11/9/22 LOUISVILLE VS BELLARMINE GAME THREAD- 9PM ACC NETWORK

On a positive note they making a high percentage of their free throws 🤷🏼‍♂️

I have no earthly idea what they were thinking by no getting actual guards in the portal. If something happens to Ellis they have nothing behind them.

This year is going to be ugly. Here is what is going to happen every guard is going to go straight at Ellis force him to play defense which he doesn’t do well. They will dominate him or get him to foul.
What was KP supposed to do? If grad transfers said no, what can he do? You act like he turned down guards wanting to transfer here.

I think it's been established that the unknown penalties the program was to face is why no one transferred here.

I like Ellis’s game but he is not a clutch player. Our team has to realize there is 2 halves in every ballgame and they need to play hard in both halves.

Ellis also played all 40 minutes. Might have been just a little tired there right at the end.

And yes (for those who are ready to harp on the construction of the roster) I do realize that it’s Payne’s fault that Ellis has to play all 40 minutes….

This was my first chance seeing this team. First half was pretty atrocious. 2nd half was better especially the defense. Of course not great either.

Mike James play was good to see. I like his game. BHH showed some flashes and along with Wheeler is an active body in the paint. Curry was a no show. Ellis is pretty good but also so erratic.

I understand Ellis was tired but he looked really scared at the foul line and the last minute of the game.
Might be some of that “stink of losing” still hanging around from last year. It’s difficult to be confident that you’re going to make the plays to win the game when you’re coming off of a miserable 13-19 season.

The real issue is with Curry. Wtf is going on with him! I hope nothing serious, bc he was an absolute no show. He gets 10 and 6 , and Kamari hits some shots, and we win. However, we have glaring weaknesses, and have hardly any fluidity. I think they’re thinking too much, and making programmed passes, instead of making plays to score. Strange strange team. I hope we win some games and get better throughout the season, but this was not a good game. We came back in the second half, but had some serious scoring droughts and head scratching turnovers. Go Cards!

They have some pieces but it will be a long year. I can’t understand not throwing the ball in the post. Just don’t get it.
IMHO, it’s a timing thing … against a team that doubles aggressively, you’ve got to have good ball movement coordinated with the player posting up at just the right time.

We did a great job of it just a couple of times tonight. I also recall at least twice getting called for offensive fouls when the Bellarmine defender flopped when our post player made a move to the basket.

Always would prefer to improve while winning, but my goodness was that ever a massive improvement over the Chaminade game.
I’m with you on this. Huge improvement over the Chaminade game. If we can just keep improving each game, we have the chance to be a decent team. We have to remember the entire team is trying to learn and adapt to a new system and a new coaching philosophy. They aren’t playing naturally or with confidence yet. That will come with time and repetition.

I get the double teams but that is what you want. It just requires solid passing out of it. The defensive team is scrambling at that point. They fed the post what 5 times. That isn’t enough for this group.

Gotta find a way to get Fabio up to speed because we have nothing behind Ellis if he gets hurt or in serious foul trouble.

Fabio is not the answer this year. He needs to redshirt. It’s still very much up in the air if he can even be developed into a P5 level player at all let alone this year. Hercy is your better option for this year but this roster is just an abomination all around.

I'd just play Lands and James together at G to give Ellis rest. But there aren't a lot of answers here there's only about 8 guys that can play. It appears Kenny might have learned that lesson in the 2nd half he kept the walk on level dudes out of the game, tightened that rotation and got some better results. Syd was a no show they gotta straighten him out right now because this team is already in bad shape going into the season if he's AWOL it's gonna get even more frightening. This team is bad not sure there are any answers.

I’m starting to believe that if you wear the number 3 on a UL jersey to always have to have the ball in your hands, especially in the first half of games.
What up with Sydney? Pissed? Hurt? Disinterested? He’s doing little to make himself available in the post. In fact, most of our bigs treat the paint as if it were radioactive. No one seems to want to post up. I also noticed we were trying to get paint touches but too often it was El dribbling in far enough to tap the paint with his toe then hustle right back out.
Overall, I feel like it was an improvement over the exhibitions but still a long, long way to go.

If Fabio is truly that far off then he should red shirt this season. It's just that the Cards are desperate at PG when Ellis is out and he can't play 40 minutes every single game.

Plus CKP played Zan out there so I thought Fabio could get a look.

Being committed and locked in on the defensive end will prove to be critical for this team going forward as they “appear” to be somewhat limited offensively. Bellarmine’s half-court offense is/was hard to defend the way they move the ball and move w/o the ball.

Better defense in the 1st half Cards win last night.

The offense looked good at times when they moved the ball and got dribble penetration (less the times the guards over penetrated). They have to incorporate more low post touches to the bigs even if only to get the defense moving and collapsing… will open more things up.

Cannot say enough about James. He seems to have a lot of upside.

A concern going forward is that most teams (better teams) are going to attempt to shutdown and/or takeaway Ellis. He’s the head of the snake. Spark plug…. This is why the commitment to playing really good defense is going to be critical for this team and their limited offensive talent. James and Lands will need to come along quickly and be needed to take off some of the load in the backcourt/wing.

I mean I think Fabio is that far off. He had no real scholarship offers despite playing in Florida. He was going to reclass until we through him a lifeline. He’s on a team that probably has the worst guard situation in D1 and he’s seen almost no playing time.

You are probably right about Fabio not being ready yet. Do you know why Devin Ree didn't play? Is he not ready as well?

This game when you look at the final numbers was lost at the FT line. The Cards actually made 4 more 3 pointers than Bellarmine but shot 8 less FT's.

That's something we normally don't see at the Yum center when playing mid level non conference teams like Bellarmine. Cards had more rebounds, more blocked shots but Bellarmine shot more FT's.

This was the best performance by the Cards in their 3 games played but obviously it was not enough. I see improvement in each game and the rotation is starting to be revealed.

The Curry/Wheeler combo needs help getting the ball down on the block but I think both can be effective if and when they get more opportunities.

Mike James is going to be a top player by the end of the season. The trio of him and Withers and Lands give the Cards huge potential to be the difference in winning enough games to avoid a losing season. Lands need to start making some shots though.

Huntly Hatfield and Traynor provide solid depth but both need to continue to improve each

I mean Ree is a skinny kid barely ranked inside the top 100. Kids ranked in that area rarely make an impact at major programs their first year or two. Combine that with the fact that he’s not physically ready and you can understand why he doesn’t play. I would wager he’ll only play as a last resort this year and probably redshirt.

Bellarmine shot more free throws because they attack the basket more often and because we weren’t moving our feet on defense. Tough to draw fouls when you are just slinging the ball around 25ft from the basket

btw, ICYMI, we were down 10+ with just over 3 to go and we had the ball with an open shot, then a successful in the lane rebound, but regretfully a failed put back. if the put back goes in we're all talking about how bad they were but how resilient they were to come from 10 down with 3 to go and won, they didn't quit and they kept fighting. Alabama football sucks this year because they lost on a last second kick and a last second 2-point conversation. one simple play changes the narrative folks so don't stress, take joy in the fact they kept themselves in the game when they were getting beat. would not have happened last year, or the year before, or the year before

So we should be happy we only lost to Bellarmine by 1 point, I don’t get that.
i thought the original spread on the game was them favored by 8 not us, i wish i bet as i would have bet the house that a team who won their division last year playing in the same system would have a much better chance to win against a team without any identity, a new coach, new players, no system, no confidence, and no ffing chance of winning...and they almost did. i mean, who actually believed we were going to win, any of you? really? you really thought this team was somehow going to be any better than last years team with all the changes? let me put it another way, if this was last years team would we have beaten Bellarmine...NO, so why did anyone thing this year's team would? baffling to me... but the defintiion of being a fan(atic) is someone who doesn't think rationally or with any common sense. right in front of our eyes, we lost to a div ii school who's name no one can pronounce or remember a week ago and somehow we're goign to beat a well tuned team. com'n now.
