BREAKING: Johnathan Greenard is in the transfer portal

I broke the news on December, 3rd that Johnathan Greenard intended to transfer and that Florida was the most logical destination.

Well Mark Ennis just reported on his 93.9 ESPN Louisville show, The Drive, that Greenard has entered his name in the transfer portal. This means that he has decided to move on as a grad transfer.

Greenard’s departure will open another scholarship spot for the 2019 recruiting class, brining the total number to 16.

Donovan Mitchell

Even though the Jazz beat the Warriors last night, Mitchell struggled mightily. He was 5 for 26 shooting and had 6 turnovers.

He's not been as good as last season. Utah is relying too much on him and its leading to a lot of bad shots. He needs a star big man for a teammate. Someone like Anthony Davis who can take the pressure off of Mitchell.

He was so good as a rookie but I thought last season that Utah was not in his best interest overall. The minutes were available but I was concerned about what's happening this season might occur.

Malik Williams

Sky is the limit with this guy. With two more years of refining his skills, he will be a lottery pick. No one plays harder than him and he has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt he can learn and improve.

Last year he looked kind of skiddish and appeared to be a single minded kind of player. Shoot the 3 was his game. That was the only thing he seemed confident to do. This year, he's rebounding, blocking shots and driving to the goal. And he's all out on the court.

If he improves his handle and becomes a more consistent 3 point shooter, the sky is indeed the limit.

Interesting Comments from Bryan Brown yesterday

Before he hit the recruiting trail Brown looked at some video from last years games.

Couple of his comments:

I was impressed by the speed , size and talent I saw

I mean no disrespect but several players were utilized out of position

Music to my ears since most of these guys will be back. Hope he knows what he is talking about.

Cautiously optimistic

Timing is everything; in college football I think the clock on the "silly season" has been fundamentally changed with:

1. The advent of the four game redshirt window.
2. The early Signing Period
3. The gulf between the value of playing in the Playoff series vs. a bowl for a potential pro prospect.

...each of those December realities really puts "pressure on the blinds" for you poker players out there. If you don't have a stable coaching situation or even a stable season in general--you are REALLY screwed. The kids bailed on Miami. The kids have bled off a little with Florida State. Our situation obviously had a direct impact on Kentucky and Purdue. The reality is that college football programs that enjoy a big conference network--The Big Ten Network most obviously, the SEC Network not too far behind--either bolster the salaries of coveted staffs, or payoff staffs to leave while still enjoying enough profitability that they can bring in and pay another coveted staff. Compare and contrast that to the four ACC schools that were perceived to struggle on Signing Day--Miami, FSU, UNC and us.

So this December has ended up as disastrously as could have occurred for us to an extent when it comes to a recruiting haul; but there is reason for optimism and I think that comes a year from now. I think Satterfield is assembling a quality staff made out in his image to field a product type; Brown as a defensive coordinator comes with some chops, and he's young. Getting Ledford from a direct Atlantic Division nemesis is a big net plus for us. We have three spots left to land, and depending on who you listen to those three might end up being the highlights of the staff. For a year they can sell immediate playing time in a conference that affords a player a bunch of opportunity against quality opponents. The yields won't be this December; but I'd caution there are going to be some MAJOR job openings a year from now...and we'll be in a position to take advantage with the type of staff I think we are assembling. Staffs that were perceived as stable were MAJOR benefactors in this cycle.

Poster boy for the Porky Stupes regime ineligibile...

Out of control - unsportsmanlike conduct penalty machine jordan jones is ineligible for the yuts bowl vs. PSU. Not that it would have changed the beatdown the yuts are going to absorb. Too bad - I was looking forward to him getting pancaked by a PSU lineman. Guess he’ll have to cheap shot someone in the stands.

L1C4 Swimming domination

Don't know if you've been paying attention but two Cardinal swimmers are putting on a show in international events. At the recent SC World Championships in Hangzhou, China former Card Kelsi Worrell Dahlia and senior Mallory Comerford won a total of 11 medals nine of which were gold.
Team USA’s Kelsi Dahlia leaves Hangzhou with 9 medals total, 7 of which are gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. Dahlia, American’s top female butterflyer, won the gold in the 100m butterfly (55.01), captured silver and the American Record in the 200m fly (2:01.73), and bronze in the 50 fly (24.97).
Teammate Mallory Comerford was a part of both gold medal relays at the FINA Short Course World Championships.
In the 4x50 freestyle, the first event of the final session, Madison Kennedy led off with a split of 24.05 for the United States. Mallory Comerford had the fastest split of the field in 23.28 on the second leg. Kelsi Worrell Dahlia's third leg split of23.37 passed the leading Netherlands and anchor Erika Brown brought home the gold for the U.S. with a split of 23.33.
Kelsi Dahlia dominated the 100 fly, just missing the World Record by less than .5 of a second to win gold in 55.01 for Team USA.

No worry, "Vince" is on this...

Football Attendance

In some respects, the football program NEXT year will be where the basketball program is THIS year. Last year, we struggled thru a basketball season with an interim coach and a promise of better things this year. Attendance was down last year in an arena with plenty of unneeded capacity, but we hired a new basketball coach.

Football struggled this past season under what turned out to be a lame duck coach. Actual attendance was pretty awful in an expanded stadium--as Eric Crawford discusses--but here comes Scott Satterfield!

As Crawford points out, however, attendance hasn't bounced back in basketball after a year of purgatory. It's down 17% THIS year after last year's decline. (Odd that other people besides me pay attention to that stuff.)

So why is "Vince" so optimistic about next football season?...

** Quick Hits - National Signing Day Part 1 **

- Meeting all the assistant coaches today. First impressions? These coaches are genuine, straight-forward, no nonsense and ON MESSAGE. They were all saying the same things about the future of the program and the culture they intend to create. I was impressed.

- My favorite note of the day? CoachFrankPonce said he's a HUGE Teddy Bridgewater fan. He said one of the first things he did when he got on UofL's campus was FaceTime with Teddy and Scott Satterfield. Said Teddy was hyped that Ponce was in Louisville now.

- I told UofL that every Louisville staff needs at least one assistant coach who doesn't need to ask for directions in Miami. I told Frank Ponce that today and he laughed. "I definitely know all of south Florida, I coached there for many years. ... It's my home."

ON TO THE SIGNEES... all four of them...

New Louisville coach Scott Satterfield has announced the signing of four new recruits on the first National Signing Day.

Satterfield flipped two new recruits on Signing Day and signed two more longtime commitments to scholarship paperwork Wednesday.

First, the flips:

- Quarterback Evan Conley was committed to Appalachian State for months, but when Satterfield and QB coach Frank Ponce moved to Louisville, Conley made the move with them. Conley, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound star at Kell High in Marietta, Ga., was the Georgia 7-A Offensive Player of the Year and named to GSWA All-State as a junior. After leading Kell to a 9-3 season this season, he visited Louisville last weekend and chose Louisville Wednesday morning.

- Conley's coach will be on 790 KRD tomorrow morning at 8 am. http://www.790krd.com/listen

- The Cardinals also landed a former Indiana commitment when Plantation linebacker Dorian Jones flipped to Louisville on Signing Day. The 6-foot, 235-pound linebacker was the No. 36 inside linebacker in the nation according to Rivals.com and was the Sun Sentinel Broward County Class 5A-1A Defensive Player of the Year. He averaged 11.1 tackles per game, notching 122 total tackles his senior year. He picked Louisville over offers from Indiana, Kansas State, FIU, Buffalo, South Florida, and Florida A&M.

- DC Bryan Brown was stoked about flipping Jones, and said he had been a target of theirs for a little while, but they didn't think they could get him at App. Said he's a smart player who always knocks ballcarriers backward. He's a "downhill thumper" which is a phrase I will now use on a regular basis.

- Satterfield kept two longtime commitments in local star running back Aidan Robbins and West Virginia lineman Zach Williamson. No Ty Murray... yet.

- Robbins is a 6-foot-3, 225-pound athlete who is rated three-stars by Rivals.com and the No. 14 overall recruit in Kentucky for 2019. He tore his labrum in his shoulder after just 72 carries his senior season, but he rushed for 319 yards and four touchdowns before the injury. Robbins got a late push from BYU and Kentucky, but chose to stay home over offers from Kentucky, Purdue, Ole Miss, Missouri, and South Carolina.

- At 6-foot-6 and 298-pounds, Williamson has the physical stature to be an effective lineman at the ACC level. The No. 87 offensive tackle by Rivals.com, Williamson was a 2018 AAA All-State selection by West Virginia Sports Writers Association as a senior and AAA All-State honorable mention as a junior. He picked Louisville over offers from Kentucky, Penn State, West Virginia, Vanderbilt, Marshall, Wake Forest, Duke and Pittsburgh.

- I asked Satterfield if he found the local High School coaches to be receptive or if he felt like there was some repair work that needed to be done? His response was great. "Hey, we just got here." It's not our fault. He said everybody understands: the coaches, the prospects, etc... He said everybody was excited to have the new UofL coach in their schools. Said he was welcomed with open arms.

- Loved what I heard from Dwayne Ledford today about what he wants to build at Louisville.

- If you missed our interview this morning on 790 KRD, check it out here.

D1 College Football

Nick Sabin visited a number one recruiting target of Nebraska and they sent all eleven coaches to the kid's house. I thought for a moment and asked this question. Is it good for college football programs like Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, and others to annually load up with all the 5 star kids and a good percentage of the 4 star kids every year?
An underdog like A-state may get lucky but talent wise will never be able to compete. I root against Alabama every time because they are perennially number one every year for this reason. Load up the stars.
I think something radical should be done to create some parity in college football along with expanding the number of teams in the playoff. Here we go.

1. limit the number of 5 star kid's teams in the top 10 rankings can sign. Cap the number at say 50 with a limit of 5.
2. 5 stars kids can go anywhere they want provided the team they select isn't at their limit.
3. 4 star kid's are caped at 15.
4. 3 star and below can be any number up the to the allotment of open scholarships available.

I believe over time Nick will have to work to keep trophys flowing into the sports complex. Okay guy's keep an open mind but the underlying premise here is to bring some parity and excitement to college football. Watching the New England Tide every year roll over teams is boring.
