It was Kendall Smith, delivering a two-run single with one out in the bottom of the seventh -- giving the University of Louisville softball team to a 5-4 win over Virginia in the opening game of an ACC series Friday evening at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cards went into the home half of the seventh still trailing 4-3 when Carmyn Greenwood led off with a single and freshman Korbe Otis followed with a walk. Both runners moved on a Taylor Roby groundout to set up Smith's walk-off hit
Roby (14-7) went the distance in the circle to pick up the win for Louisville, now (25-12, 9-10 ACC).
It was a game of back and forth lead changes.
After Virginia took a 2-0 lead in the second, UofL responded with three runs in the third. Junior Jenna Servi got the offense started with a leadoff triple and graduate senior Greenwood followed with an RBI single. Two outs later, Smith connected on double to bring home Greenwood and then scored on senior Hannah File's double to put Louisville on top 3-2.
UVA bounced back, though, with a pair of runs in the fifth behind Katie Goldberg's two-run triple to regain the lead at 4-3.
The two squads resume the series today at 4 p.m. in an ACC Network televised game. Prior to the game, Louisville will honor the graduating senior class of Rebecca Chung, Carmyn Greenwood, Cassady Greenwood, Payton Hudson and Kendall Smith
