Former players

Great questions Koz, unfortunately the answers are hard to obtain.

Here is my response, regrettably UL has clearly been left behind in terms of talent. Look at what other schools like Oklahoma, TCU, UK, NCST are doing, not to mention LSU, USC Jr., and ND!

ND is the best example; they were able to retain Citron, Westbeld and King from their Freshman time to Senior season, while adding super freshman Olivia Miles and Hannah Hidalgo.

If UL had been able to retain HVL, Verhulst and Walker, along with Curry; I believe that Roberts, Randolph, Arenas and others could have contributed to a much higher level of success. Cochran, Russell and Harris failed to meet earlier expectations, some of which was a result of missing a supporting cast.

UofL Players Into Portal

Legally all these players are independent contractors. Until they figure a way to legally bind them to a school this isn’t changing. Once a contract can withstand the legal process then things like buyouts, transfer fees, caps and multi year can be implemented. Until then players can move freely in the system because of their independent contractor status.

The entire problem is the NCAA has no interest in making their athletes employees. I don’t see another way around. The athletes in football and basketball frankly shouldn’t want their status changed. They are benefiting greatly by freedom of movement.

Louisville vs TCU

Out of this last year’s highly rated freshman class, I am afraid there were more misses (no pun intended) than hits, and unfortunately it follows a recent trend that we experienced with both Olivia Cochran and Nyla Harris …….. not quite living up to their respective 5 and 4 Star HS ranking.

Arenas is one who did not play much, but there were instances where she displayed some of the projected talent that brought her to UL. She is one that did not surprise when announcing her plans to transfer, and I am afraid that she may turn out to be the next Verhulst, in terms of being a major contributor elsewhere.

BB RECRUITING: 2025 Transfer Portal

The number of players in the portal makes it challenging. They appear to have a good process to find what they want.

Who knows but Hadley is the one I think will test the market especially if Ament commits. That would give them flexibility go get another big, if he stays great.

Then I would load up on shooters. 2 proven guys that are athletic enough to defend. They can’t miss on these 2 guys. The other 3 find young guys at lower levels that fit their profile that are team players understanding they may be limited this year but more prominent next year. The kid for Oldham County would be along that line of thinking.

Roster so far

Scott, 6'11
Khalifa, 6'11
Pryor, 6'10
Fru, 6'10
Rooths, 6'8
Hadley, 6'6
Brown, 6'4
Rogers, 6'3

With only 8 players, it's clear Kelsey needs guards and a wing. The front court is tall and five deep.

With five schollys available, Kelsey is probably looking to get 3 guards and two wings.

Now this assumes no one else leaves after Johnson. Depending on how good the transfers are, next season could be a final 4 team. I wouldn't think another year of injuries will derail the team but if there's an injury or two, the roster is deep enough to cover it.

Will we see another Hepburn, Smith or Edwards with these transfers? Or will they be more role players? Will Ament sign giving Kelsey two of the best freshmen in the land?

The possibility of a deep and talented roster playing hard with a above average hoops IQ is very likely. Next season there will be no 8 seed with 27+wins.

Former players

HVL with TCU, Peyton Verhulst with Oklahoma and Zyanna Walker with Kansas State are all former players at Louisville. They are all starters for their respective schools and all 3 are still in the tournament. I remember when Louisville was a regular in the top 25 recruiting cycle but not lately.

Right now there are 4 schools in the ACC that have incoming recruiting classes ranked in the top 25. I know several of us have raised the question why has our recruiting dropped so far off? Did we lose our best recruiters when some of the coaches left for other schools. Could it be not enough NIL money? I really wish someone in the program would address this and let the fan base know.

I don’t think it is because of CJW because I think he is one of the best Head Coaches in the country. However something has drastically changed and hopefully we can make up ground in the portal if not we are going to struggle worse next year.

Nyla Harris Transfer Portal

Last year I attended a season ticket holders Coach walz radio show. The crowd was asking questions about recruiting players during commercials. He alluded to a top player that wanted to come to Louisville but apparently another other school offered her more money he could not match. There is more to the fortune of Louisville basketball than what Coach Walz is or in not doing in the way of recruiting.
No doubt. MANY players are making decisions based on getting paid
