Injury Report Before Virginia Game

The defense has been a bit of a disappointment
To me the defense has been a HUGE disappointment. Coming into the season everybody you talked to around the program was saying this could be the best overall Defense we've ever had, along with having good depth. I give them credit for the last 2 1/2 quarters at ND but other than that we've given up a lot of big plays.

Do you guys still Love Ricky P?

UK itself never disowned him like UofL did.
What does that even mean? I lived in Lexington in 2001-2004 when Rick took the job here and “disowned” doesn’t even come close to the insane vitriol that UK fans had towards him and Louisville. It was the only time I felt threatened there while wearing my UofL gear and after Pitino and the Cards walked into Rupp Arena in 2003 and upset UK, it was at a boiling point.

Just because he left Louisville and took a neutral job, softening the hate somewhat, doesn’t mean that those same people cheering him in blue yesterday, weren’t some of the worst people this side of WVU football fans. And by the way, UK fans never endured having him being extorted for banging a slut at a restaurant while getting ready to play a Sweet 16 game as the number 1 overall seed and didn’t have to watch him help take down the best Athletic Director in the country with all the crap that went down under his watch.

Louisville fans “disowning’ him? I guess some have (whatever that means) and the would have every right to do so.

Do you guys still Love Ricky P?

What a pathetic attention whore this guy is. There were definitely some fun years here with him at the helm but honestly, I’m so glad all the drama with this guy is gone. Also remember how he was Cal’s whipping boy and a control freak that constantly talked down to our fanbase.

Nothing wrong with him supporting his boy but drooling all over himself and talking about his beloved “Camelot” in the same place where he (and his family) were called every nasty thing in the book makes this Louisville fan wanna reach for a barf bag.

FOOTBALL *** Live Game Thread: Louisville at Virginia ***

Here is the game week press conference transcript:

Head Coach Jeff Brohm Press Conference
Louisville, Ky. | L&N Stadium
October 7, 2024

(Opening statement)
“We have to get back to work. We’re facing a good team in Virginia whose 4-1 and 2-0 in the
conference. They have good quarterback play and they’re solid on defense and balanced on
offense. Last year at home we had to score two late touchdowns to pull out a victory. They
controlled the game for the most part. We must get better as a team and improve on a lot of
things that haven’t gone our way. We need to go out there and get it done especially on the road,
which will be a good test for us.

(On his biggest priority right now)
“On defense we need to shore some things up and allow our players to play and execute and play
fast. There are some things that we’ve discussed, and we’re making corrections and make a
better plan to make sure those things happen. We have to make sure everyone is getting the call
so we can play fast. On offense, we have to continue to find ways to make big plays. When we’re
in some passing situations we have to find ways to protect better and be firmer so we can give
the quarterback some time. We have to be consistent playmakers and find ways to convert in
critical situations, third and short, fourth and short, and be smart in how we create a plan and find
ways to get it done.”

(UVA’s ability to finish in the fourth quarter)
“it’s all relative. We were able to finish on them last year, despite them playing a really good
game. This year they’re an experienced team whose quarterback is playing well, they settled on
him and he’s done a really good job. He can run and pass which gives them options and uses his
ability to escape the pocket, giving them opportunities to score. Their defense is solid and at
times they’ve played tremendously well. I think they’re a solid football team that’s gone through
a couple seasons where they’ve had some tough losses but have learned from them. They have
improved because of it and that’s how it works. They’re very competitive, they play hard and are
well coached. The quarterback play as well as their defense is their strength.”

(On what he wants improved on defensive communications)
“The simplest way to define it is that when the balls snapped, we need to be lined up and on the
same page about the call. If we get beat, let’s get beat because the other team outplayed us. That
has not taken place. There needs to be less checks, or in my opinion, zero checks, so when a call
is made, we can run it. Everyone needs to understand the play so certain things can’t detour us
from making the play. I do think that the calls need to get in quicker. We need a plan to make
sure that happens. Worst case scenario, if a team goes extremely fast and the calls not getting in,
we have a set play where we’re lined up to play until we get the call. There are some small things
with we’re going to make sure gets fixed and we’ll work hard this week to fix them, so our guys
can execute and play fast.”

(On getting behind early)
“It’s a combination of a lot of things but as a defense, we do need to communicate. Just like
when you’re playing defense in basketball, you have to talk. It’s going to be loud, so we have to

be better at communicating. I do think it’s a hodgepodge of things that happen here and there,
that need to be cleaned up to make sure we don’t put ourselves in those situations. We all need to
play better. We all need to coach better. It starts with me and goes all the way down. The plan
needs to be defined, and we need to know exactly what we’re going to do. We need to be able to
teach that plan and carry it out as efficiently as we can. To win at a high level, everyone has to do
their part or you’re not going to win. That means our assistant coaches, players, reserves, have to
step up and perform at an optimal level in order to win and we got to be better at that.”

(In helmet communication on the road)

“Well, we did have a couple of situations late in the game when it got loud. We still need to use
the signal system; we need to make sure that we are able to do both. We need to be aware of
when it does gets loud, do we change from one to the other, a little bit quicker then maybe we
did in the past game. That is all on the table and being discussed and trying to map out, ahead of
the game so when that does happen, we don’t miss a play here or two there because of
communication. So, the communication in all three segments have to be spot on, so that our
players can go play and execute, so as coaches we have to be really good at it.”

(On Ashton Gillotte’s numbers being limited)

“Well, there is a combination of a lot of things with that, I think Ashton has played hard, just
because he hasn’t got sacks, he’s gotten pushed, he’s gotten close to the quarter back, he’s gotten
in hurries, and he’s gotten in pressures, and he just hasn’t landed as much. So, it’s a combination
of a lot of things, we got to make sure we put him in the best position, we have to make sure the
people around him are in the spots they are supposed to be, we have to make sure that we’re
using his strengthens much as possible. We got to make sure we’re not only speed rushing but
bull rushing and using his strengthen to knock people back. We have to be aggressive in our calls
to make sure we overload their protection at times and not let them double team him. So, it’s a
combination of all that, I do think he has played hard and has been efficient, he been productive
for us, we just have to get him more assistant to help him dominate the way he knows he can.”

(On Isaac Brown’s usage)
“We are very conscious of that as well, I think Issac is a true freshman, so we have tried not to
throw to much at him at first, he has shown the capabilities, he plays hard, he doesn’t miss
practice, he has no fear. He makes catches, he make hard catches, he makes plays that normal
freshmen wouldn’t at time. So yes, he has been very productive for us, we need to make sure he
gets plenty of touches, we still need all the other running backs to perform well and do their job.
The more playmakers you have the better your team will be, but yes we are conscious that he is a
guy that need to get his touches.”

(On missed tackles and handling running QBs)
“We’re going to work hard on tackling this week. There’s a lot that goes into that. Getting lined
up, getting set, identifying what’s going on and having a couple seconds to digest and then go
execute. It’s also about taking the proper angles and using all of our body to see what we’re
tackling and wrap-up. As far as containing the quarterback, we’ve had a couple calls in blitz zero
and the quarterback has gotten out and ran for a big gain. With that said, everyone playing the call is most important. Secondly, be conscious on those situations to not be too aggressive and allow what could be a five-yard run, turn into 50 yards. We’ve had a couple times where in our blitz zero, a couple of guys have only picked up parts of the blitz instead of doing their job. That
means if we can’t execute the play well, we need to pull back. The quarterback running for big
gains is unacceptable and we need to be better at that.”

Injury Report Before Virginia Game

What's frustrating is even with these two losses, the Cards were right there to win if just a couple breaks went their way. It's not like we have been ran off the field or dominated.

We have definitely not played as well as I thought we would, but we haven't been hugely disappointing either. Shough is the QB we needed and not another Jack Plummer. The receivers including the TE's have been effective and Issac Brown is the next star RB here at Louisville.

The defense has been a bit of a disappointment, but at the same time has also showed the talent enough not to not be blown out. The defense has seen really good QB play starting with Jax State. Defensive adjustments have been successful during the games, but unfortunately the adjustments between games hasn't gone as well.

It's hard to believe that we're going to continue to lose close games like these last two. One would think the lucky breaks would balance out a little and Louisville doesn't have to kick a teams ass to win a football game?

Just look at this betting line against Virginia. How are we 7.5 favorites on the road against a 4 and 1 team who has a running threat QB? Louisville is still perceived as a very good team if unfortunate circumstances would ever get out of the way.
You sstill have time to get into this weeks PIC UM challeng. Please go for it. Good fotune to you.

Great reporting Earsky!

If you had to make some judgement on where this UL Baseball Team stands when compared to where the ACC Teams are, or at least where they have been in the last several years, how do we stack up?
I'd say we're looking at bouncing back. There are a lot of pieces in place, both in the field and with the starting pitchers.
They're going to fly under the radar coming in,probably be picked midpack ACC. There once again are ongoing battles for 3-4 spots on the field and probably 2 of the 4 starting pitching spots.

The bullpen will once again be a key,but I really expect it to be steadier.
We'll need certain guys expected to carry this team to have great seasons and then hopefully be hot at the right time.

I think Patrick is pitching today at 1,possibly going against Parker. Remember the name Peter Michael,a transfer from San Diego, who's in the mix for a starting gig.

I agree with this take. It's not totally crazy to think we could win out, on the other hand it's not totally crazy to think we could lose out either. Can't remember ever having this take on our football team. There's normally games you can point to as pretty sure wins or losses but I'm not seeing either on our schedule this year with the way we play.

I honestly have no idea where the Cards will finish. They could win out or not even become bowl eligible. I

Injury Report Before Virginia Game

Thank you Shadow; you are an excellent resource that I appreciate.

For those who want some explanation for the upset by SMU; aside from SMU’s superb performance and a horrible officiating call …….INJURIES, once again continue to hurt UL. These 3 injuries, in addition to losing Turner provides sufficient understanding for why we are not playing up to the expectations that we had preseason.

I know we heard all about depth, but it’s not covering some of the most critical positions like OT, DT, CB and RB.
Every team has injuries, some worse than others that's for sure, but the Cards injuries are NOT the reason for the two losses.

Just two horrible calls by the refs however was enough to lose two games, each by one score. Had the Cards not been robbed and won those two games, they would be undefeated and ranked in the top 10.

Injuries would still be there as would expectations that the Cards would still win. Every season we fans should expect players to get injured, but having the depth to overcome them is something we haven't seen a lot here at Louisville.

It's my opinion we do this season, but as we have seen this team still lacks good luck, fair officiating and smarter play calling.

But college football is whacked anyway these days. No one knows who's going to get upset each week. Vandy loses to Georgia State but beats #1 Alabama.

I honestly have no idea where the Cards will finish. They could win out or not even become bowl eligible. I think we can all agree though that if Shough gets injured, there's no depth there and the season would not be successful.

Do you guys still Love Ricky P?

Despite the amount of time that has passed, and having access to the actual facts related to the Minardi Hall scandal, there are still folks who continue to contend that Pitino was aware of the parties. I understand the hatred for the ensuing probation, but there was sufficient evidence that not only was Pitino unaware of what McGee was doing, there were several players (Luke Hancock, Steven Van Treese) who testified that they too were totally unaware of the parties. McGee was a sex addict using his position at UL to further indulge in prostitution with those he knew were inclined to participate along with him.

Was Pitino responsible for failing to monitor McGee? Absolutely, something he acknowledged responsibility for failing to do. As so many have responded with expressions of appreciation for the wins and the entertainment, I am one of those who enjoyed the UL-Pitino era.

Do I like Rick? No, and I am not the least bit surprised at his return to UK, and I find the term Camelot as nauseous. I hate UK, and all of the sanctimonious UK fans who practice idolatry in their support of a basketball program that has its roots deeply founded in racism, and cheating. The sooner the local media quit worshiping Pitino, the sooner we will not have to hear about him.

Do you guys still Love Ricky P?

He alone took down our program and ruined the career of Tom Jurich. Like I said before, he and Ky fans deserve each other. No slick Rick talk can ever make him welcome here ever again. He can choke on a King Kong Dong…
Let's place the blame where it truly belongs. Andre McGee took down the program, for something that is child's play compared to what programs like UK, Kansas and North Caroline routinely do.

I'm very conflicted tonight. I do support Rick Pitino but definitely hard seeing him in UK blue.

I'm 39 and I know this board trends older with mostly those in their 50s and 60s. Whether some of you all like it or not, no one in the fan base 45 and under remembers the glory days of Denny Crum. Being 39 I wasn't even born for the 1980 title or the 1983 team (that would've won the title if not for Houston most likely) and I was way too young to remember the 1986 title.

Whether some of you like it or not, the reality is no one 30 and under even remembers seeing Denny Crum coach UofL and no one 45 and under remember any type of glory years for Denny Crum. All we remember about Denny Crum was losing and being irrelevant. When I went to games late in the Denny Crum years as a kid, there were a few good memories, but it was mostly losing and sometimes getting run out of our own building. We were not relevant nationally.

What the older UofL fans needs to remember is that Rick Pitino was our Denny Crum. Under Denny Crum we were no longer an elite program. Rick Pitino made UofL relevant nationally. Rick Pitino didn't have to come to UofL, and let's be honest, in 2001 UofL needed Rick Pitino FAR FAR FAR more than Rick Pitino needed UofL.

Rick Pitino won UofL a National Championship. Screw the NCAA. I was there that night and nothing the NCAA says can take that away. Andre McGee was the one that screwed it up.

The way UofL (the university obviously, not the fans) treated Pitino and acted like his time here never happened, it was an insult to Pitino. And it was an insult to the younger fans who only remember Pitino. Honestly, while I hated what happened tonight, it was almost inevitable. If I was Pitino, I would basically disown UofL and do anything I could to trash the program. Pitino has taken more of a high road than I would've taken.

It hurts me to see Pitino back in UK Blue, for multiple reasons. Yes it feels like a betrayal. And yes it means most likely Pitino never steps foot in the KFC Yum Center again wearing UofL gear. It most likely destroys any chance of there being reconciliation between Pitino and UofL. But at the end of the day, it was going to happen.

Rick Pitino is in the rafters at UK. Is he at UofL? Enough said.

The actions by the UofL administration and board back in 2017 are the reasons tonight happened. When UofL fired him, ignored all the success he had brought to the program and all but disowned him (for actions not done by him), it was inevitable he would go back to UK. While the UK fans might have hated him (and I'm sure he hasn't forgotten it), UK itself never disowned him like UofL did.
