I have very impressed with Tyler Shough’s passing over this season. He’s one of the best pure passers ever at Louisville. His shortcoming and part of the reason this team has losses to SMU and Stanford is his inability to run the ball.

In this age of football you have to have a QB who provides some ability to run and keep the defense honest. Against Stanford, Louisville’s last drive was an empty backfield or a blocking back. Shough made it through his reads and couldn’t find anyone open. Stanford was dropping everyone back knowing Shough was no threat to run. Had he been able to get a first down or some additional yardage a field goal may have been in play.

Against SMU, Shough ran short of a key 1st down forcing a 4&1. This happened multiple times this season.

I realize the defense is the main issue but the offense can help prop up a bad defense. When the defense needed the offense most in the 4Q last Saturday they couldn’t get it done.
