The University of Louisville has added a walk-on to the basketball roster for the coming season, landing former St. John's walk-on Jay Henderson. The 6-foot-5 guard will likely arrive in Louisville next month and has four years of eligibility left.

Jay Henderson was a redshirt walk-on last season at St. John's and was hoping to get a scholarship this coming season from the Red Storm. But then Steve Lavin was fired and he was looking for a spot to land.

Well, Henderson has landed at the University of Louisville !!

The 6-foot-5 guard - a native of Orlando, Fla., confirmed to Cardinal Authority that he will enroll at U of L early next month and will become a walk-on with the Cardinals' for the coming season.

"My mentors from Team Take over called Kenny (Johnson) and coach (Rick) Pitino and then they called Steve Lavin," Henderson said. "It just all worked out. I'm very excited because I think it's the best place for me,"

Henderson will have four years of eligibility left and he's hoping to see some playing time.

"Coach Pitino told me there's playing time open with the guard spots if I come in and practice hard," Henderson said. "They have a whole new set of guys, so there's playing time available."

Henderson, whose father - Jay - played at Penn State, scored more than 1,000 points during his career at Lake Highland Prep in Orlando. He helped his team win back-to-back Class 4-A state titles in Florida.

During his high school career, Henderson had interest from Florida State, Purdue, Dayton and Seton Hall.

Henderson said he told coach Pitino and the Hall of Fame coach said, "he couldn't wait for me to get there and get to work with the guys. I love the atmosphere and really got a long with the players. I'm excited."

Another body at guard. Plus he grew one inch from 6'4" to 6'5" just during this article!

LOL, I thought maybe I was the only one that noticed that. Well played Sir!

Regarding this kid, he has good size to be a decent 2G and great size to be a point at 6'4" or 6'5". Hopefully he's a diamond in the rough type player and turns out to be a steal. Pitino has found a few of those over his coaching career.

Seriously....... the kid can play the wing and shooting guard ! Sorry that he doesn't meet your five star expectations but after all he's a walk on. And he wants to be at UofL !!

Happy to have him on board Cardiotonic. All players who want to be at UofL AND that the coaching staff wants on the roster are welcome as far as I'm concerned.

I agree I don't see anything negative about this addition, he is a walk on and it takes nothing from us. He could be a sleeper and turn into something really good, at the least he will be a body in practice and there is nothing wrong with that.

Just making a light-hearted jab at the typo in the article, Cardiotonic. I'm glad to have Jay aboard. I hope he can be the next Hendo and because Jay's last name is also Henderson it will fit perfectly. If he works hard and gives his all, then I'm sure he will see some playing time.

Comparing him to other walk-ons....from what Iv'e seen, he looks good. Length, speed, and not real skinny. Again, for a walk on, I think this is as good as you can expect to get. IF he stays for at least 3 years, I believe he has the potential to be the next "HENDO". And hey, if I'm wrong, and he's just no good....so what?
