Coach McDonnell held a teleconference today to update the status of the draft, summer ball, and expectations for next season. Here are the highlights:
- Coach Mac is very excited about Reid Detmers possibly being a single digit pick. They keep hearing anywhere in the 5-10 range.
- Anticipates seniors Justin Lavey and Danny Oriente will sign a free agent deal if undrafted.
- Luke Smith will likely return to Louisville if he is not drafted in the first five rounds (the is huge for next season)
- Adam Elliott will be interesting, he could sign or come back. Time will tell.
- Next years draft will be crucial to Louisville due to the shortened draft this year. CDM says as many as 10 position players could be drafted next year.
- The staff is not interested in taking any position players from the transfer portal, but a few pitchers have been enticing. Very excited about the incoming class and developing current roster.
- Almost every returner will be playing summer ball.
- Once the state allows, Louisville will host a summer league and mentions that Metzinger and Wyatt Stevenson Could play in the league, among others. League will consist of players from colleges across the state.
- Possible weekend starters next year - Albanese, Kirian, Elliott, Perkins, Prosecky, Webster, Hawks, Kuehner, plus one incoming freshman, but he wouldn’t mention who. I’m guessing Ben Wiegman, but I’m not certain.
- CDM praised pitching coach Roger Williams for developing bullpen pitchers into starters.
- Louisville will host a scrimmage against WKU this fall the same weekend as the football game.
