I have to say I'm surprised and disappointed we haven't seen Clarkson this season. If he has star potential, one would think he could get some "Wildcard" formations or goaline opportunities for a RPO.

I think Brohm could use a run threat QB as a change up, giving the offense more options. Some zone reads on those short yardage plays.

But it seems to me he must not be the obvious next big thing or he would get some play packages I would think?

Who thinks Brohm will have another tall, dropback QB from the portal to start next season? Or will Clarkson get the chance?

At some point, Brohm is going to have to give chances to the current backups on the team. Sure you want them to earn their starting spots, but it just doesn’t make sense for him to continue to sit Clarkson, Adams and Allen for next season. they all know the system.

Current QB hasn’t justified less minutes. He’s actually pretty good.
It's not about being justified. It's about what helps the team win. In no way am I saying Shough should yield snaps because of his performance. The fact is though he's not fleet of foot and there's times when a RPO can come in handy.

It's more about Clarkson than Shough. He may not be a RPO type QB. He's rarely played so I don't know. I know he's not tall but I really don't have a clue what he does best at quarterbacking.

Which is surprising and disappointing which is what my post was about.

I don't think the team winning has anything to do with QB play. What I see is play calling and defensive scheme. We are starting the game in the hole every time because of preparation. Our team relies on "halftime adjustments". F that. Be prepared before the game starts and stop being so predictable.

Okay, let me try again. What I'm saying is how good is Clarkson? Fans have anticipated him being maybe the next Jordan Travis ever since his recruitment.

He was expected to see the field at some point if he is as good as advertised. Would Brohm keep someone like Travis on the bench but for only garbage time?

I'm not suggesting giving Clarkson a series or two during a close game. Shough is the man and is not the reason for any of the losses. However, down near the goal line a running QB can open things up and would help this team score TD's. Same with all these 4th and 1 we can't seem to convert.

Now if Clarkson isn't ready for that role or isn't much of a running threat I don't know because he rarely plays. If he isn't then sitting on the bench is the right call. My point is I'm disappointed that he apparently isn't good enough for that small role.

Did you watch the Ravens game yesterday? Ravens first drive. 4th and 1 on the goal line, Harbaugh decides to get cute, pulls Lamar off the field and only has Henry in the backfield. Direct snap and Henry loses 2 yards...

You don't think the minute Slough is not lined up at QB and another QB is that it's likely to be a run or QB sneak? What's the chance of a newly inserted QB who hasn't played since the 1st or 2nd game to mishandle or fumble the snap? I have seen it played out too many times. Brohm is still coaching like we have something to play for this year, not next. I tend to agree.

Maybe giving him a few shots on those 3rd/4th down and short failures could have been a good idea. Though, he'd have had to gotten the first downs by a large margin with the ACC refs doing the spotting.

What's the team red zone TD % ranking?

Look, I'm not advocating for Brohm to use Clarkson if the dude isn't ready for prime time. My entire point is I'm disappointed and surprised that Clarkson apparently isn't good enough now.

Good example is our last game. Defense comes out, forces three straight 3 and outs and our offense completely shts the bed and doesn't take advantage of the good defensive play. Next thing you instead of taking control of the game early, we found ourselves down 20-0..

I can see your point about Clarkson not being good enough to play and the disappointment. I’m not surprised however since he doesn’t fit Brohms prototype QB, and he wasn’t his recruit. I’m not going to pretend that I know how good he is but as we all know that HS player rankings especially QB is far from an exact science(H.Bailey was a 4star top 100). I think Clarkson was over ranked and will be transferring to a west coast college school closer to home or he will join Satt in cincy

Or lets just take the high road and assume that Jeff knows what he's doing especially when it comes to QB play. Slough is playing at a pretty high level at this point and I'm not sure I see a reason to take snaps away from him other than some gimmick or trick play. No HC wants a QB controversy, especially if one doesn't exist.

I think if he does play this year, it will be after the bye week against Stanford and maybe Pitt?

But you don't throw him into big games like we've been playing without good reps in practice. But if he was showing the potential, I do feel like we would have seen him more. I don't think Jeff is planning for a future where Pierce is the starter, but the option is open if he proves something.

This is absolutely insane. Shough is rated in the top 10 in the nation. Anyway Clarkson is not even the backup QB 😆
What is insane? You and others not understanding the point?

Never, not one time did I say anything about any QB controversy. I've said over and over my point is my disappointment with Clarkson, not Shough.

Let's say for example, Brohm had SMU's Jennings instead of Clarkson when this season began. Does anyone not believe Brohm would use Jennings in some form?

With the hype Clarkson came with, I'm disappointed and surprised he still has rarely played.

So, please, no more retorts about some QB controversy.

I concur with this opinion. I'm surprised he hasn't transferred already. Cincinnati may be his next school.

You’re right to be disappointed in Clarkson, but if he was the next coming of Redman, Brohm (either), Bridgewater, or Jackson, we would not have taken Shough as a transfer in the first place.

Well, don't think anyone ever believed Clarkson was ever at the level of Lamar, Teddy or the Brohm's. He wasn't a 5 star recruit.

I was hoping he would be like Jordan Travis, who it took awhile before he could really show his stuff. When Brohm was hired, the 6'0 QB was going to have to be out of this world to get the gig.

But there was a lot of hype on Clarkson and he didn't transfer, so I thought we may see him in some RPO packages to make the offense even more hard to defend.

But alas, it's apparent that he's not good enough which surprises me.

So in one thread you state no more retorts about QB controversy, but in the very next post, you state you're surprised that he hasn't transferred? You're trying to start controversy when there isn't any. Slough is our best option, plain and simple. Enjoy the players who are playing, not the ones who aren't. Just trust Brohm if it becomes a next man up situation that he makes the right decision, whoever that is.

There was a lot of hype behind Clarkson which wasn’t really reality. You just don’t know how good or bad recruits are until they play. He may be pretty good but it has yet to be seen because they have a legit QB. I think you will know by end of spring and if he transfers where he goes. That will give you a better idea of his own and others confidence in his talent level.

The QB out of Alabama from Satterfield that looked good on tape. Came to Louisville under Brohm immediately transferred to Kennesaw State and isn’t very good. Does Clarkson end up at Arizona St or Cal or Nevada/Unlv? Then how does he actually do?

Recruiting High School QB has a lot of variance.

I'm not trying to start anything but a discussion on the ability of Clarkson. I said from the beginning I was surprised and disappointed. Isnt every Cards fan?

I was prepared to see feedback about his possibility of helping the team, not a QB controversy. I said multiple times Shough is the man and has been terrific. I just wondered if a RPO option on goal line or short yardage situations could be helpful with Clarkson.

After several responses I agreed with someone who suggested he will likely transfer, but in no way is that something I would be glad to see. My issue with some of the responses was this notion I was calling for Clarkson to play over Shough or that it was disappointing that he wasn't. That was not the point of my post. The only retorts I had issue with was people saying this.

This is a message board and its purpose is for people to discuss the teams, players and coaches. There was no attempt to start a controversy. Simple reading comprehension proves that I was wondering why Clarkson seemingly isn't good enough to run a "wildcard" formation or a zone read when all we need is one lousy yard.

Something you have to agree has been a problem this season.

I guess if its that obvious to you or simple, Brohm has already considered it...

Glad Brohm is the coach and not you

I think people are interested in PC because of the Fly Ville thing and except for Johnson they aren’t exactly setting the world on fire (yet). Those guys are still young and can develop into good players, though Jamari Johnson was just emerging when he got hurt (sucks for him and us). I don’t know if Brian is the right guy to coach Clarkson, though. He seems like a different style QB/ more a Stefan LeFors type. I’ll be pull for those Cali guys to develop into their full potential.
