Saturday defensively

Defensively I won't be surprised if we don't see a whole bunch of four safeties; Quinn out, Watts slid inside and Tamarion McDonald slid down to the Bandit with Griffin and Hutchinson at the safeties. Reason being the two principle dynamics at work Saturday are: 1. keeping Ward in the pocket while not sacrificing pressure, and 2. maximizing coverage on Restrepo. Basically Restrepo is a hyper version of Brohm's ideal slot that we all envisioned we had with Caullen Lacy though Lacy seems to be more of an all-purpose guy. Restrepo is to Miami what Edelman was to Tom Brady and Cooper Kupp was with Stafford and the Rams. He is used on short crossing and rub routes as much as any receiver in the ACC and it's high percentage given Ward's accuracy. On 3rd down he's virtually automatic.

...oddly enough, I think we're better situated to defend Miami than we have been with Ga Tech, SMU, Notre Dame and UVa. With the polite exception of Notre Dame where Riley Leonard was limited to 52 yards on 13 carries and Notre Dame only ran for 117 yards, the leading rushers in every game--including Jacksonville State--have been the QBs. Ward doesn't run in the framework of the Miami running game; he does it to buy time or to take advantage of man-to-man coverage. Louisville has done very well defending RBs. In that light our greatest chore is not having the breakdowns for big plays out of the safeties that dogged us in every one of those games. Those mistakes in abundance against Miami and we're going to be the Spotlight Dance in Heisman highlights at the Downtown Athletic Club for Ward.

1st game November 4

Our first game will be November 4th in Paris in Oui, City of Lights Tournament. Louisville is ranked 17th in the preseason and they will play UCLA who is ranked #5 preseason. Lucky girls and staff going to Paris to start your season. I bet that didn’t hurt us on the recruiting trail. This incoming recruiting class was ranked 6th in the country by ESPN. The game will be televised nationally live on ESPN2 at 2:30 eastern time.

FOOTBALL FB Press Conference Week 8

(Opening statement)

“An opponent in our stadium that is ranked #6 in the country undefeated and playing very well right now. It is going to be a great test for us and I know we are going to have a lot of guys fired up to get to work this week and try to improve and get better and see if we can figure out a way to go out there and get a win.”

(How different is Miami this year)
They have got a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate and he [Cam Ward] is really good. He can throw it, he can move, he can buy time, he has got a great feel for the position, he can get it to their playmakers and he makes that offense go. When you combine that with the great talent on their team at all positions; very good receivers, good running back core, good offensive line, and their defense is a good solid defense with really talented players in a lot of positions. You know in order to win you need to be good in all three segments but definitely offense and defense tie together and they have a legitimate possible first round draft pick at quarterback to go along with a very talented roster. “

(On the key to slowing down Cam Ward)
Well, I think if you watch him [Cam Ward] he is very poised, he understands football and he has got a great feel. I think he throws it best when he is on the move and when he can buy time and that is when the big plays are created because he is just so natural at doing it. So, we have to contain him in the pocket and make him throw from the pocket. We have to guard as well as we can and pocket rush and make sure we push that towards him and not allow him to escape and buy a lot of extra time because he is very dangerous when he does that.”

(On improvements in the Virginia game)

“Well, we did have some new pieces on the offensive line, I thought for the most part they played hard. There were a couple of time we got exposed and we found a way to overcome it. We had a couple of key drops and a lot of good plays; we have to continue to show up and perfect as we can. I think on defense we got better and at some things we need to get better at, still ways to go. We got better and continue to push the envelope and get it sharp and crisp as we can. We have to make sure that we are making the offense beat us one on one and we are not having miscommunication or misalignments or people thinking one thing and playing something else. Everything has to be on the same page, we have to continue to get that sharp as we can.”

(On Ashton Gillotte against Virginia)

This is the most he played. I know he played 60 to 70 snaps on defense. He plays hard. He gives great effort. He has a good motor. He gives great push. He made some plays. If we can ever get a lead and make the offense do things they don’t want to, that’s when we’ll find a way to make more plays on that side of the ball. I think he’s done a great job of doing his part. We just have to continue to work hard at it. We have to be really good around him. We need to cover as well as we can to allow those guys a little extra time to get in there to get those sacks and those tackles-for-loss. Then we need to continue to keep our rush lanes as much as we can and not rush past the quarterback. We need to be conscious of what the quarterback is doing. Is he stepping up? Is he trying to escape outside as we’re trying to get to him?

(How defensive communication changed against Virginia)

“We worked hard all last week, specifically on having an answer for everything that could come up. Getting the call in quick is important as well as getting it communicated to the right people as fast as we can is important. Timing is critical. Being on the sideline and having a feel of if this team is huddling on the line of scrimmage, are they going to snap the ball, and trying to get things in as quick as we can. It’s also about your ability to adjust when you see those things and to feel those things on the field was better than being upstairs. I think having a general pulse of the defense on what they need to hear and what emotions need to be displayed is better by being on the field. I thought that was beneficial but there’s still some things that we need to get better at but for the most part I feel like we’re moving in the right direction. We will be tested this week in all aspects of the game, but we have to work hard this week and improve.”

(What playing for the Schnellenberger trophy means)

“I think everyone knows that coach Schnellenberger played a great role in my career and played a great role in building this program and we’re all thankful for that. Him and Beverlee are huge Louisville supporters and Beverlee still texts me every now and then and we keep in touch. Coach knew how to build a championship team. He knew how to overcome adversity and how to hang in there when things got tough, and he never gave in. He never displayed a lack of hope. There was always positivity in his voice, and he knew he could get it done. He proved it at every level. That doesn’t mean it always went smooth, but he hung in there and displayed confidence throughout the team and the city that it was going to get done. That’s what you’ll learn from him a lot of great lessons. He was at both programs and did a great job, he took Miami to unprecedented heights too, so I know they’re grateful for what he as well. This will be a great game and a measuring stick for us on where we’re at. I like the fact that we played last week, and we found ways to get better and found some key areas that we need to continue to work hard and get better at. We will be playing a great team this week and see how exactly we stack up and what more we need to do to improve.”

(On Isaac Brown and his development)

“Issac has done a great job for us, from day one. He has not missed a rep of practice, he goes hard, he competes, he does everything we ask, he is very unselfish. But, he is a true freshman, so you do not want to overload him. We gave him a lot of carries this past game. Obviously, he displayed his talent and playmaking ability, but he was getting beat up and could not finish the game. You have got to make sure you are aware of how much someone can handle and have got to make sure that all personnel at every position are able to go and able to contribute. You have got to be very calculated in making sure that it is not all out for one game and not conscious of making sure we keep guys as healthy as we can. With that said, he needs to touch the ball a lot, we need to utilize his skills, and we need to make sure that that happens as much as we can get it to happen.”

(On Jamari Johnson and tight ends)

“Well [Jamari Johnson] has a lot of potential and a lot of talent. We like what he has done. Those positions are very important to us as we analyze ways to get them the ball. We have been better when we design ways to get them open than when they have had to get open on their own with a normal play. That is just the fact. We have got to be conscious that we continue to find more ways to have some misdirection and play action to allow them some space to get open instead of allowing defenders to get their hands on them in some drop-back pass situations. So that is all planning that we have to do. The catches they had last week were designed to kind of help get them open; it did and they did a really good job, so we have got to continue to build on that and make sure the tight ends get their touches.”

Week 7 ACC PIC UM Bragging rights go to.....

TPA CardsFan with 7 of 7. Congrats! Bragging rights go to him, with his tiebreaker score of 24-17 right on the nose. Three others also pic'd 7 of 7 but not the exact score.

Congrats to all of them for the perfect pics minus the tiebreaker score. All did an awesome job. Brag away TPA, you deserve the bragging rights this week. To the others....that tiebreaker score is a bitch.

A sincere TY to all of the participants and better fortune in week 8. It will be harder this week to replicate TPA's perfect record.

My choker award goes to the Cal this week....gotta make those FG's to win. Shoulda, coulda, beat the Panthers but blew it.

Runner up is UVA. Had it and let it slip away to the Cards late, late in the 4th Qtr. Great rally by the Cards though. Tough game to lose Cavs.

Biggest surprise score to me was GT @ UNC. Heels are really bad and reeling. Bye Bye Mack Brown...You got to go for the leagues sake!

Breakdown:

7 pf 7 - TPA, Hayden Harris, ajg, and Wahoo (great job this week by you)

6 of 7 - BooneCoCd, Push Up, Louis III. RhinoByars, Koeterback12, LeFors4Ever, KnuckleHank

5 pf 7 - Cocoa, sccard, CardFirst, cardrock, G-man, and mayo (bringing up the rear this week)

Biggest almost upset was Cal over Pitt at Pitt. But missed FG at the end thwarted that bid.

Best games were Cal @ Pitt, Cards @ UVA and Cuse @ NC State. All hard fought close games till the end. ACC is competitive if nothing else this year. Is Miami and Clemson that much better than all the rest?

This was a good week for everyone but TPA was great. Good fortune with this weeks games fellows. Just keep grinnin and pic'n andpic'n and grinn, and take those tiebreaker scores seriously.

FOOTBALL *** Live Game Thread: Louisville at Virginia ***

Here is the game week press conference transcript:

Head Coach Jeff Brohm Press Conference
Louisville, Ky. | L&N Stadium
October 7, 2024

(Opening statement)
“We have to get back to work. We’re facing a good team in Virginia whose 4-1 and 2-0 in the
conference. They have good quarterback play and they’re solid on defense and balanced on
offense. Last year at home we had to score two late touchdowns to pull out a victory. They
controlled the game for the most part. We must get better as a team and improve on a lot of
things that haven’t gone our way. We need to go out there and get it done especially on the road,
which will be a good test for us.

(On his biggest priority right now)
“On defense we need to shore some things up and allow our players to play and execute and play
fast. There are some things that we’ve discussed, and we’re making corrections and make a
better plan to make sure those things happen. We have to make sure everyone is getting the call
so we can play fast. On offense, we have to continue to find ways to make big plays. When we’re
in some passing situations we have to find ways to protect better and be firmer so we can give
the quarterback some time. We have to be consistent playmakers and find ways to convert in
critical situations, third and short, fourth and short, and be smart in how we create a plan and find
ways to get it done.”

(UVA’s ability to finish in the fourth quarter)
“it’s all relative. We were able to finish on them last year, despite them playing a really good
game. This year they’re an experienced team whose quarterback is playing well, they settled on
him and he’s done a really good job. He can run and pass which gives them options and uses his
ability to escape the pocket, giving them opportunities to score. Their defense is solid and at
times they’ve played tremendously well. I think they’re a solid football team that’s gone through
a couple seasons where they’ve had some tough losses but have learned from them. They have
improved because of it and that’s how it works. They’re very competitive, they play hard and are
well coached. The quarterback play as well as their defense is their strength.”

(On what he wants improved on defensive communications)
“The simplest way to define it is that when the balls snapped, we need to be lined up and on the
same page about the call. If we get beat, let’s get beat because the other team outplayed us. That
has not taken place. There needs to be less checks, or in my opinion, zero checks, so when a call
is made, we can run it. Everyone needs to understand the play so certain things can’t detour us
from making the play. I do think that the calls need to get in quicker. We need a plan to make
sure that happens. Worst case scenario, if a team goes extremely fast and the calls not getting in,
we have a set play where we’re lined up to play until we get the call. There are some small things
with we’re going to make sure gets fixed and we’ll work hard this week to fix them, so our guys
can execute and play fast.”

(On getting behind early)
“It’s a combination of a lot of things but as a defense, we do need to communicate. Just like
when you’re playing defense in basketball, you have to talk. It’s going to be loud, so we have to

be better at communicating. I do think it’s a hodgepodge of things that happen here and there,
that need to be cleaned up to make sure we don’t put ourselves in those situations. We all need to
play better. We all need to coach better. It starts with me and goes all the way down. The plan
needs to be defined, and we need to know exactly what we’re going to do. We need to be able to
teach that plan and carry it out as efficiently as we can. To win at a high level, everyone has to do
their part or you’re not going to win. That means our assistant coaches, players, reserves, have to
step up and perform at an optimal level in order to win and we got to be better at that.”

(In helmet communication on the road)

“Well, we did have a couple of situations late in the game when it got loud. We still need to use
the signal system; we need to make sure that we are able to do both. We need to be aware of
when it does gets loud, do we change from one to the other, a little bit quicker then maybe we
did in the past game. That is all on the table and being discussed and trying to map out, ahead of
the game so when that does happen, we don’t miss a play here or two there because of
communication. So, the communication in all three segments have to be spot on, so that our
players can go play and execute, so as coaches we have to be really good at it.”

(On Ashton Gillotte’s numbers being limited)

“Well, there is a combination of a lot of things with that, I think Ashton has played hard, just
because he hasn’t got sacks, he’s gotten pushed, he’s gotten close to the quarter back, he’s gotten
in hurries, and he’s gotten in pressures, and he just hasn’t landed as much. So, it’s a combination
of a lot of things, we got to make sure we put him in the best position, we have to make sure the
people around him are in the spots they are supposed to be, we have to make sure that we’re
using his strengthens much as possible. We got to make sure we’re not only speed rushing but
bull rushing and using his strengthen to knock people back. We have to be aggressive in our calls
to make sure we overload their protection at times and not let them double team him. So, it’s a
combination of all that, I do think he has played hard and has been efficient, he been productive
for us, we just have to get him more assistant to help him dominate the way he knows he can.”

(On Isaac Brown’s usage)
“We are very conscious of that as well, I think Issac is a true freshman, so we have tried not to
throw to much at him at first, he has shown the capabilities, he plays hard, he doesn’t miss
practice, he has no fear. He makes catches, he make hard catches, he makes plays that normal
freshmen wouldn’t at time. So yes, he has been very productive for us, we need to make sure he
gets plenty of touches, we still need all the other running backs to perform well and do their job.
The more playmakers you have the better your team will be, but yes we are conscious that he is a
guy that need to get his touches.”

(On missed tackles and handling running QBs)
“We’re going to work hard on tackling this week. There’s a lot that goes into that. Getting lined
up, getting set, identifying what’s going on and having a couple seconds to digest and then go
execute. It’s also about taking the proper angles and using all of our body to see what we’re
tackling and wrap-up. As far as containing the quarterback, we’ve had a couple calls in blitz zero
and the quarterback has gotten out and ran for a big gain. With that said, everyone playing the call is most important. Secondly, be conscious on those situations to not be too aggressive and allow what could be a five-yard run, turn into 50 yards. We’ve had a couple times where in our blitz zero, a couple of guys have only picked up parts of the blitz instead of doing their job. That
means if we can’t execute the play well, we need to pull back. The quarterback running for big
gains is unacceptable and we need to be better at that.”

Injury Report Before Virginia Game

For Louisville, they have a trio of impactful injuries heading into the Virginia game

Starting left tackle Monroe Mills suffered what appeared to be a knee injury in the SMU game, with head coach Jeff Brohm saying it will "knock him out" for a while. However, Brohm does anticipate him to return at some undisclosed point in time.

As for star corner Quincy Riley, he's still questionable to return from his foot injury, with Brohm mentioning it will be "when he feels healthy enough to play." Starting defensive tackle Dezmond Tell had to miss the SMU game with a "lower extremity injury," with Brohm calling him "doubtful" to play against the Cavaliers.

Week 7 PIC UM for bragging rights.. still time to get pics in folks! ...

Six teams have a bye week. FSU finally won't lose a game this week but bye is pretty tough!

BC - bye

Cal
@ Pitt - If Cal comes to play and seeks revenge for the Cane debacle Pitt may go down. Upset pic of the week for me.

CU @ WF - Fake Worrest can not pull back to back upsets and the Tigers have found their eye

Duke - bye

FSU - bye - can they hold on and not lose this one too?

GT @ UNC - Toss up game of the week but the Wreck keep on wrecking other teams season and Heels are bad

Cards @ UVA - Cards seem to struggle vs Cavs...last time I went there for the game the Cavs took Cards down... sad repeat of this

Miami - bye - refs get a well deserved vacation and save the flags

*Cuse @ NC St - Tiebreaker...another toss up game....but Cuses confidence is high and offense is too much for the Pack - 34-24

SMU - bye

Stfd @ ND - an I don't care game here but ND needs to win to stay in the PO hunt and they will easily in a blow out....have too

VT - bye

Fun game to watch for me is the battle of the SEC titan teams Vandy and the Mildcats. Will it be an upset if'n Vandy wins 2 weeks in a row??? What say you for this bonus game? I take the Commodores in this one. Just a feeling, ask Bama fans.

Vandy @ UK
