I thought we'd give Alabama a better run too, but the overreacting around here (typical of any message board) is excessive. While I can agree that Bobby's 2.0 teams have been characterized by penalties and that we have a few too many of his family members on the payroll, I seriously couldn't name 25 coaches I'd rather have.

As many Bobby supporters have rightfully noted, the man has won 8 or 9 games every year he's been here despite the reality that the last 4 years have been our only as a member of a Big Boy League. If you coach long enough, your teams will ebb and flow. Kirk Ferentz at Iowa is an obscure, but prime example. He won 10 or 11 games each year from 02-04, but then won 7,6,6 and 9 the next four years. Then he won 11 again in 2009, but didn't sniff that level of success again until winning 12 in 2015. And Kirk wasn't taking a program into a Power 5 conference for the first time. The point is this: Bobby is still very capable of getting it done here. If he wins 10 or 11 games this year or next, or even the year after, this stretch of mediocrity that began with the Houston game in late-2016 will be all but forgotten.

If you don't like the Kirk Ferentz example, we all know that Jim Harbaugh is 9-9 over his last 18. And what about ole' Chip Kelly losing his debut to Cincy at home? And while we are at it, how about Tommy Herman down in Texas? Freaking Texas has now been defeated by Maryland on opening day two straight years. Those guys make a lot more money than Petrino too. Jeff Brohm may very well be the next viable answer at Louisville, but that time is not now and really not even close to now. I think this team will surprise some people and win 8 or 9 games this year. Considering expectations and losing the best QB in school history, I think that would be a huge success. Let the cake bake.

Uh KR is your dislike of Petrino caused by events in the past OR is it based on your desire to bring Jeff Brohm in as our “new” head coach OR some of both. IN any case, his prior eventful “actions” were just that, in the past and apparently he has been forgiven by his family and whatever religion he practices. His football coaching record is very good and that really isn’t debatable. Jeff Brohm is a good up and coming coach and I hope he is a candidate once Bobby Petrino is no longer our coach so long as Jeff continues his good work elsewhere. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the hopes for Jeff’s return to UofL are very premature.

GO CARDS - BEAT EVERYBODY!!! God Bless America!!!

Considering his pay, Petrino is among the nation's most valuable coaches...

#9 - LINK
I think that's the point. The results compared to his pay don't add up. With the amount of money he is making, the results should be better. When I say results, I don't necessarily mean wins although winning 8 games a year isn't up to snuff either. I'm talking about all the stupid middle school penalties and the lack of basic execution. For the amount of money coach Petrino makes, I don't think it's too much to ask to put 11 players on the field for every play instead of 12 or 13. I don't think it's too much to ask from a multi-millionaire dollar payed coach to act like he is really pissed off after these infractions instead of shrugging his shoulders and giving the sheepish grin we now see after a game like this. Yeah sure he screams at people during the game. So? It's not working. We need the MEAN Bobby Petrino back again. I don't see him anymore. Wish I did.

When you have childish views, might as well respond in cartoons.

You and the blind Petrino lovers can make thread after thread trying to prop Petrino up.
His wall has crumbled.

Its been explained meticulously, and the play on the field demonstrates his failures.

Call it what you want. Until he srarts EARNING his 7 figure salary, he is going to have his
seat warmed.

Were not Scat fans who wait for basketball season by accepting medicore football.

They will win a good amount of games this year. I was just totally pissed Sunday....I just dont understand the penalties and lack of discipline on his teams lately.

Louisville will be fine this year....we will win enough games, give UK their annual drumming and pick up next year. Next year is when Petrino needs to light it up because that team should be freaking top notch.

Wish I did.
Cue, I'm not sure you understood the linked analysis... Petrino's results as presented in that analysis EXCEED what he's paid when viewed from a national perspective. Petrino makes a lotta money--so do a lotta P5 coaches.

If you can figure out a way to quantify the stuff you see that you don't like, the "stupid middle school penalties," etc., that's another way to do the analysis. I used the one measure that's hard to refute, win % against conference opponents. HOW you win and lose I would argue are style points...

For a long time, I felt that Petrino was certainly a top 10 coach. That feeling has subsided some but I still have confidence in his abilities. My bigger concern is in the staff surrounding him. I realize comparisons with Bama are slippery but take a minute and look at their staff (and credentials) and then look at ours. You can do the same for most other top 10-15 coaches and you see that they are surrounded by highly accomplished assistants. I don’t feel that same level of confidence with our roster of assistants. I think this may be the biggest indictment or blind-spot of Petrino.

LOL at comparing our staff to Bama's and drawing conclusions. Why not not compare ourselves to the Patriots?...

Lol, did your reading comprehension fail you after the big trip to Orlando. I noted that comparing to Bama is tough but that you could look at other top programs and find similar staff discrepancies.

I don't need to quantify it. It's just basic football. Just how hard is it to coordinate that the right 11 players take the field at the right time? That's a serious question BTW. I have never coached football so I really don't know the answer, but I would like to think any coach who understands how to count knows that only 11 belong on the field at any given time regardless if it's offense or defense. I don't think it's too much to ask that the players are prepared to play. That is on the coaches, and since coach Petrino is the head guy, the buck stops with him. He needs to fix it.

Well let me stop LOL-ing when you tell me the rest of your comparisons. I'm still googling the Patriots' staff... :p

Understood. I don't like style points against me either. But I expect to be judged by my bottom line, as does Petrino in all likelihood. We weren't winning that game with 15 guys on the field every play...

I want to make sure I understand your POV zipp. If I am right, you are pleased with (or at least accept as is) the coaching performance even after witnessing the correctable mistakes which point to a pure void of coaching in some fashion?

Is it the lack of coaching or just dumb players? If it's dumb players then who recruited them? Regardless, the buck stops with the head coach and that is Bobby Petrino. He either fixes the stupid mistakes or he needs to be replaced with a coach who will fix the stupid mistakes or recruit smarter players. Either way is fine with me. I'm a UofL fan first. I've never been coach fan first no matter the sport. It's all about UofL.

For the record, and before some of the more sensitive posters on here chime in, I am in no way calling our players dumb. It was just a question to zipp to help quantify my point.

Come on now Zipp. You need to step back and re-read what KH said.

He made/makes a very valid point about the asst coaches. Why do you want to conflate the point by mocking him with the Patriots comment I just don't understand.

KH was (IMO) making a rational and reasonable comment deserving a respectful serious answer. Be nice to a fellow Card Fan.

Pick any. Start with our conference mates Clemson and VaTech if you want to pare things down.
You said Top 10... That's other teams like Ohio State, Clemson, and Georgia.

And your coaching staff up and down the list doesn't match Alabama's or theirs. Duh...

My point is about fixation on details in a game where details didn't matter. If we had lost that game by a TD, let's talk about communications on the sideline between plays.

I'm not saying you're wrong wanting to see a tightly run ship. I'm saying you were in the water staring at an aircraft carrier...

Some folks don't understand who or what they are (or they just don't own it). Comparing your assistant coaches to Alabama's or Ohio State's is irrelevant.

And with too many posters in this space, it masks an agenda. I'm guessing, for example, that knuckles doesn't like so many of Petrino's family members on his coaching staff. Getting to the bottom of some of these remarks is more important than the remark itself...

You are such an insufferable curmudgeon that is suffering from comprehension problems. I said I used to think he was a top 10 coach for sure. I said you could look at other top 10-15 programs to look at their staffs for comparison.

Feel free to disagree with my point but to blatantly misrepresent what I said shows your bias.

Petrino can put his whole family on staff if it puts us in the best position to win. I see some blatant technique issues as well as coordination issues that may be attributable to the staff.

U of L's staff is inferior to the other schools mentioned (ex. Virginia Tech).

I have no bias except for facts. Do you have any other brilliant observations today?...

Who do u think we could get that would have as much success that Petrino has had, or is having? You, and all the other Petrino haters, have this inflated image of what our program could be based mostly on Petrino's past accomplishments at UofL. It's hysterical the selective history of our past that some of u guys possess. The fact that UofL even pays this type of money to our football coach can be directly connected to Petrino's past success. The guy has already earned his salary (orange bowl win and conf titles), is earning his salary (responsible for our only two college gameday experiences), and will earn it in the future. Sit back and enjoy.

Hall of Fame and the ONLY Coach to won a National Title at UofL, said you dont rest on your laurels.

He is regressing. If you cant see that, take off the rose colored glasses.

Did you not witness last season or is the first year youre a Cards fan.

There is a reason GA let go of a coach who won 10 games or more 3 straight years. It got them within 30 minutes of a National Title.

Thats what we expect from UofL football. To compete for Conference Title, which lead to the playoffs.

Got it. I never thought we had any chance of actually winning the game. I was just disappointed in how poorly the Cards executed which had nothing to do with Alabama. Had Alabama been the reason for those issues, I would have been fine with it. The Cardinals gave a ton of yardage freely to a team that was already better. That's why they scored 51. We helped and that was very disappointing.

U dismissed everything i said. Just answer one question, who do we go get that has the past success Petrino has had, or has that potential? Because if we go to a coach that just has potential, then we're gonna be in the same boat we are now if he doesnt beat the clemsons and alabamas of the world.

And to add, Petrino regressing is your opinion, and not fact. Bring facts to the conversation, it helps end the debate.

I don't think there is any comparison between UofL's defensive staff and VaTechs. Bud Foster and Tyrone Nix are considered some of the top coaches in the country in their roles. The other defensive coaches at VaTech have a lot of experience together which helps with continuity. I think you could argue that UofL's offensive staff is on par with VaTech, although losing Klenakis definitely was a blow to continuity and experience.

Appreciate your comments. It's all good. Zipp has it out for anyone who shows a modicum of patience and hope with Vince Tyra and Chris Mack. Its nice to see that there are others like you that also want the board to be a place of relevant football discussion.

I just post here enough to recognize how some people think (or don't). Amazing how consistent it is...

Who do we get to replace CBP? No one. We are a total piece of crap program with no top SEC assistants wanting to be HC's some day. Oh wait, CCS was that man, bring him back! He's not in a Power 5 at USF

Lol. The question is who could we get that's better than Bobby? As far as CCS, we had him, but he left. Even when he was here people were missing Bobby, and our fan base wasnt totally upset he left. if we hired ccs back it would be a down grade from Bobby. On the other hand, if we hired a young "top sec assistant" not only would it set our program back a few years, there is no guarantee that young coach would be worth a shit, total speculation. At least with Bobby we know he has the potential to win a acc title, a few things just need to fall into place, #1 being a consistent DC.

I think this is more the issue. I think CBP is still a top coach, but I too question the assistants.

I know the perception is that Petrino is hard to coach with but I’d still think that top assistants would like at the program stature, facilities and conference. Probably my biggest concern is that there is zero familiarity on the defensive staff. As far as I can tell Van Gorder has never crossed paths with his assistants. At all the other top programs I looked at there was at least one assistant that had a solid history with the coordinator. Basically these position coaches are also having to learn a new system for the 3rd straight year. That is a tough task to learn the system and then teach the system to the players. It’s reasobable to think that time used to teach the system has taken away from time teaching technique.

You make an excellent point. The argument that Bobby is hard to work for probably isn’t valid, because Nick Saban can be an outright jerk and he has top assistants.
