Cardinal Football Still Relevant

Was glad to see that the ND @ Louisville football game made the top 25 nonconference matchups for next season.

13. Notre Dame at Louisville (Sept. 2)
The Labor Day opener for Scott Satterfield offers a chance to get the Cardinals off to a big start against Notre Dame. The Cardinals won the teams' only other meeting in a 31-28 thriller in South Bend in 2014.

Recruiting Difference

Maybe it's just me, but it seems this coaching staff is all over social media, the graphics guy is working overtime, and I'm following recruiting trips on Twitter by assistant I didn't even know existed. Seems like night and day difference from the last staff. Keep it up boys! May not pay huge dividends this year with everyone fighting over the leftovers from early signing day and the graduate transfer portalies, but I think the effort will pay off next year and beyond.

Renato Brown commits to Louisville

Scott Satterfield has begun to add to the Louisville football program's recruiting class, picking up a commitment from defensive tackle Renato Brown on Sunday night.

Brown, who announced via Twitter, is a three-star prospect from Palm Beach Central High School in South Florida. He checks a number of the Louisville coaching staff's boxes: He's a big body on the interior of either the offensive or defensive line, and he's from South Florida, for instance.

Some sites list Brown as an offensive guard, while some list him as a defensive tackle. He ranks as the No. 36 guard in 247sports.com's 2019 composite rankings, though he told The Sun-Sentinel last August that he'd prefer to play defense in college.

Brown committed to Miami in September of 2017 and reversed that commitment last May. He pledged to Louisville after an official visit this weekend. He also had offers from Alabama, Florida, Kentucky and Georgia.

Already, the Cardinals' new staff is making an impact: Brown's primary recruiter according to 247sports.com is Cort Dennison, who recently rejoined Louisville as co-defensive coordinator and is a successful recruiter.

Brown would be the sixth member of Louisville's 2019 class, and the third brought in by Satterfield and his staff. The new coaches have three more recruiting weekends before they must finalize their class on Feb. 6, national signing day.

Tonite's game is the one we need to win...

...Last nite's would have been nice. But the men's team is not where the image of athletics is now. It's the women's team. #1 vs #2 and the opportunity to be ranked #1 for the first time in history.

BTW, since it's a current topic, attendance for U of L women's basketball is up 40% this year compared to last year at this same point. So much for the national trend/wifi/HDTV arguments...

FB RECRUITING: Tate Martell

As reported by Steve Wiltfong, Tate Martell is considering transferring to one of three schools, WVU, Miami, or Louisville. What wasn’t in that initial report was when he planned to visit Louisville.

Per a source close to the situation, I was informed he plans to visit Floyd Street this Wednesday and Thursday.

cardinalsports.com will have more on this story as it develops.

FB RECRUITING: Barring something unexpected...

Renato Brown will be committing to Louisville soon. People on the Louisville side of things are very confident.

Grad transfer QB Ben Hicks will not be committing to Louisville. He was at Arkansas yesterday on an official visit so it appears he left Louisville early to make it down to Fayetteville to take in the Razorbacks’ hoop game yesterday. I expect the Razorbacks to be his pick, in large part because Arkansas head coach Chad Morris was his coach at SMU.

Quashon Fuller seemed to enjoy his visit but I don’t think he was swayed enough to flip to Louisville. He may flip from FSU but it’s unlikely he lands here.

Mack and Roy

When I saw Roy Williams wobbling and nearly falling down on the sideline in the 2nd half it made us me think how fortunate UofL is to have found such a good coach at a young age. UNC, Duke, Syracuse and several other top schools are all nearing a point of having to replace a legend. I’m really glad UofL has made this transition. From what I’ve seen thus far of Chris Mack makes me feel really good about this next chapter.

FB RECRUITING: Sunday recruiting update

I just reported that Tate Martell will visit Louisville Wednesday and Thursday. So will three-star Colquit County, GA three-star offensive guard Kamaar Bell.

The visit will be an official and the ‘Cards are hoping to stop the moment that Auburn is enjoying right now:

In other 2019 offensive gaurd from Georgia news, I’ve been informed that confidence is shaky on the Louisville side of things regarding Ty Murray.

I’m hearing that North Carolina has made a major surge for him and former Louisville assistant coach Lonnie Galloway is the culprit behind this caper. At this point I don’t expect Murray in the class.

Things aren’t all doom and gloom however as 2019 Grayson HS, a Georgia powerhouse, OLB Allen Smith is set to take an official visit to Louisville this weekend.

Smith was offered by Oregon, Penn State, UCF, Nebraska, and Maryland this year so he’s been a sought after prospect this cycle.

I’ll keep the board update as more information is obtained.

FB RECRUITING: Quick Saturday night visitor update

I know Dave dropped an update by not too long ago but I wanted to chime in with what I am hearing as well. The more info the better, right?

- I'm hearing Louisville feels good about the chances with both Renato Brown and Ben Hicks.

- There has been some uncertainty about which side of the ball Brown would play on and I'm told he would play OL for Louisville.

- While the source I spoke to felt good about their chances with Hicks, they are worried about how the trip to Arkansas might influence his decision. The staff really likes Hicks, though so they are hopeful they can get him.

- I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news because I know there is some optimism floating around regarding Quashon Fuller, BUT... From what I've heard I wouldn't get my hopes up too much.

Interesting....How the CFP Money is Distributed

Report: Mountain West edges out AAC in overall CFP rankings to earn $20.4 million payday
By Bryan Fischer

The AAC has made a big deal about being the sixth Power conference in college football but perhaps they forgot about taking care of business on the field to remain atop the Group of Five. Because after the 2018 season, there’s an old, familiar face atop the rankings.

That would be the Mountain West who, according to Stadium’s Brett McMurphy, edged out the AAC as the top Group of Five conference in the computer rankings to earn a little extra payday from the College Football Playoff:

Mountain West finished w/highest computer rankings this year among Group of 5 conferences, earning $20.4 million from @CFBPlayoff. AAC was next ($18.8M), then Sun Belt ($17.2M), C-USA ($15.6M) & MAC ($14M) sources told @WatchStadium. #Power7?

For those trying to get a grasp on what all this means, the College Football Playoff system distributes revenue to all of the conferences in the FBS (and a smaller amount to FBS independents and even the FCS). This base amount varies by league and can get bumped up depending on whether a league makes the semifinals or one of the New Year’s Six bowl games and a few other factors. The Group of Five splits a base amount too, which as McMurphy alludes to is done depending on a certain number of (and this is a BCS flashback) computer rankings.

In the 2018 season — likely thanks to the overall strength of teams like Fresno State, Boise State, Utah State and others — the Mountain West edged out the American ever so slightly to earn the highest payday. This is despite the AAC getting the Group of Five bid to the New Year’s Six, which was UCF’s appearance in the Fiesta Bowl against LSU.

FB RECRUITING: What I’m hearing about the official visitors

I’m hearing that Renato Brown is having a very good time and has been very receptive to Louisville’s new staff. I would put him on commit watch. That being said, he is expected to visit UK before the February signing period so if he does commit that would be a big win over the ‘Cats. If he doesn’t commit this weekend, it’s not because the visit didn’t go well and Louisville has done everything they can with this weekend.

Ben Hicks seems to be having a good visit confidence isn’t as strong with him as it is with Brown but things are going well.

With Quashon Fuller, he has had a good time and he’s been pretty pumped to see the snow being that he’s a S. Florida kid. There is still some time left for his visit but at this point I don’t expect him to be making any decisions this weekend.

OT -- totally off topic, but some local boys did well last night on Jimmy Fallon

Any Love Jones fans on the board??

These guys were all the rage 25 years ago. A lounge-y type style, their first album has songs about the Ohio River, going to the Drive-In, partying on Central Avenue during Derby season ... basically, about growing up in Louisville.

They were publicizing a re-release of their debut album this summer, and scheduled a show for a club tonight in New York City ... and long time fan Jimmy Fallon heard about it, and invited them on the Tonight Show last night. I'm sorta buds with Ben Daughtrey, the co-lead singer and bongo player, and he told me lots of random stories about their time out in LA chasing the dream. Like David Schwimmer (better known as Ross on Friends) would have them over to go swimming on the regular.

Anyway ... if you are in the New York City area, Love Jones is playing one of the 3 shows a year they play, at the Cutting Room. Google for more info.

Here's an "extra" from last night's Tonight Show:
