Fall Ball

Okay, so the newest edition of Cardinal baseball started in earnest yesterday with everyone reporting to practice at Patterson. Time for a renewed vigor to get back where we belong-among the elite programs in the country.

This group looks to be flying way under the radar, which imo helps unify the players to work together to get there. There are lots of returning pieces to build from as Mac and Co. look to build a competitive and complete squad. Of course, there are questions too but let's wait and see how the transfers,Freshmen and RS Freshmen are able to contribute to the cause.

Looking forward to seeing what we've got with pitching and infield, two huge question marks. Can't wait for these scrimmage to start in a few weeks.

Ron English

Bend but don't break was the name of the game. Of Virginia's 11 drives, just two of them ended in touchdowns. Of the Cavaliers' three red zone trips, just one of them ended in a touchdown. Brohm says that having English directly on the field played a massive role in the defense's efficiency.

"I think Coach English being on the field and have this sense of: 'Is this team going fast? Are they huddling? Are they at the line of scrimmage?' Just kind of feeling it. But at the same time, getting the pulse of our defense and football team I think was going to be beneficial, and it was.

"I thought the defense, other than a couple things here and there, played better. We were ready for most of the plays when they were snapped, and we did a much better job."

Week 8 ACC PIC UM challenge, for bragging Rights....

Good fortune this week fellow pic'rs. Shooting for perfection TPA style. Be aware of the early week day games!

BC @ VT (Thur) - Hokies get to cooking and smoke the Eagles all night long

FSU @ Duke (Fri) - My 'who cares game'...hope FSU pulls the upset to help us in the standings...but hope is slim for Dukie home game

Canes @ Cards - I am pic'ing the Canes so that the Cards win...silly I know but whatever I can do for the cause...worked last week at UVA

WF @ UConn - Hard to beat convicts especially in their back yard...Fake Worrest gets robbed and falls again

*ND @ GT - (TIEBREAKER) - Could be the game of the week...Domers have to win this one for CFB PO chances, lose and u out...27-23

NC St @ Cal - Battle of the losers break out game..one of them has to win...go for the home team Bears as they maul the Wolf Pack

SMU
@ Stanford - Hoping for an upset...does this Cardinal have it in them? No, Mustangs run all over them In Palo Alto

UVA @ Clemson - Rooting for the Cavs to pull the upset...but Tigers are playing to win the ACC title this year, Dabo ain't messing around

UNC, Pitt, and Cuse all have a bye.

UK @ UF. - Bonus Game. Can Cats bounce back from Vandy? I think not...Gators chomp on them again and cats tuck tail all way back to Lexington. Who'd a thunk it?

What Manny thinks

I listened to a podcast featuring Manny Navarro and they were breaking down the Louisville vs Miami game. They expect Miami to win by 10 to 14 points mainly because we don’t have a productive offense. They pointed out that we have several good playmakers on offense Shough, Brooks and Brown but not much else about the offense is productive. Unfortunately I have to agree with them up to this point not much else is impressive about our offense.

19 Days

Until we officially tip off the Pat Kelsey era in the KFC Yum Center against Morehead State at 7pm November 4th.

I’ve been a little lax on this countdown … missed numbers 24 and 25 last week.

Aboubacar Traore will wear #25 for us this year.

Chucky Hepburn will wear #24:

And the very awesome news is that we’ve got an exhibition game against Young Harris next Monday, October 21st at 7pm. Definitely love this time of year with basketball starting up and football in full swing.

MBB Expectations

The Preseason AP Poll released today and doesn't have us in it. Most other polls will likely follow suit. Plus, most advanced metrics have us outside the top 50 in the country.

Feels like local expectations are higher on the team than that, but I'm curious if I'm wrong. So maybe this thread is a good place for everyone to drop their expectations for the team this year. I'll start: I expect we finish somewhere between third and fifth in the ACC (but a few games back from Duke/UNC), make the tourney as a 6-9 seed, and win a game.

Saturday defensively

Defensively I won't be surprised if we don't see a whole bunch of four safeties; Quinn out, Watts slid inside and Tamarion McDonald slid down to the Bandit with Griffin and Hutchinson at the safeties. Reason being the two principle dynamics at work Saturday are: 1. keeping Ward in the pocket while not sacrificing pressure, and 2. maximizing coverage on Restrepo. Basically Restrepo is a hyper version of Brohm's ideal slot that we all envisioned we had with Caullen Lacy though Lacy seems to be more of an all-purpose guy. Restrepo is to Miami what Edelman was to Tom Brady and Cooper Kupp was with Stafford and the Rams. He is used on short crossing and rub routes as much as any receiver in the ACC and it's high percentage given Ward's accuracy. On 3rd down he's virtually automatic.

...oddly enough, I think we're better situated to defend Miami than we have been with Ga Tech, SMU, Notre Dame and UVa. With the polite exception of Notre Dame where Riley Leonard was limited to 52 yards on 13 carries and Notre Dame only ran for 117 yards, the leading rushers in every game--including Jacksonville State--have been the QBs. Ward doesn't run in the framework of the Miami running game; he does it to buy time or to take advantage of man-to-man coverage. Louisville has done very well defending RBs. In that light our greatest chore is not having the breakdowns for big plays out of the safeties that dogged us in every one of those games. Those mistakes in abundance against Miami and we're going to be the Spotlight Dance in Heisman highlights at the Downtown Athletic Club for Ward.

1st game November 4

Our first game will be November 4th in Paris in Oui, City of Lights Tournament. Louisville is ranked 17th in the preseason and they will play UCLA who is ranked #5 preseason. Lucky girls and staff going to Paris to start your season. I bet that didn’t hurt us on the recruiting trail. This incoming recruiting class was ranked 6th in the country by ESPN. The game will be televised nationally live on ESPN2 at 2:30 eastern time.
