FB RECRUITING: Tuesday night Louisville football/recruiting update

Who could imagine that there was so much recruiting information AFTER Petrino got fired? I had a hard time imagining it but here we are. I have a few things that I wanted to keep you all updated on so I figured I would throw it all in a post and give it to you as a little pre-Thanksgiving appetizer.

As a note, some of the stuff you see myself and Dave post about might appear to overlap on the surface but there are many times where we may have a a slightly different angle/different source and that only provides you more information in the end. In case you missed it, here is Dave's post from yesterday you'll definitely want to check out: https://louisville.forums.rivals.com/threads/massive-premium-recruiting-update.42213/. In this post here I'll touch on a couple of the subjects he talked about in that post.

- First and foremost, I spoke to a source tonight who not only confirmed that recruiting was going well for Louisville despite having an interim head coach, but that there is likely at least one silent commit. This is largely a testament to guys like Pete Nochta, Richard Owens, and Vince Tyra and continuing to recruit through the adversity. Who is the silent commit? Well, from what I've gathered I'd venture to say that 3-star LB Jamie Pettway is the guy.

- Another prospect that visited Louisville this past weekend was big Canadian offensive lineman Liam Dick. I spoke with a source regarding his recruitment who told me that they believe Louisville will commit to Louisville 'very soon'.

- Talking with a source close to the recruitment of 3-star TE and current commit Sam Snyder, I feel fairly confident in saying I think he will sign with Louisville before it's all said and done. Like Dave reported, Snyder has an official visit set up to Baylor on December 1st and they are definitely a school to watch. I did get word that the December 15th visit to Louisville did get solidified so that is a positive. Baylor's coaches are expected to be in for an in-home visit next week as well as Louisville's coaches. For Louisville, Kolby Smith will be making the in-home visit and I'm even hearing that Vince Tyra MAY be on that in-home visit as well, although I don't think that is set in stone at this time. Another quick note, Vince Tyra has been in constant communication with most/all current commitments. Talk about an AD going above and beyond.

- I'm really interested in seeing how this recruiting class finishes out. I've repeatedly heard that it is a small class with some of the latest numbers being in the 12-15 scholarship range. I'm not sure how things are going to shake out and I wouldn't be surprised if there was some movement of committed guys before it is all said and done. Especially with the coaching change and a new group of assistant coaches coming in there will be evaluations done, needs addressed etc. Plus, all it takes is the right assistant coach(es) to unlock some very highly sought after but currently unavailable recruits...

One particular position of need that I'm going to be interested to see how they address is quarterback. Speaking to one source in particular, they weren't very confident going forward in either scholarship QB currently on campus and even in Jordan Travis. Could a grad transfer or JUCO QB be a possibility? I think the option has to be kept open. With offensive line and tight end being positions of dire need will they have to find a way to make room for another QB in the class? I know the first inclination is to recruit defense and I'm confident that will be done, but from those I've talked to, they think the defense has plenty of talent and playmakers and just need a mentality makeover.

Myself...not “100% Sold” on Brohm...

Pretty much stayed away from Message Boards but just my 2 Cents...

1. Finally the University has cleaned itself up with Ramsey, Jurich, Pitino and Petrino GONE...only Grissom need to leave the BOT and it will be really really done.
2. I would be fine with Brohm but there are other candidates that I like as much if not more...specifically Ryan Day @ Ohio State and Luke Fickell @ Cincinnati.

But I trust AD Vince Tyra and will roll with whoever we get...the only candidate I don’t want is Neil Brown...he is a good coach but he would be a terrible fit here...and would split the fan base

what is status of fb players transferring ?

The statements that at least 12 players have submitted papers

Why??

Did not want to play for the HC anymore?

Coaches/coach relationships, not playing, poor planning,
Afraid the HC would be fired and they wanted to play for him?

Finally how can AD convince them to stay if the did not like the fact their coach was treated
New coach be sufficient ?

The new beginning did not last long less than one half of the NC state game

See what kind of salesmen is the AD

Ryan Day

If Jeff Brohm does not work out, consider Ryan Day. He is a fine offensive mind. Currently the offensive coordinator at Ohio State and before that QB coach for the 49ers.
He might be hard to get because he is the heir apparent to Urban Meyer...and was interim head coach when Meyer was suspended. He is 39 years old. The downside is that he is not familiar with recruiting in the south...but the Midwest is a strong recruiting area.

Signees.........................

Loved the detail that CCM provided yesterday. I am elated with the class, progress, and the obvious determination/perseverance the coaching staff is already displaying. Says a lot they can meet with these parents and sell our program in the midst of everything that has transpired. As I've already stated, we are easily 2-3 years ahead of where most thought!

A little (but VERY interesting) coaching search tidbit

We all know that Jeff Brohm is far and away the frontrunner for the Louisville football head coaching job for next year, but I was relayed some information today regarding someone wanting to put their name into the mix for the Louisville head coaching job.

Apparently former Louisville assistant coach and current Seattle Seahawks defensive line/assistant head coach Clint Hurtt is very interested in the job according to one source. I'm not sure if anything will really come of it or not but I figured it was at least interesting enough to pass along.

The Biggest Louisville FB Coaching Turnaround Challenge Ever

I looked through all the records. For Louisville to become even marginally competitive and credible again, it will take a miraculous turnaround from 2018 to 2019, like only one that has occurred in all of Cardinal Football History.

The comparison is to the 1997 to 1998 turnaround, which in retrospect was simply astounding.

Ron Cooper's Cards had just gotten worse and worse as the 1997 season wore on. There were very few who even attended the last ever home game in Fairgrounds Stadium that season against East Carolina. 12,850 was the announced attendance. I was there. I remember the game well.

The season had started off poorly at 1-4 against a pretty tough schedule of what today are all Power 5 teams: @ Kentucky, Utah, Illinois, #1 Penn State, @ Oklahoma. The season's lone win came during that run against a very poor Illinois team by the score of 26-14. After that it was all downhill. A total of 8 losses in a row to finish the season.

The 11-game combined score of Cooper's offensively-challenged Cards was 245 - 407, for an average score of 22-37. An average two touchdown beat-down every game. The Cards gave up 50 points or more only twice - 57 points to #1 Penn State and 64 points to Tulane.

Louisville played zero FCS opponents that season. And their final season record was 1-10.

The next season was John L. Smith's first. Energetic, Smiling. Yelling. Defense-Minded and ST-Minded. A players' coach who demanded energy and performance. He went 7-5. An incredible 6-game turnaround!

The 1998 Cards played 4 Power 5 level teams: Kentucky, @ Utah, @ Illinois and Boston College. They beat Illinois and BC handily. The Cards scored more than 60 points 3 times: against Cincinnati, Western Kentucky and East Carolina. They allowed more than 50 points twice: 68 vs Kentucky in the PJCS Stadium Opener and 56 @ Southern Miss.

The combined score in the 7-5 season was: 473-435. For an average score of 39 - 36.

John L's OC was Bobby Petrino. Chris Redman was his QB. Ibn Green, Arnold Jackson and Frank Moreau and Michael Josiah were on the team. Just to name a few.

It was quite a turnaround. It took an exciting Offense and an energetic motivated Defense. And the Defense still gave up a ton of points.

Louisville is going to need a massive turnaround of "John L proportions" after the ongoing 2018 debacle. There has never been a Louisville team that has allowed this many points. 473 points in 11 games! Allowing 43 points per game! There has never been a Louisville team that has been outscored by as many points! 22 points per game on average!

But even with a spectacular bounceback turnaround, I think setting expectations any higher than 5-7 in 2019 is foolhardy. I think this turnaround from the Depths of Hell is going to take at least two or three seasons.

Twelve games will be enough

I have attended every home game this year and never left early. I attended one road game so I have seen enough football to know that this team has too many problems to succeed. I eagerly await the naming of our new coach and his staff. It will be the first positive event of this football year.

The crowd this past Saturday was a good or better than any crowd that we had this year. They tried to back the players and stayed with them until they could no longer stand what was going on in front of them. The smaller coaching staff tried to do what they thought was best, but this team is beyond coaching for now.

It is hard to tell what our real problem is. We are too young to compete at this level and too undisciplined to consistently execute when we do some things well for a time only to lose focus on what needs to be done. Two five year penalties on the same lineman and then a holding penalty when a player makes a good run into the end zone for an apparent touchdown that causes it to be taken away.

Like I stated, twelve game will be enough this year.

Team meeting . . . . .

This team needs a players only team meeting TODAY. Not tomorrow, but TODAY. Somebody needs to find out what the problems are that these kids have WITH ONE ANOTHER. They need to pull together instead of snipping at each other walking off the field after yet another humiliating defeat. find out why kids are not playing up to their potential and why they’ve quit on one another. If there are players that just don’t, or won’t, care about their teammates or the team as a whole then they need to be gone ASAP. But irregardless they need to come together NOW. There are talented players on this team and they need to find out why they aren’t playing up to their potential.

GO CARDS - BEAT EVERYBODY!!! God Bless America!!!

Jim Ramsey and Tom Jurich-can't we move on

In my discussion with the state auditor that did the audit on the foundation he stated that they found no illegal activity by Dr. Ramsey financially. Don't forget there were very successful people from this community on the foundation board overseeing the expenditures. I have talked to at least two of those people and they said Jim Ramsey did nothing wrong. What Dr. Ramsey did was give and receive ill-conceived bonuses to his secretary and others. It was money he raised and was told to use it any way he wanted to. He and the board used very poor judgement in distributing money entrusted to them although they felt they had the freedom to do so. There have been at least three highly-respected people from this community including Vince Tyra that have been in charge of the foundation since Ramsey left. None of them have suggested that Dr. Ramsey did anything illegal just ill-advised which I agree with. The lawsuit against Dr. Ramsey is frivolous and just another example of the heavy-handedness of David Grissom. The attacks and demeaning of Jim Ramsey and Tom Jurich in this community are very disheartening to me and disappointing. Did they make mistakes-yes. Do they deserve to be vilified like dishonest scoundrels-no.

In 5 days..

No more: Neck brace pics, motorcycle jokes, Matt Colburn's revenge, Wakeyleaks, defensive coordinator revolving door, it will all be officially over.

I just pray whoever our next coach is can be a dynamic energetic personality that will get us to a place we really have only had in fleeting glimpses. A power 5 team that wins 8 - 10 games a year and plays a good brand of football. I can't wait for the new era to begin

FB RECRUITING: 4-star OL will 'definitely' take an official visit to Louisville

Despite Louisville's struggles, the Cardinals are still finding away to do some work on the recruiting trail. One of the biggest examples of this is 4-star offensive lineman Danielson Ike. Ike told me that he is in the process of trying to set up an official visit to Louisville and noted the Cardinals will 'definitely' get one of his 5 OV's.

He didn't seem too concerned about Petrino's firing or the struggles Louisville has had. He did mention that he thought Jeff Brohm "would be the perfect fit for Louisville" and that he knew a little of Brohm from being offered by Brohm at Purdue.

WOW! Best not get injured while playing at Purdue. LINK.

Among Bobby Speight’s claims were that Purdue did not have X-ray capabilities at Ross-Ade Stadium, that there was no police escort for the van taking his son to the student health center, and that Speight, in uniform and pain, was stopped and asked for his insurance before being treated.
