Before you start listening to our local media and making predictions off their sunshine pumping, keep in mind they convinced themselves and others that football was gonna be just fine. The hard truth with basketball is that our roster is not very good and we are gonna lose alot of games. I love the KP hire and think he will get us back to where we need to be in short order but it isn’t gonna be in ‘22-‘23.

Forget about the tournament this year. just hope the IARP thing works out ok and kids play hard

we have very little depth at Center or point guard. no double digit scorers returning. Mike James is coming off ACL injury.

it takes time to turn around a team that was at the bottom of the league in nearly all offensive categories, especially with sanctions possible.

Until the NCAA “Cloud” passes this program, it is totally unreasonable to expect our recruiting to rise beyond where it is now. KP will be fine as a recruiter, provided this NCAA Cloud ever evaporates.

I don't listen to a ton of local talk radio but I've not read, seen or heard a single person, writer, fan, radio personality, website etc even show a minor level of optimism in this years team. Quiet the opposite...the national media is downright mocking our roster. I would be shocked if any local radio guys mention anything more positive than "maybe they'll be better than we think" or "they'll look better than last year."

So I don't think our fan base will have any issue being overly excited or optimistic about this season.

National media is definitely scoffing at our roster. Local radio starting to delude themselves.

Sounds like bulletin board material, if there is still such a thing.

It easy to doubt on the Cards hoops chances as they have not been good for a while now. Way too many unanswered questions, but there's nothing unrealistic about those questions being answered in the positive. What if Withers gained the confidence to go along with his talent? What if Traynor plays so well no one can understand why Mack wouldn't play him? Both of these players were expected to be major players when they signed. What if Ellis has an all- ACC point guard season? What if James and Lands are so good fans are concerned they may go pro after this season? What if Curry is a total beast and a 1st team all ACC selection? What if BHH plays like the 5 star recruit he was when he was at Tennessee? What if Wheeler improves as much as Curry did?

Once the games start, if these players perform at a high level, Louisville will be the surprise team of the season. There's going to be issues with the depth and injuries could always derail the season, but the main 8 to 9 players were all recruited by big name programs and have the potential to be above average college basketball players. If KP can meld them into a competitive team, there is more than enough talent to win lots of games. We just haven't seen it yet.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm hoping for an NCAAT birth. Perhaps that is crazy, but I'm looking at the roster and if the guard situation is navigated properly I think there's some talent there.

My biggest concern is PG. Ellis is going to have to play 35 minutes a game. Having said that. I think this team could surprise some people. We played some good teams tough last year. But we also got blown out against teams like Syracuse that were not all that good. Last year's team had some bad apples that KP ran off. If this team plays for each other and not for themselves I think it will be a team a lot of Coaches won't want to play.
I think we will give most teams a good game. How many wins that adds up to I don't know.

I think if Hercy and Fabio can split 10-15 mins a game and be effective than that shouldn’t be a problem. Lands can also help out at point in a pinch

our schedule is out. very tough. very few easy opponents.

KP said we will playing at least 15 games against teams that made the tournament.
3 teams in the ACC are ranked in top 25. UNC, Duke, and Virginia.

looks like Isaiah Miranda is a Cardinal according to our Twitter page.
very big pickup. 7 ft center. #33 player in the country!

I guesss maybe I'm just an eternal optimist, but... Last year's team was 13-19, and I don't think any of the players who moved on are irreplaceable. Yeah, I hear all the talk about "we don't have any guards", but we had a lot of them last year without much success. I think El will be much better in a looser, more fast-break system. And I hear good things about Fabio, so I'm willing to wait, root 'em on and see what happens. I think last year's record is probably the floor for this team, but more than that I just want to see them compete each game, and I think we'll get that.

Depends on what media outlet it is. Maybin & Rummage are more of the sunshine guys. Luke takes a analytical common sense approach not too high or low his co host is a negative guy. Ethan Moore is just plain outrageous he is either expecting crazy outlandish results or totally hating. Eaves is a UL hater regardless even though Kp is his friend. Bobby V is just a wait and see guy. Blankenbaker is like Ethan .Deener is wishy washy never know which way he going . Sweeney is nothing but U of L negative takes who hypes up Streeble .

That’s a lot of what ifs! Especially on the positive side. But each of those “what ifs” has an evil twin brother that takes the negative approach. I wish I shared your enthusiasm but the last five years or so has turned me into a raving skeptic.

I didn't necessarily say all of those positive things would happen but enough of them to have a good season is plausible.

I do believe Ellis will be one of the better PG's in the ACC.

I do believe Curry will be a all conference selection.

I do believe Withers will have his best season since being a Cardinal.

I just can't know for sure on the new players having never seen them play.

If the three (3) aforementioned by Cycle meet his expectations, it will be a very good outcome for KP’s rookie season.

Amazes me how low we now set the bar across just about all of U of L athletics nowadays...

Since 2018, we have signed 18 high school seniors in men's basketball with an aggregate Rivals star rating of 3.89/5.00. We haven't won an NCAA game in that time frame.

Pitino's classes consistently averaged between 3-1/2 and 4 stars IIRC. If anyone questions that, I'll compile his numbers again.

We may be underperforming in basketball, but Rivals says it ain't because we haven't had kids who could play. The alleged "NCAA overhang" is just another excuse for a program not performing.

And if we're so serious about men's basketball, why don't we increase its budget by around 50% to where it was when we were winning games in the postseason?...

Not buying this at all.. Other schools under investigation seem to recruit ok..

I'm really concerned about KP. He was brought in as an unknown coaching commodity because he's never been a head coach. His selling point was as an ace recruiter.. I ain't seeing any of those skills yet.. Recruiting to ky ain't Recruiting to Louisville. Ky recruits for itself.

I'm all for giving him a chance but I hope he can coach better than we thought because his recruiting isn't living up to the hype..

I do believe that the NCAA cloud has a negative effect on us. We know that all or most competitors use negative recruiting and we’re an easy target in that respect.
On your second point, I couldn’t agree more. So far he really hasn’t delivered on his recruiting prowess and connections but time will tell how that actually plays out. I like his “let the players play” philosophy but let’s see what happens before we judge his coaching talent.

I want to see how KPs recruiting does after this NCAA crap is over with before I'm ready to fully evaluate it. For me, he gets credit for bringing in BHH, Ree, Fabio, and keeping Lands. His inability to bring in some more guards is a slight strike against him IMO.

But I also understand the circumstances too- he was hired late in the recruiting cycle, had to assemble a staff and gather his assistant coaches before he could even seriously begin recruiting, and is still waiting on IARP decision.

Now his in game coaching and preparation also matters a ton. So if we see his team come out looking woefully unprepared that will definitely be cause for concern.

Look, we all know what it really comes down to- winning.

CKP could recruit the best players but if he can't coach and has losing seasons I'll want him out of here just like Mack. But I'm willing to give him a fair chance and time to prove himself and, for me, that's more than just this upcoming season.

CR: Name another NCAA school that is, and uhas been under investigation for violations while already under NCAA penalties. I do not believe that we have been without talent, just not up to the level of UK, UVA, UNC, Duke, and arguably to FSU.

David Padgett arrived as “interim HC”, not the best scenario for recruiting. This cloud has been, and continues to handicap UL “as we speak”.

Its going to take a while before we return to the level we have enjoyed in the past.

Kansas

This so-called "NCAA cloud" has not impaired any of the named schools--recruiting or otherwise--as it has U of L.

Allegedly.

Which tells me there's a better explanation...

Pitino is in the HOF arguably one of the best coaches ever.

The HC's that followed him are not.

If we hired Jay Wright or Bill Self let's compare them to Pitino. Sure.

"NCAA overhang" (we'll just call it that) is a big f'n deal. In fact, the off court stuff is exactly why we didn't retain the HOF coach or get to hire a new HOF coach. It's why you have the HC you probably don't want. It ain't that hard to understand. We aren't where we are because they closed down Jim Porter's Z!

Or more to the point, how we handled it all. But there is no time machine to do it like Kansas. They retained their guy we shoulda done the same. But we didn't. Nobody posting here made these decisions.

Musical chairs as AD, who is the President. Hey when do we find out if the program gets banned and loses scholarships? Who knows.

I just can't understand why an up and coming HC doesn't want to risk their career by coaching here. Everything is great.

I suggest either not listening to local media or at least understanding they are coming from an angle of fanboys. Fanboy stuff is probably cool when things are going good. If there is a minor problem like the 7th man missed practice we can say well we are 12-2 and #8 in the country so we will just make him run laps.

But when we are a dumpster fire there's nothing they can really say to make us happy.

Avoid.

It's true that until the off court issues are in the rear view mirror, looking ahead to victory is a race we just can't win. So in the meantime, we had an average coach, with an average staff, with average players. It didn't go so well.

Now we go with a former Cards player to revitalize a once proud and prominent program. In his first game, we hit rock bottom. No time in the last 40 years has there been as bad a performance as the defeat to Lenoir Rhyne by 10 points.

Cards fans have been hoping and praying that the return to prominence would be sooner than later, but that looks like a pipe dream.

The five years in sanctions limbo has done its job.

I don't disagree with most of that. A major turnaround in any situation starts when you recognize the real problem.

9 times outta 10, people who care wanna hear that you understand that you're the problem--not others around you now and not people in your life many years ago.

There's not enough evidence IMO that U of L understands that. They arrogantly pi$$ed off too many people in the aftermath of Pitino, thinking they knew what they were doing. They obviously did not (know), and a large and alienated part of the fanbase needs to hear that mea culpa.

Otherwise, the road back will continue to be slow, costly, and maybe unsuccessful. And the more of that that happens, the more of it is on U of L. They're in charge of this train wreck...
