Greatest College Sports Town in America Louisville

Many laughed about this Goal when Tom Jurich said this made it a goal for the University of Louisville, and the City of Louisville! Reality is he made Goal happen!! I don't want to hear about Starkville, MS, or Clemson, SC, or Raleigh/Durham/ Chapel Hill, NC. Tom Jurich made this happen just a few short years ago! Louisville is NOT A PRO SPORTS TOWN, NEVER HAS BEEN ONE! Does our new Leadership at UL have this Vision too ? That is not a question for just Vince Tyra. It's a question that should be asked of the following in our current UL Leadership: Dr. Neeli, Vince Tyra, BOT Chair Grissom, All BOT Members, All ULAA Board Members. What Reporters in the Media, including Radio Media, Print Media, Internet Media are going to have the Guts to ask this tough question??? Who will ask our Government Leaders this tough question ( Governor, Mayor, Council) others?? I think answers to these questions should be on the record so common folks like you & me can make informed decisions about who the Leaders of UL should be? Also Who Our Government Leaders Should Be. Make decisions on $$$$ we donate, gift to UL & UL Foundation. How do others reading this thread feel about this??

Another thing to like re: AppSt D...

They not only fly around, but they TACKLE. Not just "hit" guys and then "hope" they go down. They *know* how to wrap up and tackle. Watch how they wrap then drive with their legs. I was always taught to "bring your feet" when you tackle, which means you run through the tackle, which gives you a LOT more leverage. These kids at every position do that. Let's HOPE that the new staff teaches that here.

Color Guard - Yum! Center

I have noticed this season UofL is not using the color guard to present the American Flag for the National Anthem. Instead both teams are facing the West end of the arena where the flag is displayed at the rafters.

I have a few theories:

1) It’s a time issue. The color guard takes time to process in and off the court. The team lineups are next and maybe they don’t want much of a gap from the National Anthem and lineups.

2) The American flag is positioned in between the National Champion and Final Four banners. What better way to make your opponent have to look up and see the caliber of opponent they will be facing. Also for the Louisville players it’s a good reminder of the history of the program they represent.

WBB welcomes 2009 Final Four squad back and downs NKU 92-59

It was wonderful to see the WBB 2009 Final Four team again yesterday at halftime. Angel, Candyce, Dez, Gwen, Becky, Keisha, Laura, Chauntise and all but three of the squad were introduced at halftime. Angel wins in the "nattily attired" category and Laura Terry takes the "are you sure it's her" prize...with a spiked, punk haircut.

For face dives, Evans efforts, rebounding woes and balanced playing and scoring time -- let's gather in a semi-circle and applaud each other while we're introduced in today's..

FIVE THINGS ABOUT THIS GAME

5) Speed Defeats Rebounding. The Norse, in strong Viking fashion, were a large and healthy group of girls but they could not match the quickness of Jazmine Jones Airlines flights #23, #11 and #1. The Cards were outrebounded 39-33 in the contest but won fast break points 16-0, the steals battle 10-4 and forced 21 NKU turnovers while just committing only five. I'm pretty sure Dana Evans is still stripping the ball from the freshman Norse guards and sauntering in for layups in a darkened YUM! Center this morning.

4) Shooken, not stirred. Kylee Shook was a Cardinal who did have some success inside with a strong 15 points and 11 rebounds. Despite the sore knees, she had the Cards only double-double. When asked in the post-game presser what she wanted for Christmas, she glibly replied "A new body". Somewhere, deep in the dark recesses of the mad scientist Jeff Walz's laboratory, that XMAS wish is probably underway. (Insert evil, chilling laugh here).

3) Distracted by the presentation? The awesome halftime videos, presentations and introductions of the 2009 squad were witnessed by the current UofL WBB squad. They did not return to the locker room. Maybe that was still on their minds as the second half began. The Cards were out-scored 21-15 in the third frame by Northern Kentucky and had their 51-24 halftime lead trimmed to 18 at 59-41 before ending the quarter with the 66-45 advantage. Maybe they were dreaming about when they'll be gathered to come out and receive their Final Four accolades in 2027.

2) She's down, but she's back up. She's OK !! Jess Laemmle has no fear. The Cardinal reserve Attack Yorkie will plunge into any situation, anytime on the court. A lot of times, she'll end up on the floor because, well, she's the smallest one out there. In the fourth quarter, she was turning to fill out a lane on yet another Cardinal fast-break but pivoted too quickly and lost her balance while starting to run. Ensuing was a scary face-plant on the court. But, she jumped back up and got down court. Paulie mentioned to Asia post-game, while walking by both of them in the northeast corner of the arena, that Asia should have yelled "Heel" to slow Jess down. Both "Nite-nite" and Jess smiled over the comment. We love Jess, she embodies the fight and spirit on this squad.

1) You can stop what you can't catch. If you look up "speed" in Webster's Dictionary, you'll probably see a picture of Dana Evans. She came off the bench for a game and career high 21 points on 8-12 shooting. A lot of those were off fast breaks.. She also added six assists, four steals and hit all four free throws. All in just 20 minutes of court time. It's rumored that one of the YUM! Center assigned policemen wrote her a speeding ticket at halftime.

All in all, a nice win on a day where Louisville honored the first of Walz's three Final Four teams and took care of business on the hardwood. 17 days before they return to Denny Crum Court. It's hard to believe we won't see them down by the river until next year.

The Infield

Other than the Cardinal starting pitchers, the infield looks to be fairly set. Not to say that there aren't Freshmen that won't push a few of these 4 guys, but they will have to push pretty hard.

Fitz,Lavey,Dunn and Wyatt will probably be in the starting lineup that first pitch in February. Fitz,Wyatt and Lavey have been thru the wars and it's as solid of a veteran group that you could hope for anchoring an infield.

Post game radio interviews discussed the coming break ....

When I really looked at the schedule a week or so ago, and saw the long breaks between games, I got excited about what that could mean for the further development of the team.

Tonight, in the post game interviews with Paul and Bobby V, both Jordan and Coach discussed how they are looking forward to getting to work on "themselves" for extended periods of time.

I think the team we see emerge in January will be much better than the one that has surprised most all of us so far this year. And this is cause for great hope.

I know the schedule is tough. But if we stay healthy, I think we knock off a handful of those tough teams down the stretch. And become one of those March teams "you don't want to see in your bracket".

Thoughts about the BB Team.

1) In the last 3 games I felt that our team did not respond well to the physical play of our opponents.
And when we move into conference play its going to get even more physical.

2) Perry & Cunningham have to contribute 15-20 points a game consistently when we get into
Conference. It will become harder to score around the rim. The thing that concerns me is I
think teams are not going to send help to the post. They are going to stay with the shooters (especially Nwora & McMahon) and make Enoch, Williams and Agau
score over their man.
3) VJ is a lost soul right now. I think what would help him most is just forget about creating offense.
Do everything else like a mad man. Play defense, set screens. Score off offense rebounds.
Create steals. Good things will then start to happen and his confidence will rise.

Will be interesting to see how this team progresses.

A Tale of Two Program Paths

Just starting to watch the way Satterfield is gathering his staff makes reflect on the two paths we could have taken with regard to finding a new coach after being turned down by Brohm. Louisville really finds itself in a place between the top traditional destination powerhouse teams, and those obvious stepping stone schools were any decent coach will be itching to get out the door as soon as they can. The question is how can Louisville pull itself up to the upper tier without having the advantage of decades of tradition and success, being a huge Land Grant state institution, or having endless deep financial pockets from boosters?

We could have had a higher-profile P5 coach like West Virginia’s come in here and likely be competitive more quickly, but to what end? I think the only possible way Louisville can build its program to a level that regularly competes for an ACC playoff berth, is to create a unique culture that attracts players above what we would typically get. Since we don’t have the advantages of an OSU, Alabama, or Notre Dame, we have to find another angle. Clemson has done that to some degree, even though they have far more tradition than Louisville. Players want to go play for Dabo and that culture. If you think about it, App State has many institutional disadvantages that Satterfield and his staff had to overcome. It’s not an easy place to recruit to. They seem to have overcome those advantages by coaching players up and creating a positive winning culture that players wanted to belong. Time will tell if Satterfield and his staff can translate that formula to the P5, but I think it’s our only chance to make this place special and not be a NC State, Baylor, or a West Virginia. I like the path we took, because it's more risky on the surface, but I think this guy has the potential to figure it out and make it work from what I've seen so far.

$3 Million Committed towards UofL Training Facility expansion

One of the reasons I am posting this is the Keuber brothers graduated from Meade County High School and I attended school with one of them. They have been...um...just a tad more successful in the post school years than I have been.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Rick and David Kueber (pronounced KEE-ber), leading Planet Fitness franchisees and co-founders of Sun Tan City, have committed $3 million toward the expansion of the University of Louisville's campus training facility for men's and women's basketball and women's lacrosse.

"We're thrilled to be continuing our support of Cardinal athletics with this gift," said Rick Kueber. "The vision Vince Tyrahas for the department and the positive energy coming from Coach (Chris) Mack, Coach (Jeff) Walz, Coach (Scott) Teeter and their student-athletes made this an easy decision for us. We're proud to have our brand and our name aligned with these programs."

The Kuebers lead the franchise group who owns and operates the 15 Louisville and Southern Indiana-area clubs as well as 35 other Planet Fitness locations spread over five states (Missouri, Tennessee, Illinois, Arkansas, and Mississippi). At 50 franchise locations and growing, the Kuebers are among the top franchisees in the Planet Fitness system.

"We want to thank Rick and David, as well as their families, for their continued extremely generous support for Cardinal Athletics," said Vince Tyra, UofL Vice President/Director of Athletics. "They've been there for us each time we've asked them to step up over the last several years. We are blessed to have them in our community. We sincerely appreciate their investment as we seek to improve on opportunities for our student-athletes."

In recognition of the donation, the currently named YUM! Center practice facility on the UofL campus will be renamed the Planet Fitness - Kueber Center, a move approved by the UofL Board of Trustees on Thursday. Yum! Brands will exit their current naming rights agreement for the practice facility at the end of the year and provide a $625,000 gift to close their commitment. In addition to naming the training facility, the current Green Lot parking at Cardinal Stadium will be named the Planet Fitness Purple Lot.

"We sincerely appreciate the commitment that Yum! Brands has made to our university as much as to our athletic facilities," said Tyra. "I recall being in attendance at the unveiling of our practice facility in 2007 and the pride my family felt for YUM! Brands stepping up on the original sponsorship."

This is the third major gift provided by the Kueber Brothers, growing their support to the university's athletic department to $9 million over the last 10 years. The Kuebers previously committed $3 million to UofL in 2008 through their Sun Tan City business for the expansion of the Cardinals' football complex and another $3 million through Planet Fitness in 2013.

Opened in August 2007, The YUM! Center will be renamed the Planet Fitness - Kueber Center in January and houses training facilities and offices for the Cardinals' men's basketball, women's basketball and women's lacrosse teams.

The building contains two separate practice courts for both men's and women's basketball, separate locker rooms for the three sports teams that train in the facility, two training rooms to support both men and women, as well as a pair of expansive theatres/team meeting rooms. Also included are spacious offices and conference rooms for the coaching staffs.

The facility, which is located at 2432 South Floyd Street on the UofL campus, contains more than 60,000-square-feet in floor space. Plans are being formulated to use the Kuebers' gift to expand the weight room, locker rooms and enhance the entire facility.
