Nothing against Izzo, but he's won the tournament championship one time, and that was fifteen years ago. He often overachieves with the talent he has, which means Izzo is a really good coach.

But picking MSU to win as a dark horse makes no more sense than picking a few other teams. At least based on historical data...

It is one of those interesting love fest with the media. He is definately one of those coaches that gets a pass when things don't go well. He does have a good overall tournament record. Like you said he is a good coach and by all accounts he runs a clean program. A likeable coach that does it with less talent than most of the elite coaches makes him a good coach for the media. They have a good nucleus of players and if Anderson does get right they will give Virginia problems.

Tom Izzo is a really good coach, but I am not seeing a deep run from MSU in this tournament. You never really know though... A coach of his caliber could make something happen. We will see.

They are 13-5 in the last five years in the NCAAs.

Six years ago they went 5-1, so they are 18-6 in the last six years. I am a math man!

They lose in the first rd about once every five years which is reasonable.

They draw an SEC team nobody respects (though they could win) and then they catch UVA who isn't all that respected either due to the low scores of their games.

They got a little warm in the B 10 tournament and they have a team that is a little different than most years - they have shooters. They do have some experience.

This is a horrible tournament field so I cannot blame anyone that rides a program that has history of success.

At one point Izzo had six final four's in 12 years. They have slowed a little in the last four or five years. He did this with very few top 20 players.

Yeah, but they only go so far. It's like Izzo and his team overachieve each year, but they seldom rise to the level of greatness.

Reminiscent of other NCAA teams, they're simply spoilers for a couple teams in their path. And all I'm saying is that MSU seems to get more love than that justifies...

Was out running some errands and was listening to the Westwood One broadcast. I believe they said MSU had made the Sweet Sixteen 13 of the last 18 years. That in itself will make you (Izzo) and you're school (MSU) a media darling!
