CHICAGO (WDRB) -- Chinanu Onuaku came to the NBA's pre-draft combine knowing two things -- he had some work to do to show scouts that he belongs in the first round of the draft, and he'll need some feedback to decide whether to sign with an agent or sign on for one more season at the University of Louisville.
He said on Thursday that he doesn't expect to have the information he needs to make a decision until well after the combine.
"It's how I feel," Onuaku said. "If I feel like I'm ready and I'm hearing what I need to hear from the teams, I'll make a decision. I feel like it's gone well so far. . . . I haven't really thought about what I need to hear, but I know what I want to hear. . . . I don't really feel like it's a tough call. If I feel like I can play in the NBA and somebody wants me, I'm going to go. If I feel like I need one more year, I'm going to stay."
In a scrimmage Wednesday, Onuaku does what he does -- 11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 of 6 from the field, 3 of 5 from the line, two blocks, two assists, in 20 minutes.
Onuaku has talked to nine teams so far in Chicago, including Golden State, Cleveland, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland, Boston, San Antonio and Dallas. After the combine, he expects to work out for Toronto, Boston, Atlanta and perhaps Indiana.
He admitted, when teams show interest, he takes a look at that team's personnel and tries to see if he can imagine a place for himself. When Boston interviewed him, for instance, he acknowledged that "they have a couple of big men under contract but nobody who really does the kinds of things I do."
Onuaku has not been a projected first-rounder in the mock drafts, though he said, "I don't look at the mock drafts. Those people don't matter. . . . All that matters is what the teams think."
If he doesn't hear what he needs to hear from the teams at the combine, Onuaku could still return to Louisville and be one of the featured big men in college basketball next season. But he admitted, he worries about further sanctions from the NCAA as it investigates allegations from a former Louisville escort that she provided strippers and escorts to Cardinal players and recruits.
I feel like there's more coming. I'm not sure if there is, but I feel like there's more coming. Because the NCAA ain't banned us, it was the school. They're probably going to do something to us, I just don't know what it is."
Asked if that weighed onto his decision, he said, "Yeah. I thought about that a lot. It edged into my mind. I'm talking to my people about it. They just want me to do what's best for me and what I think is best."
Onuaku said he thinks the Cardinals could have a championship contender if he returns. "We were that kind of team last year," he said, "and we only lost two guys."
He said he doesn't really have a checklist for what he has to hear in order to make a call. But he said, "If I do ell here and I get good feedback," it could be all the incentive he needs.
He still has a decision to make. But the input he needs shouldn't be too far away.

I think all he lacks is the face up 15 footer. If you've got that they have to respect the moves at or around the bucket. He's got some definite upside.

If he goes, the Cards lose little, frankly, considering who would replace him. If he stays, his attitude may be the first thing that needs tinkering. His apparent unease over the sanctions thing - what difference does that make?? He'll still play an entire season, even if we are restricted from the tourney. Look how highly he is ranked even from the last year's experience sans tourney.

The truth is, sanctions against UofL - while they could be dispiriting to he and his buddies - will have zero effect on his draft rating.

I wish the young man the best. He gave us two solid years and he improved his game almost from game to game. He's very young still which is a positive to the NBA, and his ceiling is high. I can see why NBA teams are interested in him, and with how he was talking in that interview, I personally would prefer he stay in the draft. He doesn't want to play college ball. He wants to play in the NBA. That was pretty obvious.

That is not all he is lacking, but would be a big addition to his game. Unfortunately, he is very unlikely to develop such a shot. He cannot hit a 15 footer from the line while not being guarded, unless he shoots underhanded. Some people just have broken shots.

I agree. If he really has no desire to play college ball anymore and would basically resent having to come back then it might be better if he doesn't. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have him back on the team next year because he had become a solid college big man but it sounds like he wants to stay in the draft this season no matter what.

He would be better off coming back. The Cards would benefit greatly for him to return. With him, if eligible for the tourney, he makes us a Final Four - National Championship caliber team. Without him, Sweet 16 to possible Elite 8 at best.

I doubt that the rest of the team would agree with you....especially Mahmoud, Stockman or Mango, if he comes back too. CRP likely would disagree with you too. Shortsighted might fit you better

Gotta agree that there's plenty of guys that have shown they can play.I always worry about guys with one eye on the NBA.It hurts what this program has become and Onuaku would definitely fit into that category if he comes back.I'd be tickled pink if he came back and proved me wrong. It's all about championships and what it takes to get them.

He desperately needs to work on his defense, I said it all year that he has no lateral movement. Once a player faces up to him it is easy to blow by him. However, when he does decide to go pro I think he will do well. The big decision is to go when you can make the most money.
Let' see go and be a 2nd round draft pick and make good money or go and be a 1st round draft pick and make great money. I also hope he comes back but if he does I hope he comes back to help the team and not come back to pad his stats.

I agree. Lack of lateral movement = reaching = fouls called = seat on bench until halftime. Once he gets to moving those feet, watch out!
