Spring Football Notes

Had a chance to meet Coach Satterfield and the staff last night. I came away very impressed with everyone I met. The staff is very young and energetic.

The one "theme" around all of his remarks were about having the right attitude and effort with a focus on bringing in high character recruits that excel in the classroom, community and on the field.

All hired coaching staff members are now in Louisville and they had a 7pm "coaches meeting" last night to get everyone on the same page.

Coach said that Spring Football would start very early this season; much earlier than in years past for the Cardinals.

His logic behind moving it up made a lot of sense to me. He said rather than give guys 3 weeks of weights.....then Spring Ball for a month.....and then back to weights and conditioning, he's going to have Spring Practice first.

I think he wants to set the tone early for what his expectations will be. But, moving it up also means, if there are any injuries or surgeries needed, players have an extra 6-7 weeks in advance to heal up and recover.

Coach Satterfield said that he hoped most of the spring practices would be wrapped by Spring Break (March 11-17). Lastly, he said the Spring Game this year will probably be played on a Thursday night.

The SEC

I think what you are seeing - finally - is an SEC spending money on BBall. Of course, when they play us, the emotion is always with UK. But, how in the %$#@ did we lose to this team by 11 at the Yum? The SEC is improved, but this UK team is like the rest of them the past 3 years...minimal defense. I think the lid-is-off, and UK players know they are 1st and 2nd rounders...why work really hard when you going to be drafted anyway? The only game they bust their asses is against us, and I think it will always be that way, no matter the UK coach. I think this UK loss will cost them 2 seeding positions come March. Still, way to go SEC and taking this game more seriously. There are 4 more SEC teams out there who are, finally, really good. I shall now kick back and watch the replay on ESPN.

Carter, WBB Cards defeat Duke 73-51

UofL WBB traveled to Durham Sunday and got their first win ever in Cameron Indoor Stadium with a 22-point, 73-51 defeat of Duke. For "A.C." comfort, letting three-dom ring, secretaries of the defense and jumping to the Jazz, let's take a trip down Tobacco Road and go to:

FIVE THINGS ABOUT THIS GAME

5)
You have to put the ball in the hoop. Duke didn't do a lot of that Sunday, with just 31.4% shooting and a face-palm 2-13 from the three-point range. Take out Gorecki and Odom's combined 9-22 marksmanship and Duke shoots 7 for 29. That won't win many contests and it didn't Sunday.

4) Hopped up on Jaz. She only managed five points, all in the first half, but Jazmine Jones led Louisville with 10 rebounds and that was almost 1/3 of the Cards rebounding total. Good players find ways to help when the shot isn't falling and Jaz kept tracking down errant Blue Devil shots. Seven of those grabs on the defensive end. Her and Fuehring (7) were cleaning the glass, even though Duke had a 39-34 rebounding edge for the 40 minutes.

3) Incoming! The Cards found success from three-point land, sinking 12 in 24 attempts. We'll get to Arica's seven in a bit -- Durr added two, Evans connected on two and Lindsey Duvall drained one late. Five of them came in the pivotal fourth quarter, when Louisville stretched a 10-point lead to 25 in just five minutes.

2) Not to worry, Asia is just fine. Although she disappointed some of her way-too-overly concerned fans with just 13 points, Durr found other ways to contribute with four assists and two steals and fantastic passing. Six points in the fourth when the Cards were puling away. Maybe it's what Louisville needs now -- a chance for others to step up when defenses are zeroing in on #25. To reach the Final Four, even to beat Notre Dame Thursday, it's going to take more than just one person. Evans had a great game, so did Shook and that leads us to:

1) Is the A.C. on? Oh, yeah! Arica Carter hit her first four threes (in the space of two minutes in the first quarter) and led Duke 12-2 at one point. By herself. She finished with 23 points on 7-10 three point shooting and once again showed that the Cards are not one dimensional in their offensive attack. She chilled the Duke defense with her bombs, and when they eventually decided to guard her -- it left Asia open for 11 second-half points. Diversion. Strategy. Multiple fronts of attack. All these things were present Sunday.

There are still some people calling Louisville an "average" team (when they are sans a blockbuster Durr performance). Seriously? What's so average about a 14-0 record? Is #3 (and maybe a shot at #2) in the nation "average"? Maybe it's time some of the critics stop staring at the football blocking their vision and accept this team for what it is

And (repeat after me). What is this UofL WBB squad?

Great. Undefeated. Carrying multiple weapons. Very capable of stepping up when one or two parts of it aren't scintillating. Put that in your Satterfield flux capacitor and see what results spit out.

Onto to South Bend. There is a great and present danger waiting there. The National Champions. The Irish have been running roughshod over ACC turf so far with 56 and 21 point wins in their first two conference contests.

Walz beat them twice in 2017-18. I wouldn't count him, or the Cards, out Thursday night.

A word of caution

i remember when Bobby left the first time. We hired Steve Kragthorpe, who seemed to have a sterling resume. Everyone was excited about having a “player’s coach” and someone who would be much better liked than Petrino; someone who wanted to make a career here. That turned into a disaster.
CSS has a more extensive record than Krags did, and for that reason I have more confidence. But let CSS actually coach a game here- maybe a couple of seasons worth of games, before jumping up and down. We’ve been burned before.

Chargers game planned well for Lamar and the Ravens.

Chargers have bottled up Lamar and the running attack for the Ravens all day. Their D Line has been all over Lamar and the passing attack too.

Clearly, they broke down the film of their game a couple of weeks ago, where the Ravens had their number, and made the right adjustments for the game today.

A frustrating day for the Ravens for sure. And some of the crowd showing their frustration with some boos. Which kinda sucks. But I do understand it. This is the big leagues.

WBB Hangs on for the 73-66 win over UNC

Almost the "Nightmare on Main Street" last night, with Louisville getting outscored by 10 in the second half and seeing their lead cut to two three times in the fourth. The WBB Cards hang on, though, for the conference-opening and 13th straight win 73-66. For flight schedules, rebounds, free throw disparity and turnovers fresh from the Main Street bakery -- let's jump to:

5 THINGS ABOUT THIS GAME

5) Does Gravity Exist for her?
Jasmine Jones continued her "air show" last night with two alley-oop scores and an incredible blocked shot on a three-point attempt. Jasmine Jones Airlines providing non-stop service to "Victory City" with 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Clear the runway, she's landing!

4) Chairwomen of the Board(s). The Cards out-rebounded a taller UNC team 45-30. Jeff Walz downplayed that, indicating that the two squads were the worst in the ACC in rebounding. Still, it's good to see Kylee Shook with 11 grabs. She's continuing her transformation from Bambi to Thumper. Sam Fuehring and Bionca Dunham combining for 12 grabs. 18 second-chance points, too

3) Which gate? When? A few were surprised when Arica Carter did not get the start and Dana Evans did. It was revealed in the post-game presser that she missed her return flight to Louisville from Christmas break and the first team meeting after the squad got back. That daggone L.A. airport! She did carry the luggage for the Cards in the final two minutes last night, though, with six of the final ten points and a key steal when UNC was threatening to cut into the Cards lead again.

2) Call 'em both ways, Bryan! UNC went to the stripe 27 times, the Cards 17. Janelle Bailey, the massive 6'4" UNC center was getting away with assault, battery, hit and run and intent to harm all night. Bryan Brunette, lead ref, was obviously watching a different game. When was the last time you saw Asia Durr pick up four fouls? Last night's crew was one that we can only hope gets assigned to the OVC or AAC the rest of the season.

1) Get 'Em While They're Hot! The Cards decided to re-open the Main Street Bakery for 2019 and produced 16 turnovers while forcing UNC into just 12. As Coach Walz says, the Cards have a better chance to score when they throw the ball to one of their own. Everyone was in the kitchen that played last night except Mykasa Robinson, who just played a minute. 16 turnover against Notre Dame or UConn = a loss. Maybe a bit rusty after two weeks off?

To Sum it up:

Yes, readers, the ACC is a tough conference. I do think UNC will make a big noise this year and knock off a few of the top-25 ranked ACC schools. They have the potential to be very good. 33% shooting isn't going to win a lot of games, though. And Bailey is just a sophomore (face palm)

For Louisville, it's the "just survive somehow" mantra to ring in the New Year. Walz refused to call the timeouts when the going got close. Maybe that's good, letting them figure it out by themselves on the court. If Louisville had lost, though -- OK, let's not go there.

So, a tale to two halves -- but a Cardinal win.

Just survive somehow. On a quiet Asia Durr night, Arica, Kylee and Jaz made the necessary noise.
