*** WBB POST SEASON THREAD ***

Louisville survived Clemson in OT last night in its post-season opener. Play Duke tonight at 7:30 on the ACCN in the quarterfinals.

RECAP:

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The No. 6 seed Louisville Cardinals (21-9, 13-5 ACC) won a thriller in overtime, 70-68, over No. 14 seed Clemson (14-17, 6-12 ACC) Thursday night in the second round of the 2025 Ally ACC Women's Basketball Tournament at First Horizon Coliseum. Missing two players and trailing by as much as seven in the second half, the Cardinals fought back to come away with the win. With the victory, the Cardinals advanced to the quarterfinals for the 11th-straight ACC Tournament, the only program in the lead to make the quarters in each of the last 11 years.

The Cardinals were led by Ja'Leah Williams and Tajianna Roberts, who scored a team-high 16 points each. Williams set a career high with a team-best 12 rebounds for her second double-double of her career. Roberts tied a career high with 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Mackenly Randolph set a career high with 11 points and Cochran joined her in double figures with 10 of her own.

The Cards started the game strong on the defensive end and did not allow Clemson to score until it was over four minutes into the game. Over that time, the Cards went on a 7-0 run. Clemson put together a run of their own as the Cardinals offense slowed down. At the end of the first quarter, Clemson held a 13-11 lead.

Clemson got the lead as high as five in the second quarter until the Cards fought back. Louisville ripped off a 12-2 run to regain the lead and an Izela Arenas fast-break lay-up forced Clemson to call a timeout. Williams scored six points in the second quarter and she was 3-for-3 from the floor. At the end of the quarter, Louisville took a 30-29 lead into the break.

The Cardinals struggled from the floor in the third quarter, only hitting four of their 12 shots. Louisville picked up five points at the free throw line but trailed 47-43 heading in the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals got the lead back after a Randolph layup with just under seven minutes remaining. Clemson jumped back in front as we hit the media timeout with 5:07 left. The Cardinals responded out of the timeout with back-to-back baskets by Williams and Roberts to regain the lead back. Over the final three minutes, the score ended up tied three separate times and it led to overtime following a Clemson three in the final seconds.

In overtime, Roberts took over as she scored seven of her 17 points and had seven of the Cardinals 10 in the extra frame. Randolph put the Cards back up for good with two free throws with 38 seconds left in overtime.

The tournament continues for the Cardinals as they will be back in action tomorrow night for the quarterfinal round. The Cards will square off with No. 3 seed Duke in the final quarterfinal of the day in Greensboro. The Cardinals and Blue Devils will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET and it will be broadcast on the ACC Network.

CARDINAL NOTES

  • After Terrence Edwards Jr. scored a career high 35 points on Wednesday night against Cal, Louisville became the only DI program this season to have four different players log at least one 30-point game. It’s also the first time in Louisville’s 111-year history that the team has four players with a 30-point game.
  • Louisville has improved from eight wins in 2023-24 to 24 wins in 2024-25, the largest turnaround in program history, improving by 16 wins.
  • For the first time in the 111 years of program history, Louisville has earned five road wins with a margin of victory of 20 points or more: at Virginia (20), at Syracuse (24), at SMU (25), at Boston College (26) and at NC State (25).
  • Starting point guard Chucky Hepburn was named to the Naismith Trophy Men’s Player of the Year Midseason Team. He earned his second ACC Player of the Week award on Monday.
  • Pat Kelsey’s Cardinals are one of the most improved teams in the country from the end of 2023-24 to now, accounting for the NET and number of wins. He was named to the Naismith Men’s College Coach of the Year Watch List on Feb. 21.
  • As of March 7, Reyne Smith is third in the country in 3’s per game (3.53) and fourth in total 3-pointers (106) - he’s 17 made 3’s away from breaking Louisville’s made 3-pointers in a single season record.
  • As of March 7, Chucky Hepburn is 24th in the country in assists per game (5.9) and 25th in total assists (172). He’s also 13th in total steals (69) and 10th steals per game (2.38).
  • Sophomore forward James Scott is second in the country in dunks as of March 7 with 68 makes on the year, according to Bart Torvik. He leads the ACC in that category and is third on Louisville’s dunks in a single season list.
  • Three of Louisville’s six losses have all come to teams now ranked in the AP Top 25: No. 2 Duke (27-3), No. 4 Tennessee (24-6) and No. 19 Kentucky (20-10). As of March 4, those teams, plus RV Ole Miss (21-9), are a combined 92-28.

  • At SMU on Jan. 21, Chucky Hepburn broke the UofL single game assists record with 16. Reyne Smith broke the program’s single game made 3’s record with 10. Louisville became the only DI team this century to have a player with 10+ 3’s and 15+ assists in the same game. The Last NBA team to do it was the Warriors with Klay Thompson (10 3PM) and Steph Curry (15 AST) on Nov. 20, 2022.

UT Rick Barnes

Kelsey's contract lasts five years, starting on Mar. 28, 2024 and ending on Mar. 15, 2029, with his base salary being $2.3 million per year. If he reaches the NCAA Tournament in any of his first three years, he will receive a one-year extension at his base rate.

I would have to imagine something is done here after the season. He isn't in the top 40 of salaries. If we want to be back, then we need to take care of coach. I know its only one year, but GOTTA do it!

UT Rick Barnes

It wouldn't make any sense that I can think of that PK would leave Louisville for Tennessee or anyone for that matter. I guess if enough money was put in his face but that ain't going to happen yet.

If any big name program needs a top head coach, they should go after Rick Pitino. No way he would stay at St. Johns over a bigger program. Regardless of what anyone thinks about him, he gets the job done no matter where he's at. And he does it quick.

If UNC hired him next month, the Tar Heels would probably be in the final 4 in 2027. If IU hired him, the Hoosiers would win the Big 10 within three years.

And Pitino is a fitness freak and has the energy of a 45 year old. He will probably coach at least another five years.

ACCT vs. CLEMSON , Russell & Curry-Out

I'm looking forward to next season and beyond. With the departure of the seniors, the young talent remaining on this team can fully take charge. They will need of course some help from the portal to get the program back to being a final 4 threat.

The Cochran, Russell, Harris and Curry era will finally be over. I know Curry is a transfer, but she like the other three has only had flashes of good play in their Cardinals career. They just haven't been reliable.

Coach Walz has to get a mix of transfers and recruits who have above average hoops IQ and a desire to win. Those two attributes have been missing for a few years.

I will be a bit disappointed if there isn't a big turnover on the roster. I would like Randolph, Berry, Roberts and Arenas all to come back and that's about it. Walz needs to land at least four transfers along with some freshmen to complete the roster.

I would think there has to be many players in the portal who would love to play for Louisville. I guess it comes down to NIL money?

I have questioned the PG position for next year and the more I think about it…I think Taj or Berry could fill that role. They don’t necessarily need a ‘true’ PG and as long as they have 2-3 trusted ball handlers then that would work. I really hope to see a portal add - power forward-type who loves to rebound and play defense. Along with another 6’1-6’4” player who can shoot and drive to the rim when needed. I know those are big wants, but we can all dream.
