Spread check. Holding steady UofL -20.5.

I just keep remembering last year’s game at Pitt. Cards were in control early. Opening drive TD, three and out by Pitt, and Cards are driving to go up 14-0. Then they turned it over and completely lost their focus. Pitt tied it up and end up winning easily. Stanford is not as good as last year’s Pitt team but the game still scares me.
At least the crowd won’t be a factor.

Spread check. Holding steady UofL -20.5.

There's not a nice way to say it, but Stanford is not good. Losers of 6 in a row, the Cardinal are getting outscored 221-109 in conference play. Now, they do have a surprising win at Syracuse earlier this season, and they started 2-1 before the six game skid. They have a fairly ineffective offense, ranked 122nd in the nation, and their defense isn't a whole lot better, ranked 105th. The only way UofL comes home without a win is they approach this game over confident. That's where the bye-week comes into factor. Are their heads right? Are they feeling too good about themselves? There's actually a path to the playoffs, however remote those chances might be. Will they maintain focus, one game at a time? There's that mysterious curse Brohm has, too. After a big win, he nearly always takes an L.

On paper, the Cards win fairly easily. I'd love for this to be an early rout, leave no doubt. Rhyme unintended.

Indiana

Was listening to College Sports channel on Sirus Radio this morning. They were discussing IU and the consensus was that the Hoosiers are in the playoffs regardless of what happens at Ohio State next week unless they also lose to Purdue. One commentator said that IU can’t be penalized for having a schedule with only one opponent in the top 40 (OSU).
Well they can be in my opinion because they chickened out of a game at Louisville this season. No one even brought that up.

UT Martin exposed us

I agree that this is probably a bubble team at best. We just don't have much of a front court threat scoring, rebounding and defensively. She's a trooper and loyal as it gets, but Cochran simply is not athletic enough to excel in the paint.

Same with Harris who is even slower than Cochran. The two forwards recruited from across the sea are not athletic or reliable shooters. The entire front line is just not good enough.

Cards have the guards though but no Dana Evans or Asia Durr who won games by themselves. I like Berry and Roberts but Arenas hasn't shown much yet. Same with Randolph who I believe will be a special player one day.

I think Walz figured this may be a lean season when he decided to recruit high school instead of transfers. He's building for the future.

Oh, so Kelsey has to be as bad as Payne to make me right about him? LOL...

Payne is about as low a bar as anyone can come up with. You could probably win as many games coaching as he did. Hell no Payne is not a legit measuring stick.

Let the U of L basketball program start averaging crowds like Saturday's which was still five thousand below capacity. Let this program finally win one damn NCAA game again. And maybe start contributing financially to a bankrupt athletic department.

THEN I'll be acknowledging progress in men's basketball...

That’s reasonable, and I’ll be holding you to it.

As far as attendance goes, if we ever average more than 5K below capacity again in that arena, I will be surprised. Somebody would have to comp me a couple of tickets for a really big game in order to entice me to sit in those seats with the horrible sight lines.

Bad feeling because I think there is a big gap in athletes in games I watched tonight compare to what I watched on Saturday.
I don't think so.

UK is also not very athletic or at least not more athletic than UofL.

Brea, Carr, Amour, and Kriisa are all laterally slow with limited athletic ability.

It's difficult to get any sort of feel about their defense from the first two games but it is worth noting that Duke almost beat them while shooting 4-23 from deep. Duke also outrebounded them and had fewer turnovers - UK only forced 7 turnovers all night. Looking at their stats that means Duke shot 50% on their 2 point attempts and scored 46 points in the paint.

Here is my roster comparison: (This is based on ability and potential, not on how they've performed during the first 2 games of the year.)

Chucky - Butler
Koren - Oweh
Edwards - Robinson
Rayne - Brea
Pryor - Carr
Scott - Garrison

Then it comes down to what group of remaining players you would rather have:

Waterman
Traore
Hadley
Rooths

or

Williams
Amour
Kriisa

I said it before the season - I think both rosters are shockingly similar and would go as far to say I think UofL has a better roster on paper. It will be up to PK to get his team to do what Pope is getting his team to do.

Hate on Payne all you want. A 22-point home loss against the #12 team in the country is not significant improvement from last year. Don’t believe me, check comparable scores against the best teams on last year’s schedule.

Dominating hapless teams gives you a false sense of accomplishment. And style points—shooting and missing a bunch of outside shots—isn’t progress either.

Paul Rogers said at the 5-minute mark in the first half that “Tennessee didn’t buy into the hype.” Nor should our own fans…

So when Kelsey posts a winning season this year, will you shut the hell up with this “not seeing significant improvement from Kenny Payne” bullsh!t? Or will you continue to gerrymander the data to fit your clowns narrative?

A few thoughts on the MBB team

  • We're shooting 28% from three, 269th in the country. If our rotation players shot at the level they did last year (including a career low for Hepburn), we'd be at 36% and 120th in the country.
  • Re three point shooting, Edwards and Waterman are the "problems" as of now. Waterman is 30% on 5 attempts/game; Edwards is 22% on 4.5 attempts/game. Those numbers can/will come up. Smith is shooting like we expected: 38% on 10 attempts/game!
  • Rotations needs to get fixed. Hepburn has never played fewer than 30 minutes/game, and Edwards played that much last year. Both are in the low 20s/game as of now. Those were your two marquee transfers (with Pryor): you need to be playing them high 20s/game (at least).
  • Edwards shot diet looks much different. At JMU he took about 2 threes/game (shot 36%) and 7 twos (shot 49%). So far he's at 4.5 threes and 5 twos. I think we're messing that balance up for him. His strength is his finishing around the rim-we need to be refocusing his game to do that, and then spacing around him with good shooters.
  • Again on Edwards, fixing rotations would help him I think. Guys right now are playing for 3-4 minutes before being subbed out. It's really hard to get any flow going when you do that. Edwards and Hepburn need to be in the game for longer periods.
  • As great as the PK system is, we need to develop it and find ways to get Edwards, Hepburn, and to some extent Johnson going as scorers/creators. Our ceiling as an offense is going to be very low if those guys get single digit points/game as they are now. We don't run almost any high ball screens, even though we've got a perfect set-up for it: multiple good ball handlers, plenty of spacing around them. We need to find sets to get Edwards attacking the basket downhill with movement. This is all the kind of stuff you add over a season, so I'm not panicked that its not in now. But we'll need to do it.
