This UT Martin team lost to Tennessee by 40 points, and there were several periods in our game where UTM exposed our lack of fundamentals and frankly made us look ill-prepared for D1 WCBB. I truly hope that I am wrong, but I saw a lot of areas in our game where we will struggle to win.

Can you expand? I don’t have espn+ so I couldn’t watch. Game never seemed to be in question. Still playing w/o Jada - so that hurts. Lots of youth - so that hurts. I think he has been playing a lot of players as well to see what he actually has. I imagine the rotation will trim down as we progress into the schedule.

Definitely going to be growing pains with 9 freshman on the roster. Jeff will earn his paycheck this year if he can mold this group into an NCAA tourney team.

I agree that this is probably a bubble team at best. We just don't have much of a front court threat scoring, rebounding and defensively. She's a trooper and loyal as it gets, but Cochran simply is not athletic enough to excel in the paint.

Same with Harris who is even slower than Cochran. The two forwards recruited from across the sea are not athletic or reliable shooters. The entire front line is just not good enough.

Cards have the guards though but no Dana Evans or Asia Durr who won games by themselves. I like Berry and Roberts but Arenas hasn't shown much yet. Same with Randolph who I believe will be a special player one day.

I think Walz figured this may be a lean season when he decided to recruit high school instead of transfers. He's building for the future.

It’s true the game was never in doubt, as UTM could not score in the first half, which is when UL got the lead representative of the final score, as the 2nd half was pretty even.

UL’s early trapping defense took UTM out of their offense and explains the first half shooting woes, but it was evident that some wide open perimeter shots simply did not go in for UTM.

Yes, no doubt that having 9 freshmen on the roster can explain some of the 21 turnovers, but it does not explain the clumsy and awkward display that I saw for way too much of the game. I expected some of this incoming class would demonstrate fundamental basketball skill and some athleticism, but I did not see it.

Jeff is so good at improving individual performance as the season rolls on, and I also agree that missing Jada could have a much larger impact on both her individual teammate performances, and the team as a whole; so maybe I am being premature in my pessimism.
