Will he be a candidate for the HC job considering his background and his success at LPT this year? Makes sense to me, but I don't follow the coaching circles.

IMO that move would put LPT's little run this year in serious question. Stupes is still coaching the defense as well as he ever has. Their offense is where there's been improvement, and that could be as fleeting as their fourth OC in five years.

LPT Football: We're getting used to it...

I honestly had to google that dudes name to know who you're talking about, Cincinnati isn't hiring him to be a head coach.

Kentucky had its run this year due to its schedule, they played a very weak schedule for an SEC team...and they caught us right after Houston broke our spirit.

Cincinnati could get a guy like a Jeff Brohm, but it probably won't be him because he'll get a bigger job this year.

If Gran does move back to Cincy I think that just might speak volumes about the staff at uahkay.

It makes sense to me - sort of a poor man's version of what happened at auburn when malzhan left. Despite all the points - three straight bowl losses while he was at uc might reflect negatively on gran but, one year in and he's the best OC than stupes has had.

The early reports are Brohm and Neal Brown. Don't see JB leaving WKU for anything other than a P5 job.

Gran committed to 3 years min, and had UK commit to 3 years with pretty big buyout. He dislikes turnover AND being turned over. It would be beyond surprising if he considers any move before that time frame expires

Funny how the conversation has gone from hoping UK keeps all its coaches because they are forever gping to be Louisville's play toy to a discussion around us losing a coach in hopes of it halting uk's "little run this year". : )

We've been taking talking point notes from your football folks for the last five years. ;) Just wait until we win a game again in basketball. Get ready for such gems as, "We're back baby", "they've won their last game for a long time", "they're trending down, while we are trending up", and my personal favorite "we own them". :D

What a laughable take. Someone posts about wondering if gran will be in the mix for the uc job and your take is that UofL fans are "hoping" he leaves? Any desire to see him leave would be simply to continue to laugh at the instability of the yut staff.

Btw, your little run resulted from two walk off FGs - you probably shouldn't plan for those type of gifts in the future.

Well, I was quoting what the OP said about Gran leaving halting our run.

We played a fundamentally sound brand of football with a physical running game with 2 1000 yard rushers and a very good oline. And have 19 starters coming back next year so we are pretty content with where the current run is heading.

Pike where where you during the tough times? You completely left us . . . and you would win a bet on whether we appreciated and enjoyed your absence. But at any rate uahkay played well and won the game fair and square. And guess what, we'll show up for next year's game with a likely Heisman winner OR a Heisman candidate AGAIN. See you at CWS.

First off - ONE YEAR of >.500 football doesn't equate to a "run", to any fan base in the known world outside of yut nation.

Secondly, despite all of that "fundamentally sound football" played the 7-5 record was achieved in the weakest sec east in years, and as previously mentioned, only as a result of 2 lengthy walk off FGs. Despite either the kicker or punter being the best MVP of the yut team 3 out every 5 years, that will not happen every year.

Thirdly - hope you bought bowl tickets because next year will be back to business as usual for the yuts and their fans with having December off.

I don't get any Kentucky fan watching this team and thinking they've turned the corner. As bad as we've tanked, if lamar doesn't fumble we still win, MSU was horrible this year and lost on s career long fg as time ran out. If this was Kentuckys great turn around, I appreciate them being our rival even more. They are proud to be known as mediocre.

hahahahahahahahah I don't see anywhere where anyone was hoping he would leave. I didn't even know who he was until I opened this thread and started reading them. God you guys get a lucky win against a disinterested cards team once every five years and you would think you clowns are competing for the title.

Nobody is coming for your coaches...ever. They usually get fired and become coordinators somewhere. Since gran is a coordinator already, if UK traditions hold true, he will be a water boy at Southern Miss in two years.

As much as I would like to agree with you, I can't. I think most on this board need to take the blinders off and acknowledge that Stoops actually has their program heading in the right direction. If we were returning 19 starters, we would be toughting ACC championships and Final 4 for next season.

They are better than they have been, however the two plays that I mentioned are why they are bowl eligible. I'm not saying that they haven't improved, but they are still one of the worst defenses that we saw all season. Kudos to them for beating us and making a bowl game.

Signed, Southern Miss.

The SEC east wont stay down forever. They will be back in their pecking order next year. They have reached their max this year and that is mid/low tier bowl game..simple as that.

Mark this down... As the OP source, I understand the slapd!cks's perspective.

The LPT offense has clearly been where most of their improvement has taken place. My point was simply remove that, and what are you left with? The same slappy football program.

Any "hoping" I do is that Stupes survives--and hey, doesn't THAT guy deserve another contract extension?

LPT Football: Can we easily switch their jobs?...

Dont worry gocds I've still been hanging around : ). And I'm a longstanding kentucky football fan, believe me, we are well accustomed to the tough times!
We were very fortunate to have out QB play by far his best game aND well beyond what we thought possible. Also very fortunate to slow Jackson down just enough. No one's goING to stop that guy very often.
Long suffering UK fans are very optimistic about next year's team. But we'll probably have to bring our A game again to beat a Jackson led UL again. Should be fun

By definition 'long suffering fans' are always optimistic - it's what makes them long suffering.

Doubt next year will be "fun" for yut fans.

I think the "I hope UK keeps Stoops because he can't develop talent and cant coach" mantra is going to get more and more disengenious over the next couple years. I guess it now turns into "Gran is the key, get rid of him and it goes to hell". Stoops is a good coach on a number of levels and a hell of a recruiter. We are more than happy to have him.
On the flip side, I've read for years how great a developer of talent and game coach Petrino is. And he definitly is. And Stoops can't do either. Should be interesting to see how that plays out. Stoops has definitely made his mistakes. But do you realize that Petrino is 5-10 against teams with winning records over the last 3 years? Does that bother you?

We are definitely confident for next year. 19 starters back helps. Still need help on the Dline and more depth.

But no reason we can't be even better and beat anyone we play. We haven't been able to say that for quite a while.
As far as being lucky against UL...we were lucky our QB played as well as he did and it's always a bit of luck to get turnovers. But we also had 580 yards of offense, 3 sacks to UL's none and played well enough to force a handful of punts. Our punter sucked by the way as he has most of the year so we won in spite if that as well. Despite what you might want, the talent between us is very similar at this point with the very large exception of Lamar Jackson.

I've seen enough of the Stupes' defense to know what he brings to the table. And he's now into his fifth recruiting class, so I'm not sure what a "couple more years" are gonna accomplish except to affirm that.

Your OC is the new kid in town, and that's where your improvement has been. He'll be in line for a HC job if that continues, and any assistant's contract and buyout he has won't be an issue. As long as Stupes remains in charge, I'm good.

Assuming your numbers are correct, Petrino is 4-5 against winning teams not named "Clemson" and "Florida State". U of L also beat four bowl teams this year, one of which is in a NY6 game. Sure, it can be better, but 9-3 was what I predicted for 2016 coming in, and I never move the goalposts.

LPT Football: We can't even see the goalposts...

So you go from being a title contender with a Heisman Trophy winning talent at QB to being OK with a 4-5 record against winning teams not named Fl st and clemson?

By the way...Kentucky beat 4 bowl teams this year as well. Including a,team that beat that NY6 team you mention by 40+ points : )

You also lost to Southern Miss and gave up 500 yards to New Mexico State. (Stupes' side of the ball again--give that guy a new contract!)

And I didn't predict a Heisman winner or a CFP berth. Like I said, I didn't move the goalposts. 9-3 means we have a shot at ten wins. I said before the season began that any year we win ten games is successful. That applies to this year, next year, ANY year.

He's got a handful of wins against 6-6 teams, the hair-splitting of 7-5 vs 6-6 to get your 5-10 against teams with winning records is rather hilarious.

Year one post Teddy he wins 9 games playing musical chairs at QB and gets a win in South Bend.

Year two he has a green team up and down year wins his bowl vs SEC team.

Year three he puts non-traditional power in playoff discussion for 3 months and it implodes late in the year. He produced the Heisman front runner. It can't be dismissed, how hard it is to play in the spotlight as sort of a black sheep to the conversation with the Heisman front runner too. Every game they play, under intense scrutiny locally and nationally. The team went through a lot and couldn't handle it in the end, and it's not their fault they weren't as good as advertised in the end.

We aren't "bothered" by Petrino's overall results, or any silly reach stat you can find in your goofy arguing points.

And we aren't bothered by the fact that you vanished into thin air during those first 3 months mentioned above, only to return shortly after the Cards loss to Houston. We are chuckling with you, or at you, however one wants to put it.

Bad look for you, but self-awareness has never been a strength of yours guy.

Exactly.

This thread is, as expected, off the rails. But you knew once you clicked "post thread" there would be screwball responses that drifted far off topic.

Just thought the Petrino record was an interesting statistic given he's roundly seen as a great coach who does more with less.

Cats football fans are a pretty self aware crew. We know when we suck and we know when we are getting better. 19 starters back for a young team that won the most SEC teams in 10 years and beat a very good UL team.
Bottom line, is O Coordinator aside, most Cats fans are very happy to have Stoops. If UL fans are happy we have him as well, that's all good too

Let's be just a little self aware here. Cat fans, like any other program, think they have gotten bigger, faster, and stronger ("getting better"), EVERY spring. As well as believe they have "turned the corner" multiple times after one good win. Most years, they have been wrong. Time will tell if you are correct, next year. The possibility IS there, just needs to be proven out.

Should stupes be able to build on this monumental 7-5 season into something better and sustained, then the "I hope (the yuts) keep stupes because he can't develop talent and can't coach" mantra might begin to be disingenuous.

Up to now, it's simply been accurate.

While we're taking a look at coaching records. Do you realize that stupes is 19-29 in his tenure with the yuts - including an 8-24 sec record? Do you realize that he has only 1 win against a P5 team with a winning record - and that came as a result of a GW FG? I guess credit where credit is due - he capitalized on the game that UofL gift wrapped and shoved down his pants.

Does that bother you? I know, I know - it's all joker's fault - lol.

Another pretty useless stat given that what - 80 teams are going to bowls? I mean we can agree cant' we, that you really have to be a complete dumpster fire, bottom dweller, conference welfare recipient type of program to not go to a bowl - right?

Then multiply that times 5 years in a row...

Pike there is a really cool website that I looked at that shows current coach's stats vs the T25. You will find many of the coaches have losing records. Petrino was sitting 4-5. It is not updated completely, so I am unsure as to how far behind the stats are.

Most Cats fans were unhappy the majority of the year with Stoops. He has certainly salvaged the season and regained support. I am not a fan that will let rooting interest cloud the reality. UK has established an offensive identity with running the football and IMO Snell JR will turn out to be one of the top RBs UK has had in the modern era. Now the program heads into an unchartered territory of expecting to crack T25 and compete for the SEC East. It could go either way, but decades of evidence say it will go one way, and not the other. I'm not closed minded, we will sit back and see what happens.

That said, you just disappeared after being a frequent poster here, and popped back in once our team started struggling - and that is rather crappy. It is true this thread invited any and all UK fans, but you have sort of hi-jacked the topic to evaluating the UofL coach when the OP was fishing for the UC HC wish list, and asking out loud if it would impact UK's offense. While it appears the guy is not a candidate, the topic ain't out of bounds considering the improvement in the UK offense under his watch.

Agreed. Difference between success and failure is very slim. No guarantee

Not my intention to high jack the thread. And I've still been around and put my two cents in from time to time when a thread pertained to UK and I could add a different perspective from one of your main rivals. There just hasn't been many topics pertaining to UK over the course of the year given your boards focus on the playoffs, heisman, etc. AnD rightfully so.

As far as the original topic at hand around the prospect of Gran leaving having a debilitating effect going forward and the tangential topic of Petrinos success...I think they go hand in hand based on numerous theads over the years since Stoops and Petrino have been at the two schools. I've read in heregards many many times that Stoops is not a good coach, can't develop talert, can't manage a game and UL will forever dominate us as long as he is in place. The OP has been one of them mis the vocal with that premise. I argued in the past that althought Stoops has definitely had his growing pains as a head coach he is clearly some one who's past successes with players, defenses doesn't jive with the concrete mindset that he is destined to fail and is the next Krag or Joker. Which was never the case to UK fans that knew football and paid attention to the progress.

On the flip side, the overwhelming thought process of this board and from the OP had beenough that Petrino will forever succeed....which based on his history of winning isn't that unrealistic. That he was a superior developer of players and play caller. These traits are seen to overshadow his mediocre recruiting chops and general prickly personality. With the recent losses and lack of success in the Oline specifically, I have seen that mindset challenged by some. With that I threw my two cents in aboit two preexisting schools of thought about the two coaches.
Success at UK has definitely been hard to achieve and even harder to maintain. It will be very interesting to see if Stoops formula is different from the past and sustainable. We are hopeful it is mainly because of the greater sustained success in attracting the Jimmies and the Joes. On the flip side, it will be equally interesting to see how Petrino fares longer term when he is playing year in and out with his own recruits in a power 5 conference. Those were my underlying points

Along with the typical LPT hope, there is zero evidence explaining a better year other than your new OC. Not recruiting, not your defense. OK, maybe your FG kicker.

At that's why I inquired whether Gran was getting any publicity because I think he deserves it. Beyond him, I hope LPT keeps all of its coaches and players.

LPT Football: We usually lose the wrong guys...

It's always great to get the "sky is falling" outlook on our program from the sunshine pumping rival. Really, good stuff. Thanks for the read Pike. I guess we'll just give credit to players like Jaire Alexander, Lamar Jackson, Cole Hikutini, and Seth Dawkins to the Cardinal Bird.

Take care.

That's the position today. Got it. I do seem to recall statements before the season started that we had just hired our 3rd OC in 4 years and Gran was the net in line to fail.

Personally I think it's much more plausible that our young players were ready to step up this year, like 5 returning starters on Oline with 3 or more years in the program. Finding a stud RB (through talent evaluation) and moving on from Towles at QB...thank you jesus.
And by the way, our defense was much more fundamentaly sound with better player management AFTER Stoops took control of play calling in the third game. We held almost every team under there yearly average in scoring, including UL, after he took over. I do definitely agree we were a train wreck with the DC Elliot on control. He was in over his head. And oh yeah, 7 of the starters were Sophmores and we replaced 6 of our front 7 to start the year. Pretty realistic to expect some early growing pains.

All very very good players with NFL futures. I'm sure you'll continue to succeed. Just a,question of to what level? Like I said...will be fun to see how it unfolds. One thing is for certain, the dialogue has changed in this rivalry for most rational parties on both sides. Later

...Personally I think it's much more plausible that our young players were ready to step up this year, like 5 returning starters on Oline with 3 or more years in the program.
Change the names, and that's the same general crap you hear from optimistic LPT football fans EVERY year. It's gotta just be stupidity that keeps you believing it.

LPT Football: It's a fanbase prerequisite...
