1/8/22 LOUISVILLE AT FLORIDA STATE GAME THREAD- 8:00 PM ESPNU

Don't have the horses. Appreciate the effort but they are just a very average team. I can't envision any major improvements coming between now and March. As Denny Green once said, "The are who we thought they were!"

Will still root 'em on but won't get mad at them. Why bother getting mad at a mediocre team?

You can't get much better open 3 point shots from one of your best shooters.

I knew we would lose this game for a million different reasons and most of them occurred during the game.

I think the Cards are improving. Curry, Ellis and Faulkner are gaining more minutes. Sam is back to playing his game and even Withers played better tonight.

I think if we keep improving we will be okay for a decent post season seed. But winning this game tonight was just a lot to overcome and this team still hasn't gelled just yet.

Miami just beat Duke. Remember when Miami was the loss that was an albatross around our necks in not making the tourney last year. They now lead the ACC.

Well here goes the fouls and then we will start launching 3’s down court. It will either work or we will lose by a bigger margin.

They have four really good players and their role players are not that bad either. I do think they're peaking early and in Mid February they may come down to earth.

Had Cross made both of those 3's, we could have won this game. Louisville is getting better. They just need to take advantage of their opportunities.

It's like Henry said in Goodfellas-
" Everybody takes a beating sometimes"

At least we didn’t give up and we played better the 2nd half than we did the first half. I still think this team can develop into a good team. I am glad we aren’t doing the run and gun offense anymore.

Maybe so. They clearly weren’t negatively affected by losing Cross.

Keep in mind they are currently in the "easier" stretch of games. They really needed this game IMO.

The schedule from 1/22 through end of year is significantly tougher than this early part of the league schedule.

Either way they did show some flashes tonight. I just don't think there's enough in the cupboard to get to where fans want them to get. There's also legit questions to if the current HC is the answer but that's probably another topic for another time after the season is over.

Pretty much every night ain't it Hop?
Curry is for sure showing something in the paint. Sam, when under control, can slash. But they just struggle to run much of an offense. They don't have enough guys (or any guy?) that can consistently set up guys for good looks. A bunch of decent players just kinda rolled into a roster and maybe just not enough high end talent and/or versatility to reach fringe T25 level.

I think there is enough info there. If he gets a Level 2 sanction, he’s gone. If he avoids that, he stays. He’s a decent coach. Not worth buying out but worth jettisoning if it’s free

I'm not saying I agree or disagree I probably shouldn't have thrown that in there, I prefer to wait until a season is over before evaluating a HC. I just don't see a "turning point" for this team, and that's not me taking shots at the players or coaches. I just don't think they are good enough.

Well think about it, this is not exactly the golden era of UofL basketball.

To FSU's credit, they've really just had better players during this stretch.

After having been to the FSU arena and visiting Tallahassee, it seriously boggles my mind how they could get better players.

Bad teams never make the plays to beat better teams. Bad teams keep bad opponents in games. They had chance after chance tonight to go win the game instead they turned the ball over, committed stupid fouls, and couldn’t hit wide open shots. Folks at this point this is a bad team.

Mack better start Faulkner and Ellis the rest of the season. It is their only chance.

I agree they are limited but late the game someone set up Locke and Cross with really good looks. They missed all 3.
You are absolutely right. So it is possible but they don't do it nearly enough for me throughout the game.

we had our chances to win. just couldn't hit the 3 pointers. i would like to see Ellis start. he's the future next year since West and Faulkner will be gone. Curry looks good too. very good hands. easy to pass the ball to him.

I was referring to throughout a game setting up bigs for looks at the rim and running a fluid offense in general.

West is a nice defensive guard that is extremely limited offensively in all facets. He is just not UofL level starting material. Neither is Locke.

Hard to believe that Louisville is starting West and Locke at guard. Siva and Smith they are not.

Mack made adjustments in the second half. He actually threw in a zone in the first. I'm glad to see him make adjustments just wish it would happen earlier when getting torched.

That said, Cards had a chance to win but just couldn't make wide open 3s among other things.

There won’t be any post season if we don’t win these games. We play only a couple teams that can help our cause. And we’re not going to beat Duke, UNC, or Miami. And we have zero guarantee wins on our schedule. We may not improve fast enough to make the tournament.

BL: Live by the three die by the three.

Also, if you don't play defense well you get taken to the well....and beaten. Badly. Especially on the road.

They don’t have anyone when West and Locke are on the floor together. That is why they get off to terrible starts. Those 2 can’t play together. Then you add in Dre Davis that is 3 guys that can’t create anything.

I think Mack is figuring it out and in fairness Ellis and Faulkner weren’t ready until the last 2 weeks.

He completely missed on Locke and West. Neither are good enough athletes to play his style offensively or defensively.

Which is why Cross left, his playing time was going to get cut.
Cross is fine but athletically limited. Now if he continues to really struggle from 3 then his value is greatly diminished. Sad to say but Ellis is the only player that reminds you of past Louisville teams. They used the have 5 guys that were athletic freaks. Now they have 1. The best player is always on the other team.

It will be interesting to see if lineup change (s) will be made. He has shown he isn't afraid to mix the lineup.

Only chance Cards have is to be clicking from 3, and they are firing blanks tonight at fairly high volume.
This is kinda what bothers me Hop. When someone is having a night, like say Ellis was the other night, the other guys have to know it and get him every shot they can.
Now,on the other hand, when it's not your night shooting it,know that too. Instead of continuing to chuck up misses, shot fake and put it on the floor. It's a more advanced learning of the game that some guys have to figure out to become better basketball players.

By all means,if they're there and you are hitting them, then keep taking them. If you're cold, try to get to the free throw line by shot faking it and drawing the defense. There's just no mindset of our guys to make a play for somebody else if you're not having a good night shooting it.
They are absolutely in love with the 3. In a one loss and out scenario like the Big Dance,it doesn't bode well that guys won't make that adjustment.
