I played at Louisville when Vince played at UK. He made the right choice at that time. We were still the 2nd best team in the state but it was a distant 2nd. Madison was a really good coach especially with pitchers. They were really good.

Louisville just didn’t have any resources back then which makes what McDonnell built even more impressive.

I went to WKU with Madison. My roommate from Louisville and him are cousins.
We spent nights at each other’s homes. A really good guy.

And speaking of “good enough” here’s a quick funny (to me anyway) story.

Keith and I were sitting in the Student Center when the WKU baseball coach, Pickens, walked through and saw Keith. Keith had reached out to him about a scholarship but Pickens “just didn’t have room”.

Anyway, he asked Keith what he was doing and he said he was enrolled at WKU. Pickens eyes lit up and he asked “are you coming out for baseball?” Keith said no and was asked why not.

He said “Well coach, when you couldn’t give me a scholarship I didn’t have a choice. I’ve signed with the Montreal Expos. I’m only here in the fall”.

I can still see the look on Pickens face.
