Geron Christian tears MCL (or maybe ACL) - Skins place him on IR

Louisville rookie Geron Christian got placed on IR today, with a season ending knee injury. The Skins have had a rash of O Line injuries which forced Christian into earlier than expected playing time. Looks like the NFC East leading Skins will have to find help off the street. A very tough spot for former Louisville player and now head coach Jay Gruden ... he really needs this season to stay off the hot seat. Hoping he can keep the train moving down the tracks.

The Monday After: Jeff Brohm's the obvious choice at Louisville, but he's another costly move

From Tom Fornelli at CBS:

"When the news broke Sunday morning that Louisville coach Bobby Petrino had been fired, there were two very different reactions. In Louisville, there was mostly relief. Roughly 180 miles north on I-65, however, there was fear -- fear that the man who just showed up to West Lafayette, Indiana, last year and had immediately revived a moribund program would soon be on his way out of town.

Jeff Brohm is the obvious choice for Louisville. He had been since before Louisville fired Petrino. Brohm, the Louisville native, the Louisville alum, and the former Louisville assistant, will be new athletic director Vince Tyra's first choice to replace Petrino. He'll likely be the second and third choice as well. It's an idea that makes too much sense, like when former Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh returned to the Wolverines, or when former Nebraska quarterback Scott Frost returned to the Cornhuskers.

Brohm returning to Louisville seems like fate, and in some eyes, an inevitability. But it might not be as simple or straightforward as it looks.

To describe the last few years in Louisville's athletic department as tumultuous would be accurate, but also a bit of an understatement. Rick Pitino, who won an NCAA title and went to three Final Fours, was fired amidst an NCAA scandal. Former athletic director Tom Jurich, who helped take Louisville from Conference USA to the ACC and helped create one of the strongest athletic departments in the country, soon followed. Then there was the school disassociating itself from a longtime booster and trustee "Papa" John Schnatter. Petrino's dismissal is the final step in completely overhauling the department, and Brohm -- along with new basketball coach Chris Mack -- will be seen as the coach to lead it into a new era.

But it won't be a cheap era. Louisville didn't just fire Petrino, it bought him out for $14 million. That is not an insignificant amount of money, and that price is one reason why some at the school bristled at the idea of firing him in the first place. Jurich received $4.5 million when he was bought out. The school has also spent money to renovate Cardinal Stadium. Now, after spending all that money to create the job opening, Louisville will have to pay more to get Brohm.

Brohm is currently making $3.8 million a year at Purdue, according to USA Today. That's slightly less than what Petrino had been making, so we know Louisville is willing to spend that kind of money on its football coach. The problem is that if Louisville wants to but Brohm out of his current deal, it would cost them an additional $4.4 million to do so before Dec. 5, 2018. The good news is that number drops to $3.3 million on Dec. 6, but even at the "discount," if Brohm signs a five-year deal worth roughly $4 million per year (which would be a family discount), the act of going from Petrino to Brohm will leave Louisville with a $37.3 million bill. And that doesn't even include the money for Brohm's assistants and money that must be paid to settle a loan as part of Brohm's contract.

That's a lot to spend for a school that's already spent a lot of money.

Still, you have to think it's a cost Louisville is willing to pay. No offense to other possible candidates out there, but I have a hard time believing the school decided to pay Petrino $14 million to go away so it could settle for Plan B or Plan C. That's just the price of doing business in amateur athletics these days."

Apparently Donna Brohm thinks Jeff will come home

A high ranking poster on the 247 board said that he spoke with Donna at some church thing or something and said that she told him "if they put in effort he shouldn't be hard to get I miss my grandkids." and another longtime poster is claiming they heard the same from a source very close to Jeff.

Tuesday Louisville football insider news and notes

With so much going on I wanted to condense some fairly short nuggets into one post just to keep you all as updated as possible on what is going on.

- Louisville had their first practice yesterday in the post-Petrino era and while it was very short, I heard from several people that there was a noticeable difference in the energy level of the team. Another thing I heard mentioned was that there was a "very new feel" to the team. It's hard to say if these things will transfer over to the field on Saturday, but I'd be shocked if there wasn't at least a little boost in the absence of Petrino.

- Pete Nochta & Richard Owens have done an excellent job recruiting for Louisville during/after Stephen Field and Cort Dennison led the Louisville recruiting efforts the past couple years. Since they are both in recruiting roles (although Owens is the fill-in tight ends coach too) it will be interesting to see if Jeff Brohm (or whoever the coach is) decides to retain them on staff. From what I've heard, both Pete and Richard were calling the commitments along with Vince Tyra as a group and talking to them which would at least entertain the possibility of Pete and Richard being retained.

- I reached out to 3-star OT Tanner Bowles to see if he would be reconsider his commitment to Alabama if Brohm ended up at Louisville. In his words, "That would be an awesome move for him but I wouldn't have any intentions in opening recruiting. I am 100% committed."

- I reached out to former Louisville DL commit Kristian Varner and said if Brohm comes to Louisville he would indeed be open to Louisville as a potential destination.

- In talking with Jaden Johnson, he reiterated that he is "100% committed to the program and Vince Tyra is making sure that he gets all of us commits there on campus for next season." He did mention that all commits seem to be on the same page in just trying to figure out who the next coach will be but that some of them are weighing their options right now. All in all, pretty standard for a coaching change. In fact, as I mentioned on Howie's show on 790 yesterday, the firing of Petrino goes against what one generally expects of a recruiting class when a coach leaves. At least until this point, there has been more decommitments while Petrino's time was ticking down then there were after he was fired.

- I had reached out to Corey Reed as there were rumblings about the possibility of him transferring and he told me that he doesn't plan on going anywhere. He also said "the team is ready to come back next year and prove the world wrong." Reed is redshirting this year and is a wide receiver going forward (he worked some at safety too). I am shocked Reed didn't play this year because he looked like he could really be a factor in limited time during the 2017 season. Chalk this up as another question of what happened with Petrino at the helm.

- I reached out to former Louisville commit and current Kentucky commit Demontae Crumes to see if he would reconsider his commitment if Brohm comes to Louisville but he said that he would not.

** Quick Hits: Monday, Nov. 12 edition **

- I have a TON of thoughts on how it went so wrong so quickly this season, but here are 10 reasons as compiled by several sources - both players and non-players:

1. There was SO MUCH build up before the Alabama game and the coaches preached "we can beat these guys" and then the team got on the field and realized that wasn't true at all.

2. There was so much build up of Puma Pass during the off-season that some players (who saw how he was really performing in practices) began to question what the coaching staff was seeing/sharing with the media.

3. The QB shuffle in the first three games made the coaching staff appear indecisive or unsure.

4. Once the trust began to erode in the coaches, the FSU game and the end of that game pushed the trust level further downward.

5. Players felt their concerns were not being heard and they were either shouted down or ignored when brought to Ops and some position coaches may not have handled expressed concerns in the best manner.

6. Once the losing started, every slight is magnified and the nepotism issue became bigger with each loss, specifically among the players who may have started wondering if their coaches were qualified given how much they saw about the topic in media and on social media, etc...

7. Once the mistrust built and the coaching staff continued to preach unity, the players buy-in suffered. A team that isn't bought-in is sunk.

8. The schedule is literally the toughest Louisville has faced - and a young, not bought in team playing a tough schedule is a recipe for disaster.

9. Players started questioning playing time allocation and why major roles with poor performance were not remedied.

10. After the BYE Week, when players and others around the program thought things were going to get better, they immediately got worse. The despair and dysfunction in the complex deepened beyond immediate repair and thus, the transfers and results the last two weeks.

- Players and Coaches and parents I have heard from have been SHOCKED that it got this bad this quickly. I would note that difference between the bottom of the league and the No. 2 spot (Clemson is in another league right now), is not actually very far. A huge gap in terms of wins, but not a huge gap in terms of actual talent.

- I maintain Louisville is NOT five touchdowns worse than Syracuse. The quitting and dysfunction took over the last two weeks, which is why Tyra stepped in and stopped the fight.

- And more that aren't as crucial, but certainly didn't help the coaching staff curry favor:
1. The practice of banning fans and media on twitter through the use of BLOCK (which is a very public eff you) rather than MUTE (which can happen without anyone knowing), was a critical error by Wagner/Petrino. It gave the impression that Petrino was angry with fans and media when that may not have been the case.

1a. The Twitter block was used as a way of communicating instead of just picking up the phone and calling someone. Several prominent people who cover the program daily (including me, Jody, Mike, Mark Ennis, Mark Blankenbaker and others) were blocked by Petrino's account. Some would be later reinstated after we'd come calling to the Football office for explanation and conversation.

2. The practice of constantly omitting players from the Monday press conference made Petrino the only voice we heard for 6 straight weeks, dehumanizing the team to the average fan. No players, no reminder that these are actual unpaid kids who are trying and failing. There were other press availabilities, sure, but those don't get near the press coverage the Monday pressers do.

3. The secrecy and closed off behavior of the coaching staff for practices and even Spring ball, gave the impression they didn't want anyone around. Not good when you need fans/media to later have your back during struggles.

Couple of quick coaching search tidbits:
- Brohm is absolutely the clear favorite and things have been in the works for a while. Not a done deal, certainly, but the notion that nothing has happened between Louisville and Brohm yet is not completely true. Nothing official has happened.

- There is a strong support for Dino Babers among UofL staffers if Brohm isn't available or attainable. There are many other coaching possibilities, but Babers seems to have buzz.

- I left Charlie Strong off of my HOT BOARD, but added him after a conversation where someone who has more access than me asked why he wasn't on there.

Sounds like the vibe is good with the football team now

It sounds like a cloud has been lifted at the football complex. Guys are happy -- coaches are happy.

I sure hope that translates on the field these last two weeks -- better effort; better execution; maybe find the "fun" in the game again.

Maybe ... just maybe ... we can win one for the ZIPPer. :D:D:D Couldn't resist.
