FOOTBALL Spring practice begins today

Jeff Brohm’s second year gets underway, TODAY as Louisville hits the practice fields for spring ball.

Instead of doing an insider notes post after every single practice, I’m going to wait until we compile a decent sample size.

So, look for the first edition of spring practice tidbits this weekend. If there’s anything specific you want to know, drop it in here and I will do my best to get you an answer.

Reminder, again: I will not be doing a practice recap every day. I will wait until a handful of practices get completed before taking to the boards.

What I am paying attention to:

- How does the QB depth chart shake out?

- With a much deeper OL group, who emerges?

- Behind Lacy and Brooks, which WRs can be relied on?

- Who steps up alongside TJ Quinn at ILB?

Colton Hartman

Freshman Colton Hartman gets first start of his career against the Knights today
as Williams searches for the next guy up. Time to see what we got with this youngster.

With the Thursday-Saturday series @ Wake on the horizon, look for a change in the weekend rotation. If Williams moves somebody ahead to that Thursday game instead of going with Gongora,I think Koger could see his first start of the season Thursday in what is quickly becoming the biggest series in a few years round these parts.

Bobby Knight story, possibly involving Dusty May

I went to an IU practice, followed by a coaching clinic in the mid 90s. Cannot remember exact year.

IU practiced for 2 hours, then Coach Knight lectured after that.

About 15 managers were sitting, lined up in chairs as he talked. The players left.

He said to the student managers, "you guys get a ball and get out there. I want you to demonstrate something for me"

They all sat, frozen in terror, and 1 of them finally said "Coach, we put all the balls up."

He said "Well GD it, go get one. Who told you to put the GD balls up?"

While they scampered to get a ball he said to the audience-

"That's why we have 15 GD managers. I kill 1 per week." lolol

I just realized today, Dusty may have been one of the student managers. Lol

In no way would I EVER want us to have a coach that acted like Knight.

But I guarantee you he learned a hell of a lot if he was with him every day.

Coach could talk about zone offense for an hour, with no notes.

It is a shame terrible behavior tarnishes so much what a basketball mind he had.

5 years since we experienced a selection Sunday

2019 was the last time we got to see our location on Selection Sunday. I feel like we’ve gotten numb to this feeling. 2015 was the last time we got past the first weekend. I fear that if we don’t change things soon, we’re going to lose the younger generation and it’ll be hard to get people back on board. March Madness is what this sport is about and we’re not in it, look at the last 9 years.

2016 we self imposed
2017 we lost in the R32
2018 we went to the NIT
2019 we lost first round
2020 March was canceled
2021 we missed the tournament
2022 we missed the tournament
2023 we went 4-28
2024 we all know

If you all want to know why this hire is huge, we can’t afford to fail. We take a risk and it’s a bad hire, then we could be looking back and saying we haven’t had a 2nd weekend in 15 years before you know it.

Bracket reactions

- all #5 seeds are setup for an upset with strong #12 seeds
- I don’t see McNeese getting past Gonzaga, but if they do…
- No way FAU gets past UConn, but if they do, I’m sold on May
- UAB as hot as anyone, matched up against last year’s National Runner Up
- Charleston hosed with a #13. Will they Upset Alabama or fall on their face again this year?
- #10 Nevada will probably beat #7 Dayton. Anthony Grant is a good coach, but sucks in March.
- LBSU could possibly upset #2 Arizona
- #12 JMU versus #5 Wisconsin. What a contrast in styles. Who is going to win the pace game?
- Where does Purdue choke, or do they actually make a deep run this time?
