This year's defense is something that is going to vex me for a very long time; what I saw back into the Spring and at the start of Fall Practice and the initial reports of the offense's complete inability to move the ball on it in the first two scrimmages--it was tough to reconcile what we saw at Stanford against SMU and Miami. There was a full two and half quarter stretch where Notre Dame did literally nothing against it. I sort of felt like Notre Dame beat us twice because there is no doubt we slept walked through the first quarter of the SMU game and with Jennings--and lacking Riley with Thornton wearing a suitcase on his right arm--it's probably a minor miracle we lost by the one controversial score.

It's going to be some time before we see a mix of incumbents like we had with Gilotte, Puryear, Dawson, Tell, et al with Konga, Guerrard and Thor Griffith and the bevy of weakside DE transfers we saw. We've had cornerback tandems going back three years that were going to play in the NFL going back through Jarvis Brownlee, Keitrel Clark and now Quincey Riley and Corey Thornton. Hopefully we get our Linebackers back--I think next year we might see the type of jump from TJ Capers we saw from Stanquan Clark who should be getting some all-ACC mentions despite that being a deep position in the ACC. It would help our case if we saw a big class of locals like the one that saw Weaver getting bounced between UK and Florida as a destination or having a Wan'Dale Robinson and Ron'Dale Moore consecutive class tandem. Local talent is cheaper.

I keep saying this, but to get to Charlotte you have to have all-ACC guys spread out across your defense; it should be pointed out this staff did recruit a very good group of safeties over the last two years out of the Portal, and we should return Hutchinson.

Agree with you Bardman, particularly about our defense. Interestingly, we held UCLA to just 66 points and played them very close the entire game. The final 7 point margin was a little misleading, as when it got down to a one possession game in the last minute or so we had to put them at the line.

As you say, these freshman need to find themselves into Jeff’s rotation.

#1 SOS and rated in top 4 most of the entire season is difficult to argue their deserving a top seed.

I do not believe the rankings this early. UConn lost 3 games to unranked opponents, but remains in the AP at #25. Most media know they are missing Karaban and they will be a whole lot better when he returns very soon.

I agree to an extent, but it is hard to deny the $$$ plus being surrounded by those athletes while playing in SEC. Keep in mind these elite guy believe they can play anywhere.

Now of the flip side playing for Brohm in an easier conference with hopefully a loaded skill group and a returning Oline is extremely good selling point.

Impossible to predict the portal but this offense especially if the Oline returns basically intact has the potential to be ridiculous.

Just for clarification; my comments were not about the Ravens coaching and play calling over the course of this season; my comments were confined to only what I witnessed in the Ravens loss Sunday to the Eagles. There were several critical opportunities where both the Ravens OL and their DL respectively failed to control the LOS; either when needing to sustain an offensive series, or stop the Eagles defensively.

I agree. Offensively they have had a really good hit and retention rate. They let Coleman go probably because Miss St offered more, but quickly filled that spot with Lacey. It didn’t work out but it did show they understood the market place.

After looking at the OLine, there is an opportunity to return key pieces to that line. If R Brown returns you have a really good core. Gonzalez will be hard to replace. But the rest of the line are returning.

I am not so sure of Auburn, as Moss expresses a desire to play for a conference champion and I am afraid the SEC has already started moving past Auburn.

Texas, Alabama, UGA and LSU are purportedly investing enough money in the NIL to distance themselves from the rest of the conference. TX A&M, Oklahoma and Arkansas are expected to be right behind those aforementioned.

Agreed; coming off a season ending injury will minimize Reiger’s NIL value. I expect he may be one who returns.

For those who question Jeff Brohm as our HC; the OP provides another subtle example of why we are so fortunate to have the Brohms back here in Louisville. This staff’s ability to find talent in both HS and Transfer Portal is extraordinary. We are not Alabama, OSU, Michigan, ND or any of the other “usual suspects” who attract the best of the best each year; UL must rely on our coaching staff to find those candidates that are largely overlooked.

There is no substitute for speed, but even more important is how they both move in space from seeing the hole and how they operate in that area. Both have some wiggle. Add in Lacey that is another guy that has elite speed and wiggle. Bell is fast but no wiggle still learning how to use his body.

If they all stay and the Oline comes together watch out.

Reiger is interesting because he is coming off an injury. There is always a market for edge guys but I can’t imagine he goes up the food chain. He was good but not a game changer at this level. Now at a lower level he could be a game changer when healthy.

He needs to see his value. Hopefully, Louisville will match whatever the market bears. He is a good edge when healthy and a position on need. I would guess Green will do the same.

So far all the rest will transfer laterally or down. I can see Sanker at GT.

This will be a bidding war. Auburn is going to throw a boatload at a QB. He does fit Freeze offense. They have a ton of talent. That is where I think he ends up.
