We can never get the end game breaks

I've been watching Cards hoops for decades and there are two things we are most consistent at and that's last second possessions and loose balls.

We suck at it!

Even when we had championship teams we never seem to get the advantage when the ball is knocked about like in a pin ball machine. Be it long rebounds, deflected passes or blocked shots, at the end of a tight game we rarely get the break that leads to a the win. Take the Purdue game. Down one point just under two minutes to go Purdue takes a long 3 pt shot and the long rebound comes off at a weird angle, just over the arms of a Cards player into a Purdue player. They ran more clock and scored.

Tonight, Q has a open 3 that goes halfway down that would put us up two but it spins out a Seton Hall hits a long 3 pointer that was a far more difficult shot. Down 4.

And I know we have a handful of end of game shots with Jerry Smith and Edgar Sosa coming to mind, but way more of the time we don't even get a good shot off. At least Q tonight had a open shot to win it.

Right now this team has no real identity or offense. Its one on one and hope someone gets hot. VJ King was hot for a bit but after a lull he tried to force it again and his turnovers cost us dearly. Q hit a couple and suddenly he was taking most of the shots.

On defense they're good protecting the rim but they struggle to contain penetration. If we want to make the big dance we have to stop turning over the ball and stop taking so many bad shots.

Agree with a lot of this, this is supposed to be a good passing team. However, only 8 assists. Like you said, the guy who makes a shot just keeps on taking the shot until he doesn’t. Then the next guy tries to take over. That late shot by Snider was understandable because he just hit a shot but it was too early in the offense, basically two dribbles and a heave. The offense seems to move better with Perry but that was against inferior teams. I think CDP wants to go with Snider because of experience but Perry has better court awareness even though he’s a FR.

I agree with you both. 8 assists is pitiful and yet we were right there with the chance to win the game. If anything, knowing that SH has a senior heavy team, I should feel good about the potential, but I don't. Not with what I've seen thus far. There is no offensive rhythm to speak of. 8 assist in a game like this proves it.

I thought Perry did a little too much “driving without a cause”. He would drive into the lane without any idea what to do with the ball.

Individually they a good shooters but their other basketball skills are average to poor. Their ball handling and passing are poor which shows up in the turnover column. As a group it is a bad mix of skills. Deng and VJ are ideally a 3, but neither have the ball handling or passing skills to be a 2. Their game is basically identical they both are scorers. When your 2 and 3 are scorers the ball tends to stop moving. The bigs aren't skilled offensively in anyway, shooting, passing or post moves. Those realities means Q and Perry their hands full in getting people the ball in the right spots.
