any flow going when you do that. Edwards and Hepburn need to be in the game for longer periods.
  • As great as the PK system is, we need to develop it and find ways to get Edwards, Hepburn, and to some extent Johnson going as scorers/creators. Our ceiling as an offense is going to be very low if those guys get single digit points/game as they are now. We don't run almost any high ball screens, even though we've got a perfect set-up for it: multiple good ball handlers, plenty of spacing around them. We need to find sets to get Edwards attacking the basket downhill with movement. This is all the kind of stuff you add over a season, so I'm not panicked that its not in now. But we'll need to do it.

BB RECRUITING: Couple of nuggets to pass along

I feel very good about Louisville’s chances to land Mikel Brown. Close to putting in a pick and going on the record. I think there’s a chance it happens sooner than later.

I also think Louisville is going to add an international prospect to the 2025 class to go with Brown. This prospect is not from Australia, which I’ve seen that out there.

Would put them add a two-man class with a blue chipper that will make an impact right away.

Summary of Saturday: at least it wasn't Virginia

Basically if it weren't a different shade of orange it looked like every time we played Virginia:

1. Chase people through a gauntlet of screens for 28 seconds and lose contact with a three point shooter. Late shot clock threes are big body blows.
2. Look like our offense is composed of Conscientious Objectors to entering the lane and beating the air out of the ball on the perimeter for 25 seconds.
3. Have a big rebounding margin because we had a high volume of misses vs. their high volume of makes.

A clear setback from the sort of fluid passing game we had seen previously, but we clearly needed the upgrade in competition to shine light on weaknesses.
