Statement from Dr. James Ramsey on Governor Bevin’s budget
We have recognized for some time the significant challenges Governor Bevin would face in preparing a biennial budget. The structural imbalance the state faces over the next two years requires the most austere of times.
We applaud the Governor for addressing the budget’s structural imbalance, understanding the importance of this to the long-term future of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
We applaud the Governor for his commitment to K-12 education and for ensuring Kentucky lottery proceeds are spent on student financial aid consistent with the Kentucky revised statutes.
We are disappointed we will take continued cuts in the next biennium as well as a current year cut (over the next 30 months). The challenges we face in continuing to move forward to meet our statutory mandate, given sixteen budget cuts over seventeen years, have and will take a toll on our ability to move forward.
The University of Louisville developed seven strategies for moving forward in a tough fiscal environment and these strategies will continue to help buffer, but cannot relieve the entire pain that continued cuts impose.
We appreciate the Governor’s willingness to help us manage these cuts over the next 30 months. We look forward to working with the Governor on a performance funding model that recognizes the amazing academic trajectory the University of Louisville has been on for over a decade and how funds can be appropriated to support that continued trajectory in the future.
