Some thoughts on Louisville after calling the spring game:
- QB Tyler Shough has a live arm. They want to stretch the field and get more big plays in the vertical passing game. He can do that. Hasn’t finished a season healthy but if he does, this team has a chance. His 7th season of college football and turns 25 in September.
- They need a true No.1 WR to replace Jamari Thrash. Chris Bell has looked the part in the Spring, and caught two long TDs in the scrimmage. Alabama transfer Ja’Corey Brooks has been out this spring, but should provide another dynamic weapon for Shough.
- DE Ashton Gillotte should have another big year. Coaches say nobody has been able to block him one-on-one in practice. 11 sacks last year.
- Defense on the back end should be elite. CB Quincy Riley has 1st round potential. Won’t find many defensive backfields with more depth.
- Tough to replace RB Juwhar Jordan but the depth is there. It begins with Maurice Turner. Isaac Brown is a freshman to watch. Losing Peny Boone isn’t ideal but he had a cup of coffee and left. Plenty of guys to tote the rock.
- Offensive line has a lot of depth, with some key transfers. Asked Brohm what the strengths of the team were; two of the first things he mentioned were QB and O-Line. That’s a good sign. Need to keep Shough upright.
- The tight end position will be emphasized. There is depth there, but the best tight end is not on campus yet. Mark Redman should be a solid addition.
- A 10-win season will be tough to match in year two. But coaches feel the overall team is better. Will be important to mesh the newcomers and have the 2nd-year guys take another step. And of course, what happens in the portal. As DC Ron English said “You’re not really a team until you know who’s on your roster.”
Definitely a program to watch this Fall.
