Terry Rozier Being Investigated

it's interesting, there was an original investigation that found nothing now fbi investigating. from cbsports
Miami Heat point guard Terry Rozier is under federal investigation as part of a wider government probe into a sports gambling ring, according to The Wall Street Journal. The investigation is centered around a game between the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans on March 23, 2023 that included unusual betting activity surrounding prop bets against Rozier's statistics. Authorities believe some of the people involved in the Jontay Porter betting scandal may have had inside information that compelled them to bet against Rozier.

In that game nearly two years ago, Rozier played only nine minutes and 34 seconds. He finished with five points, four rebounds and two assists. He was not listed on the injury report before the game, but he did not play again for the Hornets during the 2022-23 season afterward. When he left the game, the Hornets called him doubtful to return with right foot discomfort. He was listed with that injury for the remainder of the season.

Rozier has not been charged with a crime or accused of wrongdoing. The NBA was made aware of the situation at the time, but found no violations.

"In March 2023, the NBA was alerted to unusual betting activity related to Terry Rozier's performance in a game between Charlotte and New Orleans," NBA spokesman Mike Bass said. "The league conducted an investigation and did not find a violation of NBA rules. We are now aware of an investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York related to this matter and have been cooperating with that investigation."

Rozier, who was traded to the Heat last January and has played 41 games for Miami this season, has thus far declined to comment.

U.S. Integrity, a private organization that monitors the betting world for improprieties, noticed unusual betting patterns before the game and informed sports books and the NBA. Some sports books chose to take Rozier's props down afterward. At least one bettor claimed publicly to have had inside information which led to him betting on Rozier to finish with fewer than 6.5 assists in the game.

Porter was banned from the NBA for life last year for his involvement in a gambling scandal, and he has since plead guilty to wire fraud conspiracy. Though both he and Rozier played in the NBA, their circumstances are quite different. Porter was a two-way player without a long-term contract. Rozier is in the middle of a $96 million contract. Sportsbooks have stopped offering prop bets on low-minute players like Porter in the wake of his scandal, but Rozier is a longtime NBA starter, so that change would not apply to him.

In addition to Rozier, the government investigation is reportedly also exploring this gambling ring's activities related to college basketball and potential point-shaving. Six total men have been charged in the Porter scandal, with four, including Porter, already pleading guilty.

Appreciate the comprehensive report above; most informative. If it takes two years before the FBI initiates its investigation, it generally means someone must have volunteered credible testimony from a related investigation. Terry had better have already engaged a really good lawyer, because most targets are more vulnerable to the 5 years in a Federal Prison for “Lying to the FBI”, than the original charge. A good lawyer will encourage Terry to refuse the request for an interview with the Feds, if it is not too late.

i'm trying to figure out the betting angle, on one side there were bettors who were pissed off who had TR bets with full game Overs on his stats and they complained and saved screenshots because they lost on every bet as TR only played 1 quarter and thus did not reach normal stat lines. so to this group, they're simply pissed because they lost with TR removed from the game. Now Tr was not on the pre-game injury report then he pulls himself in the first quarter and subsequently does not play the final 6 games. Did he know he was hurt but not tell anyone on the team then pull out of the game intentionally after one quarter knowing what he did was essentially true, he just didn't tell the team which is against league rules to hide injuries. so these bettors would be pissed if TR had an undisclosed injury that would have made them not take on those bets. this side is pissed they lost and don't believe the reason why.

now you have the fixer bettors sides, maybe a group of people where TR had an acquaintance and he told someone he's got an injury but hasn't let the team know yet, and that someone says that info could be useful. TR doing nothing wrong, just play and use the injury to leave the game. nothing major, he's injured but just going to wait a few extra hours before it's known. So these bettors now bet the unders within their parlays hoping to cash in. to TR, he really didn't fix a game or points or bets, he played until his injury was too bad to play and stopped. it's BS of course, but a rationalization to be used in court as a defense. maybe he was just sore and thought he could play thru it, give it his best but he couldn't.

now it's this group of bettors who won that i believe is connected to the michael porter ring and like 2330859 said ^^^^^, someone volunteered info for a reduced sentence and it came up they knew about TR bets, whereas the nba never had this kind of access to the ring so their investigation simply showed TR get injured and since he was out the rest of the year and not and on/off thing, seems reasonable he really was injured. Porter did for multiple games and intentionally got injured so as to not hit the Overs, whereas TR may have simply withheld his injury for a extended time frame but his injury was real whereas porter's were faked. but these bettors cashed and the losing bettors cried foul but nothing came of it until fbi got new info somehow.

either way, the NBA hates this attention and why Silver probably brought up reducing to 40 minute games during SB week as mostly pundits talking about the 40 minutes and not gambling rings. but imho, TR will probably slide unless text messages appear corroborating. the fact he sat out the final six games injured gives enough wiggle room to warrant reasonable doubt and thus no punishment. but if the g-men have texts showing he was connected in anyway, down goes Rozier, down goes Rozier (little play on words of of Frazier being KO'd by Ali)

Lying to the FBI. What a joke. They have totally lost their “holier than thou” crown.

Good thing there not a charge of “Lying to the American People”

Because most of Congress would be in jail.
