I have a comment/question

Having been a player, coach, student and fan of football, plus a UofL fan for most of my adult life, is it worse to lose a game that you should have won (in my opinion) because of silly coaching mistakes OR to lose a game in a blowout? On a day when your players make a very good effort, the coach (squarely Bobby Petrino) does boneheaded things to literally cost you an opportunity to win a game that your team, and fanbase, desperately needed. Generally, I believe that you get what you earn and that the team that wins is the better team, but not this game. The officials didn’t lose this game with bad calls. The opposition coach didn’t win the game with great coaching. Our kids didn’t lose the game because of a lack of effort, i.e. last week’s UVA game. They lost because their coach is a stubborn and hard headed person. I believe it’s called common sense coaching. I have a friend that is not a football afficianado simply texted a question that I had no answer for, “why is he passing the football?” I didn’t quit being a fan during the CSK days and I won’t quit on these kids either but I will question my continued support for this head coach. Perhaps this lose is on me . . . . And my fellow fans that have diligently supported Bobby Petrino. I’m seriously beginning to believe that support and confidence was erroneously misplaced. I believe it’s time for a very serious conversation betweeen our AD and our head coach. It sure would be if I were the “boss” in a corporation/company when one of my “lead supervisors” screwed up as badly as this guy did yesterday. Yeah, it’s worse to lose like we did yesterday than the way we did to Alabama. I am not going to blame the past administration because I believe they (with our blessing and support) brought this guy to us in good faith. Yep, I’ll be there next Friday night but they lost a bunch of fans yesterday and I do resent that.

Any thoughts on how this weekend’s visits went? Basketball and football prospects? I left after Pass threw the pick, so I didn’t hear the booing.

Does it seem like we are going no where fast with this recruiting class or did we at least gain ground with Weaver?

Did Igiehon enjoy his visit? Committing soon or still looking?

Hmmm - The Athletic - it may be time to pony up a couple bucks a month for this - Jeff Greer joins

This Athletic site, is basically hiring up all the local newspaper journalists (plus other connected people - isn't Eric Wood their Buffalo Bills insider??) and turning them loose to report on their specialty.

Jeff Greer announced that is where he has landed after his 5 years at the Courier Journal. This feels like a pretty wise move on Jeff's part.

Anyway .... here's a link to his announcement ...

I fretted about this column all last week. I wanted to write so many different things in this space that I couldn’t settle on one, and it bothered me.

I wanted to share how I’ve always felt like I was born with basketball in my blood, how my parents delayed going to the hospital when my mom was in labor so she could see the end of Michael Jordan’s 63-point performance in the NBA playoffs. (Our hometown team, the Boston Celtics, won that game, by the way — and swept the series.)

I wanted to share how I learned to shoot a basketball backward as a 2-year-old. Or how my brother and I invented a dice game to simulate college basketball scores and, much to the consternation of the elderly ladies at church, frequently used it to pass the time, even on Sunday mornings. We diced an entire college basketball season during one spring break, then served as the selection committee and put together a 64-team bracket, playing out each game in the driveway.

I wanted to share how that love of watching, playing and studying basketball fuels my passion for writing and trying to explain the why behind what we’re seeing play out on the hardwood.

Then, a few mornings ago, my wife reminded me of another huge aspect of why I love journalism: I love sharing great stories.

I’m bringing all of that — a lifelong passion for the game; a relentless, driving hunger to figure out why things play out the way they do; and a deep love for storytelling — to The Athletic. I’ll be the Louisville basketball writer for The Athletic College Basketball, following the program as it begins a new chapter in its history with a new cast of characters. You won’t see print-deadline fueled game recaps or minutiae reporting here; my goal is to provide a deeper understanding of the team for fans who want more comprehensive coverage.

Let me tell you how I got here.

I played sports just about every day of my childhood. I was obsessed with basketball, even if soccer, my second love, was the best fit for me.

In our driveway and front yard, I dribbled against imaginary defenders and blocked my own shots. I didn’t just do the made-for-television “ohs” and “ahs” of the invisible crowd, and I didn’t just imitate the catchphrases of my favorite sports broadcasters, either. I actually did the play-by-play and color commentary as I played, with commercial breaks and timeouts. I did the same thing playing soccer in the yard, only I used an English accent.

Our neighbors, just like the old ladies at church, were concerned about the boy next door talking to himself, but it made (at least a little) more sense to them when my parents explained that I wanted to be a sports broadcaster. (But OK, looking back on it now, yeah, that was some weird stuff.)

In college, at Pitt, I discovered writing.

I was a voracious reader of the Boston Globe and Providence Journal’s sports sections growing up. But I didn’t see a future in writing until my sophomore year at Pitt when I started at the student newspaper, The Pitt News.

Thirteen years later, I’m still in love with writing and storytelling.

I loved my time at the Louisville Courier-Journal. I made great friends, and I am so proud of the relentless, dogged reporting we did in my five years there. I still very much believe that local newspapers play a major role in the community.

I came to The Athletic to lean into what I love the most about this job — taking time to be thorough and thoughtful; to share stories in a meaningful way; to connect serious Louisville fans with fun and serious in-depth coverage of their team. My work will be presented on an easy-to-navigate, ad-free, video-free, Google survey-free, popup-free app and website.

I hope that sounds appealing to you, and I hope you’ll subscribe to The Athletic and join me as I chronicle this new era of Louisville basketball.

Going Forward - NON COACH RELATED

We have enough coach threads so lets not bring that up in this thread.

Here are my top 3 takeaways from the game:

1) Hall and Tre are the RBs. Hall was very shifty and has a quick burst. Had a fumble and dropped a long pass but overall did a good job rushing the ball against a defense that was packing it in the middle.

2) Our WRs are starting to catch the ball again. They were also beating the fast FSU defenders. That is a very good sign which brings me to ...

3) QB play still needs improvement. Pass had a great 1st half with 3 TDs but bogged down and started overthrowing wide open receivers in the 2nd. Would have loved to see Malik come in as a reliever. Still got to improve there for both. DO NOT USE TRAVIS. This season is a wash so dont burn up his redshirt or risk injury, let him get his practice reps and prep for next year.

Offering 2 Good Lifetime B&W Club Seats for a Friend

A friend has asked me to see if anyone on the board may know of anyone who is interested in purchasing their Lifetime Cardinal Stadium seats.

Their life situation has changed. They still support the Cards.

The seats are in Section 315. Row K. Seats 13 and 14.

They are right on the north ZERO Yard Line.

High up on the West Side (B&W side). Covered Seating.

They are in the first row of seats down from a Suite. I believe Suite #421 seats abut their seats.

They paid $5,000 per seat 20 years ago. The 2 seats come with parking privileges in the Bronze Lot.

This is not a "fire sale".

If there is any interest, please contact me on their behalf at 502-298-7308.

I refuse to panic

I am like most of you. I am not happy with our football record. I really like most of what I saw Saturday against Virginia by the defense and special teams. We had a young corner that did not react well to his assignment but I am sure that that can be repaired in time one way or another.

Everything gets down to the offense. Coach has accepted all of the responsibility for their lack of performance, both players and coaches. The assistant coaches and the players must accept their responsibility for their lack of performances as well.

The offensive line gave, for the most part, adequate time for our quarterbacks to successfully complete their assignments, whether passing or handing the ball off. Running the ball in our offense is predicated on the ability of our offense to be successful in passing the ball. Currently, defenses have stacked the box to stop the run, unafraid of our ability to have much success throwing.

Do any of you believe that our receivers lack skills necessary to be successful? Lots of speed, experience, and talent.

Do you believe that our head coach, nationally known for his offensive skills for his offense and play calling, has forgotten how to develop effective and potent passing teams? Not a chance.

It all gets down to our quarterback play. Both have shown their lack of experience in running the offense, under pressure. They have a tendency to hold the ball too long. They seem to not be able to lead their receivers and wait too long for them to come open. It is quiet different throwing in practice against our defense and throwing in a game under pressure. They just do not seem to see the entire field as they make their decisions.

There seems to be an "elephant" in the room that will have to be addressed. I thing that Coach Bobby knows this better than any of us. He will find a way to solve it soon. I have every confidence in him. Like I said at the beginning, I refuse to panic.
