Ryan McMahon has played in 3 games versus UK, here are his career totals over those 3 games:

Minutes: 61

Field Goals: 1-13 (7.6%)

3PT Field Goals: 1-9 (11.1%)

Free Throws: 5-6 (83.3%)

Points: 8

I’m no mind reader but I’m gonna go out on an extremely huge limb here and guess that the OP is saying McMahon chokes against our in state rival.

Wild guess.

I've thought Ryan makes for a great spark off the bench who can catch fire at any time and give the team a major lift when that's happening. A guy that can knock down shots and can hit FTs. A guy that does understand what the team needs done to play winning basketball.

But, it's fair to ask if he warrants consistent starters minutes.

Ryan is limited in what he can do. We all know this. I would've loved for his final game against Uk to have a storybook ending with him nailing 7 threes in a blowout win but it was not to be.

He will be overmatched in other games too. But I also don't forget the big plays he has made in other games either. He powered the team to beat a good Michigan State team last year, got a clutch steal and shot against IU, and has made other big time plays in his career here.

As long as he's here we'll have to deal with his limitations and occasional heroics.

Agree. He’s a guy who flourishes when guys like Nwora are and Enoch are kicking butt. He was pressing against more athletic guys. Not surprising,.

Hell, maybe he wants to beat those a-holes as much as we do.

Our overall guard play will be what keeps this team from reaching their peak.

Maxey, quickley, hagans 53pts

Perry, ryan, kimble 21pts

Hard to overvome that backcourt deficit. You go no where without gaurdplay.

Points come and go. He has a cerebral game but the scouting report is out on him and opposing coaches are going to go right at him on the defensive end of the court.

We can’t have a mid-major level talent be playing big minutes. He can be a role player off the bench, but he can’t be our starting 2 guard.

But here’s the issue, who else is there to go to right now? Fresh has been inconsistent, let’s see where he goes from here. Darius and Sam are non existent on offense. DJ maybe, but then again he’s a freshman that missed the entire pre season with an injury and it’s unfair to just assume he’s going to come in and be ready for ACC play. Maybe he will? But you can’t count on freshman.

Ryan is the only guard that can shoot. But like today showed, he can’t cut it against the big boys when he has to play hard on both ends against more athletic players. But if he’s the best option right now, maybe we are stuck with playing him.

I guess I just don’t understand a thread with the intention of singling out a player who didn’t play his best but certainly wasn’t the reason we didn’t win this game. Hell, why not start a thread about Nwora? Oops, our fans probably will. If he scores half his average, we probably win. Or how soft Malik played against Richards. He’s not a center, he’s a stretch 4.

It's a message board to discuss the team, and the players on it. When the team wins, people single out players then also, as well as the coach.

As long as it doesn't cross a line with vulgarity or over the top criticism what's the problem with talking about individuals? Nobody said yank his scholarship or make him walk home from Lexington with no shoes.

Some of your examples are legitimate discussion topics maybe I'm missing something - Why do you think discussing players on a sports message board is out of bounds?

It is a solid observation. He hasn’t played very good in this game. It is a bad matchup for him. Anyone with athletic guards gives him problems because they take away the 3pt shot. The force him to create. Then when he is on defense he isn’t going to be able to stop good offensive players or more athletic players.

He needs to play but he can’t play 30 minutes.

I don't recall UofL fans being vulgar about any of our players. I guarantee they will hear some vulgar when they review the film of that game. I really try to keep perspective they are young men(boys) in a huge body trying to win a BB GAME at Uglyville Arena.
He!!s bells, I wouldn't step foot in that arena as a fan.

You must have missed my post about swopshire and the jack ass clown coach who kept playing him

As far as I know only the coach controls playing minutes. You don’t think Mack knows how many minutes the players are getting? How many of you attend practice or are better qualified to coach. Wow, I guess the honeymoon is over...

My issue was that Ryan has started every game. We were 11-1 going in. If I’m not mistaken he’s been a big part of it. Now it’s we’re not going anywhere with him starting. That’s a coaching issue, I think. Plus there are some posts saying he’s not even a D1 player, which does infer he doesn’t deserve his scholarship.

nc, tomorrow will be a better day! Let's hope Monday brightens our woe is me.

Nobody has said this. This is a straw man argument you are making.

A poster stated he was a mid-major talent, but that's not close to saying "he's not even a D1 player" I don't really even know if it means anything, since there are some mid-majors that are very good anyway.

Basically, people are saying he's been exposed by a couple of tougher teams on the schedule because.... he has. Then again, so have some other guys. Fair point!

The team did beat Michigan with him starting. But he wasn't very effective in that one either he was 1-8 from the floor. All the other wins are against inferior competition, so there weren't too many conclusions to really make in those games. The team is 11-1 or 10-2 heading into this game with just about any starting lineup.

I’ve only said he’s a Mid-Major level player. Now that’s not an insult. But he’s not an ACC level starting 2 guard. He can be our zone buster of the bench and provide a spark against a good matchup, but he’s not the player that wins a national title starting big minutes.

They may not have any better options. I don’t think Louisville is going to go very far in the tournament with him playing 30 minutes. I don’t need to attend practice to see how teams with really good guards play him. They are able to take away what he does best. Then on offense those same guards attack him.

It is just an observation.

Speaking of DJ, is he hurt? I don't recall him ever getting in the game.

They drape him like a blanket so he rarely has open looks. Good scouting on Cal's part.

I agree. Conference games are always more important. They just are.
Well if you’re in the OVC or MVC I’d say that’s true for seeding isn’t he conference tournament. But in a 68 team tournament, the games are almost the same.

The selection committee won’t say “well the FSU game is an ACC and the UK game is non-conference so it is completely meaningless and it will be completely disregarded”

The games all matter for seeding purposes come March.
