A very nice tuneup for Louisville women's basketball Thursday night, ad the Cards jumped out to an early 29-11 first quarter lead and never looked back in a resounding 74-point win over DII Union (TN) University.
Louisville was led by five players in double figures. Liz Dixon had 15 points, Chelsie Hall added 12, Hailey Van Lith contributed 11 and Payton Verhulst and Olivia Cochran ended up with 10 each. Walz played all 13 players dressed for the game, at least five minutes, and all scored except Ramani ParkerThe Cards shot 60% (42-70) from the floor and outrebounded the visitors 43-20.
Walz started Cochran, Robinson, Van Lith, Kianna Smith and Chelsie Hall. The four guard lineup keyed the strong first quarter start, it got even better for UofL. The Cards went on a 32-4 second quarter run that had them up 61-14 at the halftime break. Dixon had 13 of her 15 points in that first half and Louisville had a 40-0 edge in points-off-turnovers. Union had 22 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
The Cards continued the attack with a ton of different combinations in the third quarter and pushed the advantage to 86-23 at the end of three quarters. Walz had played everyone but Ramani Parker and Sydni Schetenan by then.
Walz ended the forth quarter with Parker, Russell, Schetenan, Verhulst and Ahlana Smith on the court and the Cards outscored Union 20-9 in the fourth quarter.
Hungry might be the best way to describe Louisville performance last night. Hungry to run, play defense, score and run the offense. Louisville committed just eight turnovers against the Bulldogs, created 31 total turnovers and had 18 steals.
A fun night for all (except Union) last night in the KFC YUM! Center. About 6600 were in attendance.
Walz on the team: "It was just a really good basketball game for us. We've still got some things to work on but I thought our defense was really good overall and I was pleased with the way most of our kids played."
Louisville returns to action and opens the regular season on Nov 12th, when they'll face Arizona in The Invitational at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, SD.
