Yesterday’s games had most of the talking heads moaning and groaning about how transfers totally changed these games, and that changes “had” to come. They were discussing one (1) springtime, after season, transfer period.

TV charges LOT of money for advertising in these games, and if viewership falls due to lousy, boring games? Well….

Money always wins, and TV has the money. Sure they have the whole regular season, but They will not give up 4-6 weeks of post season advertising for players benefit. They care less about the players than these “greedy” schools some speak of.

Somebody/thing has to get some kind of control over this, and the deepest pockets always win.

Time will tell. JMHO

PS:
The worst part of it so far to me?

As bad as the ACC is perceived now, these games are proving, so far, that our (acc) 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stringers aren’t as good as the other conferences.

There has to be more rules and restrictions. I have no idea what that looks like but it has to be done. You're right, with all the taking heads weighing in on it there will be a change sooner rather than later and TV is not going to be the loser..

I was going to make my own post to ask the group a question but if you don’t mind I will Segway my question from you. What was you guys reaction to hearing that George’s quarterback is opting out for the rest of the season. I know they said he was having surgery but do you think there was shenanigans going and he should’ve disclosed it before the final rankings? Or do you have think that with them winning the SEC it wouldn’t have mattered? Either way I think it is wild for a guy to opt out when you’re team has a shot at winning the National Championship.

Beck’s surgery provides one of the very few legitimate reasons for opting out; even with a 2nd string quarterback, they are favored over ND and quite capable of winning yet another NC.

The players better be careful. College athletes people can relate to them. The day fans lose a connection with players is the day people stop watching. The NBA is starting to lose viewers because the players aren’t connecting with fans. Fans spend a lot of money to see players play not sit on the sideline.

I think what Ward pulled will be the end of NFL kids playing in bowl games. Even if you have all the insurance in the world you just don’t pay the game the same way. For the love of God who is advising him. Don’t freaking play people understand that but to quit at halftime. Cam Ward doesn’t care what people say about him but he will get destroyed for the next week. If I am a GM hell no I am not spending a day one pick on a guy that quits at halftime. The most important position on the field.

How the NFL handles Ward in the draft will be fascinating. They could send a message but teams are that disciplined when picking QB’s.

The only way I see this ending if the NCAA requires the portal to be restricted to only a period in the summer. And that is done collectively through contracts and all NCAA schools are required to have student athletes under contract. And in those contracts it should stipulate that the season will be played in whole and the season includes bowl games. Other than contract some kid will sue to get what they want. And if it’s not required by all NCAA schools it won’t work.

I truly hope you are right CardFirst, if for no other reason than to preserve intercollegiate sports as we know it.

It looks like to me that Courts & Judges have jumped in front of the NCAA, rendering the schools ineffective in making the necessary changes. When the lawyers representing the student athletes filed the suit initially, the NCAA failed to aggressively mount an effective challenge, and could not make the case as to just how rewarding college scholarships, room and board were to those in school. It never argued how discriminating it would be to those teammates who would not be equally compensated to those playing a skill position. Losing that argument set the precedent that will be difficult to overcome.

After witnessing our own UL Legal Representation and the BoT performance over the last 15 years mishandling internal issues, I remain convinced the Universities and Colleges are woefully inadequate in terms of competing with those legal minds who are rewarded based on winning.

The potential idea that I have heard bounced around on TV lately is starting the season earlier so that the season ends early enough to have the Portal Open after the Season with enough time for the players to choose a new school and enroll for the Spring Semester. That would require starting the Season in early August.

They could just go back to 10 games- oh,wait- that might result in less money. The main problem is the ease of movement with no compensation for the school and no penalty for the athlete. That’s because there aren’t contracts. I’m not worried about lawsuits, since after all, a deal is a deal and both parties have to abide by it.

Or the NCAA could reinvent as a “Club”.

Country Clubs have rules. Either abide or you don’t get in.

IF you want to play sports for the club, you play by their rules or, once again……. go to truck driving school.

Absurd again

Of course this is all talk, but what else can WE do?

I’ve mentioned NASCAR a couple times. They were as “hot” as hot could be a few years ago. But, they changed the rules, and the way they operated. They tried to get “civilized” and eliminate “rubbing” (racing) and fighting etc. (I equate this to “targeting”, roughing the passer, the “slide” in the wussification of FB. Fans don’t like it. Add the portal and NIL and many fans like it less)

They tried to change things back when fans disappeared, but they are nothing like what they were.

Times, attitudes, and interests change.

I don’t care about NIL I think they should put a cap on it though. I hate the portal that will be the reason I quit watching college sports. I also wonder about the scholarship reduction they implemented. That means a lot of these athletes who would normally end up at the power conferences will end up at the lower tier schools.
