Just to help pass the time before the Sun Bowl kicks off, here's a quick quiz of 5 questions to test your memory/knowledge of UofL football history, "modern" history that is, since 1985. Perhaps this could provide a brief perspective of the job Jeff is doing thus far.
When the Sun Bowl ends on New Year's Eve, we will have finished our 40th season since the late Howard Schnellenberger took over the reins and put us on that historic trend that took us to where we are today - a Power 4 conference team that expects to have winning records & go to annual bowl games . Although we are still on that rollar coaster "Collision Course" trek with a natti, there's no question Schnelly's dreams and aspirations pushed our program to another level, having now reached a bowl game in 23 of those 40 seasons (57.5%) after only reaching a few in the history of our football program prior to 1985. We have had 8 different head coaches during those 40 years (with BP having 2 different stints in 2003-06 and 2014-18), not counting interims.
So, here's 5 quick questions regarding our past head coaches over the last 40 years. See how you can do strictly on memory/knowledge. And, please, don't cheat and look up the answers. No fun in that as it would be very easy to get 5 out of 5 googling.
1. Coach Brohm has taken us to bowl games in each of his first two seasons as head coach. What other UofL head coaches, since 1985, have achieved this feat?
2. What former head coach led us to the most number of bowls during his career here, and how many was that?
3. What former coaches led us to bowl games and winning records in every full season they coached here?
4. If the Cards win the Sun Bowl, Brohm will have won 70% of his games over his first two seasons. Who else won 70% or more of their games in their first two seasons at UofL since 1985? Who has a career win pct at 70% or better at UofL since 1985?
5. With a Sun Bowl win, there is a good chance the Cards will "finish" the season in the AP Top 25 for only the 12th time in school history (all since 1990), an outstanding feat for a non-blueblood school like Louisville. Which former coach had the highest % of his teams accomplish this feat of finishing the season ranked in the AP Top 25?
There you go, try to answer without looking it up. When you do see all the answers, hopefully you'll appreciate the job our current head coach is doing thus far. And if Pierce Clarkson goes into the portal, who knows who will QB in the Sun Bowl.
