FB RECRUITING: Quick update on 3-star Georgia athlete

Jamel Starks told me he received a call from Bryan Brown and Scott Satterfield trying to get the 3-star prospect up on a visit soon. While he doesn't have one officially scheduled at this time he said that he might visit on January 26th. Along with Louisville, Starks told me he had also heard from NC State and Nebraska today.

Georgia Recruiting may have gotten easier ... Cortney Braswell to be Def Qual Control Asst

https://www.timesfreepress.com/news...hqEmdS9eg_pgX4h4Q3HCUTegpbTqmec0_qJHgiBg2IdQE

When Cortney Braswell took over as the head football coach at Ridgeland High School, he knew it would take an incredible opportunity to make him want to leave. That opportunity has come much sooner than Braswell could have imagined.

Just one year after taking over his hometown program, Braswell has resigned at Ridgeland to join the new staff at the University of Louisville, where he will be a defensive quality control assistant.

"This is the most surreal thing that's ever happened to me," the 31-year-old coach said. "This kind of thing just doesn't happen to people like me. For me, this is literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I can't think of another coach from our area who has had the chance to leave high school and go coach for a Power Five program.

"They could have hired anybody in the country and they chose me. That's so humbling. It's an unbelievable dream come true, and I'm so appreciative of it."

In his only season at Ridgeland, Braswell guided the team to an 8-4 finish and the second round of Georgia's Class AAAA playoffs.

Prior to that, he was the head coach at Central for two seasons, leading the Purple Pounders to the state playoffs each year after taking over a program that had gone 0-10 the season before he arrived. He compiled an 18-17 overall record in three seasons as a head coach. He also has worked as an assistant at Bradley Central, North Murray, East Ridge, Soddy-Daisy and Ringgold.

"I've been a journeyman most of my career, and each time I would arrive at a better place for myself," Braswell said. "I feel like I've done the best job I could at every stop, and there was nothing I wasn't willing to do as a high school coach to have the opportunity to better myself.

"I never thought I would've had the chance to coach at Ridgeland. When I got that job I wasn't looking to go anywhere else, but this offer came through the relationships I've developed with the staff that's now at Louisville. It's a unique situation at Ridgeland because I have family members on the team playing for me. That part is hard because you're not just saying goodbye to kids you care about but family as well. I do feel like we are leaving the program better than we found it."

Braswell will be joining the staff of newly hired Louisville head coach Scott Satterfield and will work closely with inside linebackers coach Dale Jones, the former Bradley Central and Tennessee Volunteers star who had worked at Appalachian State since 2006 and recently was hired to Satterfield's defensive staff.

Braswell developed a relationship with those coaches when they worked at Appalachian State, having taken his teams to the Boone, North Carolina, campus for preseason camps every year that he's been a head coach.

"We developed a great relationship with those guys and I became really good friends with Dale, which has meant the world to have him as a mentor. He's been so important in my development.

"I've never been a vacation guy. I don't go to the beach or take days off. I can't tell you how many times I would get a call from Dale saying he had some free time to talk ball, so I would hop in the car and drive four hours to Boone just to talk to him for a couple of hours about ideas and then drive back home. Any free time I got, I was always looking to become a better coach."

As a player, Braswell was a two-time all-state player and 2004 Mr. Football finalist at Baylor, and he was a member of the Times Free Press Dynamite Dozen for his senior season. By the end of his Red Raiders career he held the school record for single-game rushing yards and was the program's career rushing and scoring leader as well. He went on to play at Liberty University.

In a news release, Ridgeland High School stated, "The Walker County Board of Education, Superintendent Damon Raines, and Ridgeland's administrative team are grateful for Coach Braswell's service to the Panther Nation and are excited about his opportunities to pursue his passion for football at the next level."

School administrators have given current Panthers assistant head coach Kip Klein the responsibility of overseeing all football operations as the search for a new head coach begins.

** Chris Mack - Updates **

With any loss we have to learn from it - it has been problematic all year, but as we play teams that are more familiar with us. ... your deficiencies get exposed. We have to be better on the defensive end.

We turned the ball over too much.

I don't think there has been a point where we felt our defense is good enough to beat elite teams. We need to do a better job of keeping guys in front of us. ... more than anything we need to keep guys out of the lane.

FB RECRUITING: New offensive targets for the 2019 class

This list is not exhaustive but it's what I have to go on at the moment including my projections of the numbers at each position:

Quarterback (1, grad transfer)

Login to view embedded media SMU's all time leading passer is set to take an official visit to Louisville this weekend. If he signs he will be the heavy favorite to start next year, a valuable incentive at the staff's disposal.

Offensive line (3-4)

Login to view embedded media Murray was going to sign early but his parents wanted him to meet Satterfield and the new staff before entering into a binding contract. He was spotted at a Louisville basketball game with Satterfield over Christmas break.

Login to view embedded media Remember Tim Anderson? I have been told that he is still a priority for Louisville and he is still interested in them as well. The JUCO prospect will have

Jones has emerged as one of the most sought after remaining 2019 lineman targets in the nation. Lately Louisville, Texas, Florida, Auburn, Penn State, Florida State, and Oregon have all extended offers. The problem for the 'Cards is that he only has two official visits remaining but the positive is that they are closer to Indianapolis than any of those bigger schools listed above. If Louisville gets him on campus for an official fans should get excited.

Login to view embedded media Brown recently dropped his top five of FIU, Louisville, Kentucky, Nebraska, and UVA. He has scheduled an official visit to Louisville on January 12th, per Chris Person.

Tight End (2)
Login to view embedded media Seither has been in high demand lately receiving in home visits from TCU, Michigan State, Pitt, Syracuse, and Maryland before the early signing period then picking up new offers from Miami, Louisville and most recently Georgia Tech. the 6-foot-5 Florida-based propsect couold play a pivotal role in Louisville's depleted tight end core as a true freshman.

Login to view embedded media Brandon Jordan has already taken an official visit to Louisville but didn't pull the trigger. He may want to be featured more as a receiver than a tight end so that could be problematic and there were also academic concerns but I was told Louisville is optimistic he will be in the class.

Login to view embedded media Randolph is a bit of a long shot, many think he is deciding between LSU and Ole Miss but his is definitely high on Louisville's board.

FB RECRUITING: Thursday night recruiting insider

We are hours away from the dead period coming to the end and the full contact period beginning. Here are some little bits of info surrounding Louisville recruiting as the phone lines get ready to light up with coaches calling kids at midnight.

- I followed up with someone, just for fun, about the Tate Martell situation. Needless to say I was told there was "zero chance" he would come to Louisville. No surprise there.

- 4-star DE and FSU commit Quashon Fuller announced on Twitter that he was visiting Louisville this weekend after cancelling a visit to Florida. I checked with someone on the FSU side of things and was told that the belief is that "As long as FSU wants him...he will likely end up there." They did go on to say that there was some uncertainty on whether FSU will continue to push (recruit) him so that is at least something to watch.

- Brandon Jordan, a 6'6" 230lbs TE prospect, has been a target of Louisville for a little while now. I recently followed up with Jordan who stated that Louisville was "definitely" the frontrunner to sign with in February, but that he was going to see what the next few weeks have in store as far as if any other schools pursue him.

- NJ TE prospect Tyler Devera has been in contact with Louisville and is expecting a phone call from Louisville TE coach Stu Holt after midnight. As of now he doesn't have a visit to Louisville planned and no official offer but definitely one to watch.

- Speaking of TE prospects, one name just to remember for later on is Chris Hopkins. Hopkins stated that several of Louisville's coaches have followed him and invited him to camps this spring/summer as he said the staff wanted to get a closer look at him. He is a member of the class of 2019 so I'm not sure if he would be a late addition to the class or walk-on but regardless there is at least some interest with the coaches contacting him.

- Georgia 3-star LB Allen Smith told me that he has an official visit scheduled to Louisville next weekend. From what I have been told, Smith is one to keep an eye on, although he doesn't claim any favorites at this time.

- I know there was some mention of Louisville being involved with the recruitment of OL Dawand Jones but I reached out to Jones who stated Louisville had not been in contact with him.

- Steven Linton was a DE that Petrino's staff was very high on and he told me that Louisville's new staff has stayed in contact with him so he is another prospect to watch.

- Another LB target that I'm told Louisville is in pretty good shape with is Drew Fowler of Bellevue, WA. Fowler just recently earned an offer from Louisville's new staff and said that he is going to set up a visit to Louisville soon.

FB RECRUITING: New defensive targets for 2019 class

This list is not exhaustive but it's what I have to go on at the moment including my projections of the numbers at each position:

Defensive line (Two)

In a pleasantly surprising development 4-star FSU DE commit Quashon Fuller canceled his official visit to Florida and will head up to Louisville this weekend to enjoy the blizzard. DL coach Mark Ivey gets the props for getting the Rivals250 prospect on campus.

Parker is a long edge rusher from Dallas who recently decommitted from Texas Tech shortly after Kliff Kingsbury was fired. He hasn't been officially offered by Louisville at the moment but he is on the radar. It appears that many believe he will end up at TCU but if he sees an opportunity to start as a freshman at Louisville the 'Cards will have a chance.

Linton has already visited Louisville and it appears the new staff has evaluated him and reestablished contact but no official visit has been scheduled as of today.

Linebackers (Two)

The three star Georgia prospect has official visits set for Miami on 1/18 and Louisville on 1/25.

This late blooming two star has received heavy attention from Miami and Nebraska lately. Louisville offered yesterday so watch for an announcement regarding an official visit.

TJ Holl is a grad transfer linebacker from Colgate. He has an offer from Louisville, Marshall, and Tulane in addition to a plethora of FCS programs like North Dakota State (Carson Wentz's alma mater), EKU, and the Citadel.

Defensive Backs (Two, one corner, one safety)

Starks will take an official visit to Louisville before signing day.

Louisville and Colorado are fighting for his final official visit and he has set up officials with Iowa State and North Carolina. Many believe Nebraska leads.

Louisville offered yesterday. He has already taken an unofficial visit to Tennessee and Chad Simmons reported that he has plans to take officials to Colorado, Oregon, Tennessee, and USC. It appears UNC and Louisville will duke it out for his final official visit.

FB RECRUITING: Ja'Darien Boykin film

I generally post kids' Hudl videos so you all can check it out and at least watch a few seconds to get an idea of what type of prospect they are, but I had to single out Boykin's film. Boykin is one of Louisville's top targets on the defensive side of the ball and for good reason. I've watched his film a few times and am absolutely blown away by it so I had to post it here for you all to see. At 6'1" 238lbs he doesn't possess ideal size which is likely why he hasn't been more highly coveted on the recruiting trail, but this kid can flat out BALL.

There are several things that really stand out about him but to me the burst and acceleration are his best characteristics. Check it out and you will see why one Louisville source told me Boykin is a must get.

Tee Martin Question

Since Tee is obviously holding out in hopes of getting an OC job, do we really want him at this point? Obviously, he would be an asset to Louisville in recruiting, but you have presume he will definitely be gone after next year since he won't commit holding out for a better gig right now. Since we already have some heavy hitters on the recruiting trail, do you bring in a recruiter to develop relationships with players all through the summer and fall, to only have that coach leave in December for another school and potentially poach those players to his new school at right before the early signing period?

I understand the argument that you don't plan for a coach leaving, but do we need another recruiter now that we have the staff we have, or do we move on to a less high-profile WR coach that may be better getting the players to improve on the field and stick around for a few years?
