LOUISVILLE VS. PUERTO RICO, GAME 7 UPDATES

Final: Well, Puerto Rico made it interesting with some late 3s, but Louisville held on to win despite more issues with turnovers. Mangok Mathiang had a strong sequence in the final minute when he got a dunk and a blocked shot, then played good defense on Puerto Rico's best player, Benito Santiago, in the post. Louisville 77, Puerto Rico 72.

Late fourth: Nice baby hook from Mangok Mathiang. He is just so much more comfortable on offense. He is catching the ball. He is posting up. He is making moves. A total 180 from last season. Louisville 72, Puerto Rico 65.

Mid-fourth: Second time this week, someone got a technical. This time, it was a Puerto Rican player who said a little too much to an official. Louisville has been in control here in the second half. Mathiang, Onuaku, Lee and Mitchell are playing very well. Louisville 70, Puerto Rico 64.

End 3: One thing to note -- Bompy is apparently planning to come to Louisville for a game or two this season. So there's that. The hero Louisville needs.

Also, Deng Adel, Donovan Mitchell, Quentin Snider all finished the quarter really well and helped Louisville get a small cushion of a lead. Mitchell and Adel are so good in the open floor. They have been effective attacking the basket in transition. Damion Lee has 20 points and eight rebounds so far. Louisville 55, Puerto Rico 50.

Mid-third: Damion Lee has taken over the quarter, getting into the lane, drawing fouls and hitting jumpers. He scored the first seven points of the half for Louisville and has been active in every way. A few frustrating moments for Rick Pitino -- Trey Lewis missed an assignment in the zone that led to a Puerto Rico 3 -- but Lee and some nice post moves and buckets from Anas Mahmoud and Mangok Mathiang have made up for it. Louisville 48, Puerto Rico 43.

Second half ready to go: Same starters back out for Louisville -- Snider, Lewis, Lee, Mathiang and Onuaku. Cards have to do a better job of taking care of the ball and attacking. They were settling in the second quarter for jump shots.

Half: It's a bit of a sketchy setting for tonight's game as far as wifi and other things go, so apologies for the delay. Louisville didn't play all that great, but neither did Puerto Rico. Damion Lee has 11 points (4-8 FG) and five rebounds at the half, the best in both categories for Louisville. He's been so good this week. The Cards are shooting 51.9 percent from the field but they have 15 turnovers and are 4 for 9 from the free-throw line. Rick Pitino is not pleased. Louisville 35, Puerto Rico 34.

End 1: Damion Lee just makes the team so much more lethal on offense. Defenders have to pay attention to where he is, and that lets his teammates hit crevices a bit harder than when he isn't there. Just bagged a 3 to end the quarter. Louisville 23, Puerto Rico 18.

Late first: Puerto Rico has changed its pace and is playing much faster on both ends. Louisville's struggling on offense. Lots of sloppy passes and quick shots. Louisville 20, Puerto Rico 18.

Mid-first: What a great start from Louisville. Quentin Snider is on the ball tonight and looks so much comfortable. Chinanu Onuaku and Mangok Mathiang are running the floor, blocking shots and rebounding. Onuaku just scooped up a loose ball, led the break and shoveled to Damion Lee for a 3. Trey Lewis is attacking and not settling. Good start. Louisville 18, Puerto Rico 5.

At the tip: Louisville will start Quentin Snider, Trey Lewis, Damion Lee, Mangok Mathiang and Chinanu Onuaku tonight.

Awesome. Really glad to hear Mangok is catching the ball and has a baby hook shot and that he feels a lot more comfortable on offense.

THIS YEAR Accurate free throw shooting and free throw practice - No ifs, ands, or buts - Sick of what has happened with free throw shooting the last two years!

This board has been tough on him and I don't understand why. He's a low rated player that was taken in as a project and he tries hard every minute he plays. He's limited offensively but his contributions were felt towards the end of the season.

Maybe he can improve some more in his JR year.

I think most of his criticism has been due to him beig unable to do the simplest things on the court like catch the ball and score the ball from 3ft and in. Low rated project or not, you have to be able to catch the ball, and u have to be able to score from 3 ft away from the goal if you are. 6'10 and play high d1 basketball. I'm not talking post game, he just hadnt shown any touch under the basket, even when open. Also he had the unfair comparisons to gorgui because of there African backgrounds.

The good thing is he is obviously improving those weaknesses and I think he will be a fan favorite this year because of his attitude and hustle.

Mangok looked pretty good in the low post in that game. But I'm not expecting a double digit scorer and rebounder in him at U of L.

As Pitino said when he arrived, he's an Otis George type of player. And Otis averaged 5 points and 5 rebounds his senior year, the 2005 Final Four team. Arguably, Mangok is already approaching that level of performance...
